Chapter Ten

Now that I know where I am going I feel more eager to keep walking. There must be another town or village on the other side of this forest that I was unaware of which I assume is where we are going. Hopefully when we get to Jasper's house we won't have to rush to leave unlike when we were at Anita's. I should be able to get a good night's sleep in a bed without having the worry that someone is going to turn me in.

Even though I am eager to get to Jasper's house, I also can't help the anxiety that is building up. Every time I hear the wind move a tree branch, or there is a flash of lightening, I imagine it to be the A Group or the palace guards waiting to force me back or torture me. Either way I don't want any of the groups to find me but it is hard to push those thoughts out of my head.

After another couple of hours, the sun slowly begins to rise. From what I can see through the gaps in between the tree branches, the sky is lit in magnificent colours. I see it go from a green to a blue colour with hints of dull red. It feels nice to finally have some sight back again after the pitch black night.

"We're not too far now, I was hoping we would be there sooner but the rebels slowed us down." Jasper tells me. I just nod at him and keep following.

Just like the morning in the other forest, a range of animals slowly begin to wake up. The forest becomes alive and suddenly I am less afraid every time there is a noise. Every now and then a rabbit scurries past us and each time one does I feel my jaw drop with amazement. It makes Jasper laugh every time.

"Have you never seen animals in the wild before?" he asks.

"Unlike some people, I don't spend all of my time in forests. I grew up in a palace remember." I jokingly tell him which makes him laugh.

"How could I forget that? Anyway, we are pretty much here." Jasper says but I don't see anything.

I stop in the place where I am stood and turn around on the spot to see if I have missed anything. Apparently not because all I can see are trees. "Are you sure because I don't see any houses here." I tell him.

"We have to walk through a couple more trees, come on." Jasper grabs my hand and leads me through the trees and then stops. "This is home." He tells me.

It is not what I was expecting. To begin with we are still in the middle of the forest, not in some village or a town like I thought I would be.

Next the house isn't even a house. It is more of a shack made out of wood with holes in the roof. The building looks like it could collapse at any minute. "You live here?" I ask Jasper hoping that he is joking with me.

"Oh how the other half live." He smiles at e and then walks to the shack, his house. "Honey I'm home." He shouts when he walks through the door and I follow on behind him.

The next thing I know another man walks out from another room and runs straight for Jasper. He doesn't even say hello to him before he embraces him and then kisses him. I don't know who this man is but it is sweet the way he is treating Jasper.

"Where have you been? Have you heard that the princess has gone...? Jasper, who is this?" he asks when they finally let go of each other and he sees me for the first time.

I don't know what to do or say so I sat quiet hoping that Jasper explains everything. "Take your wig off." He says to me and I feel hesitant at first. I don't know who this other person is or how they are going to react. This could be a very bad idea but then again Jasper trusts him so maybe I should as well.

The other man doesn't take his eyes off me as I reach up and take hold of the blonde hair on my head and pull it off. His eyes widen and I undo the clips that are holding my dark hair on the top of my head.

"You have got to be kidding me Jasper! Have you seriously kidnapped the princess and then brought her here. If we get caught we are certainly going to be killed." He yells at Jasper.

"Jasper never kidnapped me, he helped me. I probably would have been dead days ago if it wasn't for him." I tell him, feeling more like my princess self with my own hair down.

Jasper nods in my defence, "seriously Max, when I met her she was picking berries to eat without knowing what they were. It wouldn't have taken her long for her to pick a poisonous one."

"I can't say I care. There is a national man hunt for her. The queen is offering a huge reward if someone hands her in so the whole country have got their eyes peeled looking for her. A blonde wig isn't going to stop that." The man, Max, says. "The queen has also said that anyone who has any information and doesn't come forward will be arrested and then probably executed because that is the way the country is run. You know that as well as I do." He carries on saying.

Jasper pulls himself further away from Max, "the blonde wig did fool you, you had no idea who she was until Ria pulled it off. I understand all of that but I also know she needs help and a better life. Surely you can understand that?"

"We're calling her Ria now are we? How pally did the two of you get? And I can only imagine how awful living in a palace must be. Was there not enough servants doing your bidding so you thought you would runaway?" Max patronisingly says to me.

"What has gotten into you? I thought you would be alright with this." Jasper yells.

Max shakes his head, "how can I be alright with this? She knows who we are now. What if she hands us in?"

"I already told her about us. You don't have to worry about that." Jasper tries to reassure him but it doesn't seem to work.

"I'm telling you Jasper, this is a bad idea. I can't see this ending well."

"Please, I promise you that I won't report you to the palace. That would mean I would have to go back there which isn't something I am planning on doing so trust me, you're safe. All I want is some help and Jasper has been kind enough to do that. Please may I stay for tonight and I'll leave tomorrow and you can both get back to the lives you had previously. I only ever seem to cause trouble when Jasper introduces me to new people." I say to Max.

The three of us all just stare at one another, unsure of what to say next. It is Max who speaks up first, "you can stay for the night but then that's it. You're out first thing in the morning, understood?" I nod and thank him for this. He could have just kicked me out now.

