Chapter Thirty Three
"Why did we get stuck with this job?" Lyra grumbled, pulling up another rucksack, and tossing it to Caspar. "I don't know." He said. "But I'm willing to honorably serve my general." Lyra climbed onto the surface of the helicarrier, where the group would fly to the queen's castle.
"Caspar," Lyra sighed. "We are packing weapons. That does not remotely serve anybody honorably. Caspar tilted his head. "Aren't you the fun one. Hold this, please." He held out a rope, and she held the rope in place as he tied a bundle of axes.
Honestly, Lyra couldn't believe she was going on this crazy mission. Either Lydia Brooks was idiotic, insane, or both. Lyra was lost in her thoughts, when she heard Caspar grunt. "You can move your hands now." "Oh. Sorry."
Caspar scratched his chin. "Could you get another dagger." "Yeah." Lyra dropped down from the helicarrier. Not being strong or skilled in knots, Lyra had been given the job by Caspar to take the long walk back and forth from the weaponry room to the helicarrier. This proved quite an annoyance, but Lyra needed to be on Brooks's good side, or be given an even worse job.
Lyra searched through the armory, pushing aside a large drum. She did a double take, and was reminded of Victor. From the grief Fox was feeling, she must've really loved Victor, and obviously his feelings were returned, until the death of Dawna.
Lyra hadn't been exactly close with Victor, or been there long. He was very nice, and Lyra did like him as a friend. She would admit she found him attractive, but never thought of him romantically. Though she found it strange that Victor never mentioned Fox or even Dawna when talking about his family. He must've wanted to protect Fox. There were cameras on the aircraft.
Lyra shook herself out of her thoughts, and picked up a blade. She nearly felt shocked at seeing the state of herself in the reflection of the blade. Her face was scratched up from the explosion, and her black hair was askew and hanging in her face.
"Lyra?" Called Caspar. "You alright?" "Yes!" She yelled back, putting the dagger in a sheath and running back to the helicarrier.
"Sorry Caspar." She muttered, handing him the dagger. "It's alright." He said, tossing the dagger to a pile of knives. Lyra studied Caspar. "Caspar?" "Hm?" He asked. "Why did you join the rebellion?" Caspar grimaced. "Bit of a long story." "We've got time."
Caspar bit his lip. "I wanted a safer world for my family. I dared utter a negative word against the king to a soldier. And-" he grunted. "I found my wife and son dead." Lyra gasped. "Caspar, I...I'm so sorry. Someone like you should never have to go through that." Caspar didn't look at Lyra. "I talked to my aunt, and now..now I'm here."
Lyra watched as Caspar sharpened a knife, and hesitantly put a comforting hand on his shoulder. He turned, and gave Lyra a sad smile. Lyra then realized why she would fight. The king ruined lives. And she would make sure he didn't ruin anymore.
