Chapter Thirty One
Lyra had already known that she was in for a large amount of trouble when she went to the cafeteria, and when the intercom came on. Everybody during lunch was allowed cheese, bread, ham, an apple, and a glass of water. Recently, rations were starting to get low. Lyra heard rumor that they were going to limit the food amounts to two meals a day, but Caspar had assured her the last time it happened was that they were under lockdown.
He also told of a famous story around the place. One of their main bases in the Southern divisions was attacked, and they lost all of their weapons. Lilia Brooks was at the battle, and instead of surrendering, she had went into the food storage. She and the few warriors that they had left had driven off the small amount of soldiers by throwing apples, watermelons, oranges, and more. They were welcomed back as heroes back home, and Lilia hadn't lived down the quite embarrassing odds. Especially whenever people would walk past, they would scream, "Death by ham!"
Lyra sat next to him at lunch. He had taken to be her friend, and she had gladly accepted. Fox didn't talk to her, or much of anyone that much. Lyra let her be, knowing Fox wouldn't appreciate sympathy.
Lyra nibbled on her bread. "Did Lilia evaluate you too?" Caspar nodded, drinking some water. "Aye. General Brooks isn't subtle with planning, but she's a clever woman. She'll choose whoever she feels is right for whatever she's planning."
"Should I be worried?" "Well, if you just got here, I would say she never sends out a new recruit-" The intercom crackled, and a loud sound rang out, making people cringe. There was a sound of a dropped microphone, soft swearing, and then Lilia's voice rang out.
"Council meeting will be commenced. Jay, Caspar, Sadie, Chris, Lyra, Raina, Wes, and Ruben, report as well. Do not be late. Thank you." A sound like a microphone being moved again rang, and then the intercom crackled and stopped.
Lyra leaned her head on the table, and groaned. "Of course." Caspar nudged her. "Come on. Don't want the general to be waiting."
Caspar directed Lyra to the council room. A group of about twelve people sat in chairs around a circular room. Lyra saw Fox sitting next to Lilia Brooks. She gave Lyra a scowl. She assumed that meant hello.
Lyra sat next to Caspar, and Lilia banged her fist on the table for attention. "Thank you all for coming. As you know, most of you have been evaluated. I shall provide an explanation."
Everyone listened, and Lilia took a deep breath before speaking. "I have a plan for sparking a revolution. But it's going to need a team."
"I have received information that's quite valuable. The location of the castle where the king's wife, my aunt, and the king's son, my cousin, are located. We gained this from Jay, a servant for the two of them." The same girl Lyra saw in the training room yesterday nodded. Yesterday she had seemed tough, but now she was timid, her eyes on the table and her brown hair hanging in her face.
"Jay is no longer a servant. As she was escaping, a soldier cut off her foot. This is why we need a rebellion." Lyra's eyes flicked to under the table, and saw a metal, hook like peg. Lyra couldn't help but wonder how she got around.
"The plan is to break into the castle from the underground railways that the king used to visit them. We are going to get in, and capture them. I know how the king thinks. He will send millions of soldiers are way, keeping himself unprotected. Then, we will break in, and I'll kill him myself."
There was a silence around the room.
"We have a problem though," Lilia Brooks continued. "We don't have the password, neither the escort to get into the castle where my aunt and cousin are. Jay, speak."
Jay stood up, a metal thunk coming from her foot. She pulled out a map, spreading it out on the table. The map contained the castle, and on the inside, it looked like a giant machine.
Jay tapped under the castle.
"We will be coming in through this area. The castle is arranged like a clockwork. Lava, arrows, swords. All of it a way to kill intruders. Also, the place will be crawling with soldiers. I know a way to get through the traps. It'll be difficult, but we can make it.
Jay sat down, and Lilia nodded. "That's why I arranged our group. For a way in." Lyra paled. She didn't want to go in there. Her throat hurt, but she didn't say anything or protest. She was confused why she didn't. Maybe Lyra wanted revenge as much as the rest of them.
Lilia pointed to Jay. "Jay. Trap and layout expert." Next she pointed to a girl with honey colored hair, and dark skin. "Sadie. Stealth expert." Next Caspar. "Caspar. Weapons and battle expert." Next a boy with blue eyes and red hair. "Chris. Trap disabling and war player expert." "Lyra, war playing and healing expert." Lyra swallowed nervously. After, a girl with black hair, and one blue eye and one brown eye. "Raina. Blind in one eye, but is a great acrobat." Finally, she pointed towards two men, who seemed to be twins. Both had dusty brown hair, and matching blue eyes. "Wes and Ruben, the twins. One good with healing, the other good with battle. We have our team."
Lilia Brooks stood. "For our country and freedom."