"Max, there's no need to be like that. Can we talk in private?" Max agrees to talk to Jasper and I am left alone in their house. I decide to have a look around even though I know it's rude.

The first room I venture in seems to be a living room although it is not like your normal living rooms. There is one battered couch against the back wall and then a table with two plastic cups sitting on top. In the corner there is a pile of dry wood stacked so high and then not far from that are ashes on the floor. This is their version of a fireplace. A lump begins to grow in my throat because I never knew there were people still living in conditions like these.

There is no mantelpiece where they would have photos of themselves or loved ones. There is no television anywhere in the room like in ordinary homes.

The next room looks to be a bedroom as in the middle of the room there is an old, tattered mattress with two pillows on top and a thin blanket. It wasn't much of a bed. In the corner of this room there is a pile of clothes which must be the only clothes they own because there doesn't seem to be a wardrobe anywhere. This is nothing like my room at home.

I leave the bedroom and wonder into the bathroom which is hardly a bathroom. There is one toilet, god knows how it functions in the middle of a forest, and then a small tub which they must use to wash themselves with. The only other room is the one where Jasper and Max are talking which I assume is the kitchen.

"Having fun?" I turn around and Max is stood right behind me.

"Sorry, I know I shouldn't pry." I tell him and he nods at me.

"Yes you really shouldn't but I am also sorry. Jasper says I should trust so you can stay as long as you want and the two of us will help you." He says to me though his voice doesn't suggest that he wants to help.

I smile at him to show him that I appreciate everything. "Thank you, that means so much. Now I just need some sort of plan. I have no idea what I am actually going to do or where I'm going to go." I say to him but he doesn't seem to care.

"I'm sure we'll think of something." Max replies in a dry tone and then he walks away into the living room. I follow him because there isn't anywhere else to go.

Jasper walks over to me with a cup in his hand, "I made you some tea." I take the cup from his hand and thank him.

I take a sip and although it tastes of nothing it warms me up. I didn't realise how cold I was.

"So how do you like my home?" Jasper asks me while I'm sitting down.

"It's... err lovely." I reply to him which makes him laugh.

"We know it's nothing but it is better than sleeping on the forest floor."

"How come you have to live out here? I know my grandfather made it illegal for you to be... to be..."

"- gay." Jasper finishes the sentence with a smirk on his face.

"Yes, exactly, to be gay. But wouldn't there be a way to hide your relationship? Couldn't you then live with your parents?" I ask but then immediately regret it.

"Why should we have to hide it though? Why can't I tell the world that I am in love with Max Brown just like any straight person can tell the world that they love their partner? There is no reason which is why I wanted to tell the people I love about us.

I always knew that the world would react badly but not my family. So much for unconditional love." Japer tells me.

I sit up straighter, eager to hear more of Jasper tale so I can learn more about what life is really like for people. "What happened next?"

"Well I told my parents first and they thought I was joking with them. They didn't believe me but then when I told them I was dating Max, well they got really angry. They wouldn't stop to listen to what I had to say. They kicked me out so I moved into Anita's. I was never really that close with her but I was always thankful that she looked after me.

A few months after I moved in with her, rumours started spreading that I was gay but I denied them all. It didn't stop people from avoiding my aunts business and eventually she had to close down because no one went to her salon anymore. All because of me.

Max and I used to meet up in secret in the forest where I first found you but then when business started getting bad for Anita, I told her I would move out. She never put up a fight. We found this shack and knew we could make it work for us. There was never going to be a way for us to buy a house together so this really was the best option. And now we are here."

I can't even begin to imagine how Jasper must have felt during this time, how alone he must have been and it is all because of my grandfather. At least he has always had Max by his side.

"I'm sorry for asking. I can't believe you went through all of that." I tell him feeling shocked.

Jasper gives me a sad smile. "It hasn't been the easiest of rides that is for certain. But life is getting better now. Now drink your tea princess." Jasper tell me and I oblige.

"Am I alright to have a wash? I feel like I'm wearing half of the forest." I ask and both of them nod their heads.

I fill the tub with water and get in it when it is full. The water is freezing cold because there is only cold water but it is enough for me to scrub myself clean. When I get out I have no choice but to wear the same clothes again as they are the only clothes I have with me. I feel so much better than before.

When I leave the bathroom, I find Jasper and Max are in the kitchen.

"Right then princess, we need a plan. I have food and a brain so I'm sure we'll think of something. Now sit down." Jasper says to me and I can't help but laugh at him.

"Let's start planning then." I say back and we begin to brainstorm ideas.

So it's #RoyalWednesday, how is everyone feeling today?

I wanted to share a song that I wrote over a year ago with you guys called Kingdom, it kind of fits with this story.

Let me know what you think.

What are you thoughts on this chapter? How are you feeling towards Max? Let me know.

Who do you think would be a better leader, Queen Arabella or Donald Trump?

How many chapters do you think this book should be? 30? 40? More? I want to know what you think!
