Chapter Twenty Four
Lyra was running. She ran with an intensity. The creature had chase her many a night. It chased her now. It was a large dog, gray colored. The dog barked, baring it's teeth and snapping at her. And then the dog spoke. "You could've saved him." A blend of voices came from the dog.
"Don't forget your teachings, Lyra."
"It would be boring without you here."
"Could you do it? As a friend?"
"She's my cousin. She's all I got."
"You're not the bad at the violin."
"I don't have a lot of time left."
"Shh...shhh...Es is here, Es is here."
"The world is cruel, but I don't have to be."
"Love you, Lyra. Don't forget me."
Lyra fell to her knees, tears falling out of her eyes. "I'm sorry, Es. I'm sorry Barley."
I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I'm sorry...
Lyra gasped, her eyes flying open. She was breathing hard, her chest heaving, and an ache lay in her heart. Lyra felt cotton sheets over her. She heard a faint beeping sound, and she was a little numb. Lyra looked upwards, and a heart monitor was there. Only the Capitol had this kind of medical attention. Where was she? The room around her was small, with only a door, slightly ajar, leading outside.
Lyra sat up, and felt a pain in her ribs. She looked down, and saw her stomach was wrapped. Lyra turned, and saw her arm was in a sling. There was an odd, metallic taste in her mouth.
Lyra turned, her feet touching the ground. One of her feet was in a cast, but it seemed solid on the ground. She stood, limping a bit, with pain shooting up her leg. Lyra was wearing a long hospital dress, and her black hair had been put in a braid. Odd.
Lyra limped towards the door, to a small hallway. She heard talking in another room. Lyra turned towards it, seeing the door opened a small bit. About three people were talking. A woman, and two men. The woman had long blonde hair, which was put in a quick ponytail. She had sharp green eyes, reminding Lyra of Fox's, and on her cheek, a faint scar said "Freedom." Lyra shivered a bit, for she looked tough.
Next to her were two similar looking men. They had dusty brown hair, and matching blue eyes. The difference was one had laugh lines around his eyes, and the other had fearsome scars on his face. Lyra guessed they were brothers.
Lyra saw the woman recognize her, and she began to back away. The woman stood, going to the door. Lyra backed up, shaking her head. "Stay back...don't touch me." The woman held out her arms in surrender.
"We won't hurt you, Lyra Grey. I'm a friend. You're with the Rebellion now. You're safe." Lyra didn't relax, and the woman came forward, her eyes softening. "You shouldn't be out of bed. You're still injured pretty badly from the bomb." "Where's Fox?" Lyra asked slowly. "She's fine. She's in the other room, getting her foot set back into place. She knows you. I promise, I'll allow myself to explain everything. But for now, you need sleep."
The woman led Lyra to her bed, slowly pushing her back into the mattress. "Stay now." She pulled out a needle. Lyra shrank back in fear, but before she could move, the woman stuck the needle into her arm. Lyra's mind began clouding, while the woman checked her monitor.
The only thing Lyra could sloppily spit out? "What's y-your name?" She began to already fall back into the pillow. The woman locked eyes with Lyra.
"Lilia Brooks, niece of the Queen, leader of the Rebellion." Lyra barely had time to register it before her eyes closed and she settled into a dreamless sleep.
