Chapter Seven

Lyra was shoving things into her bag, taking as many things she could carry.
Lyra grabbed at least a week's worth of clothes. She also took some gold trinkets and clockwork laying around her room, to possibly sell while she was on the road.

Personally, Lyra would rather beg then kill for sport in the king's army.

Now, a bigger question formed in her mind. What about food?

Lyra swung her bag over her shoulder, and bit her lip. Perhaps she could search for the kitchens. It was the wee hours in the morning, and the guards should at least be a little out of it. She would grab some food from the kitchen, and, if she was lucky, she'd get out of the Palace without stirring too much trouble.

Lyra put on a black skirt with a bunch of pockets, and a brown, long sleeved shirt. She put her black hair up in a bun, and had packed a white shawl and a bunch of anklets and rings to blend in with the people of the Capitol City. Her violin was tucked deep in her bag, and was smeared in purple paint to hide it.

Lyra slowly walked out of her room, listening for guards. Silence. She tiptoed quickly down the halls, not trying to make any noise. Lyra looked around the corridors for the kitchens, listening for guards at the same time. She finally came across a single doorway.

Titling her head, Lyra slowly opened it. A bunch of things fell down on top of her, and she quickly shoved her hand in her mouth to stifle her scream. Lyra took a deep breath, and looked around. She was on the floor, surrounded by bread, cheese, and some crackers. She smiled. A food cupboard! It wasn't the kitchen, but it would certainly do.

Lyra soon filled her bag to the top with food, and shoved the rest back into the cupboard. She mentally patted herself on the back, and then turned to leave, when she bumped directly into someone.

"Victor!" Lyra jumped back in surprise. Victor was in some night clothes, and looked at Lyra in astonishment. "Lyra, what're you doing out here so late?" Lyra's face flushed.

"I was-uh-couldn't sleep, so I, uh, decided to take a walk!" She said quickly. Victor didn't look convinced. "What's in the bag?" Lyra wrung her hands. "Uh...this ole thing? Nah, just a gift my...neighbor! Gave to me, and I don't like going around without it. It reminds me of, well, home."

Victor stared at her. "Lyra...are you running away?" Lyra shook her head quickly. "Of course not! The king told me to stay, and the king's word is law! You should know that." Victor looked taken aback. Hopefully, fear of the king might give her a chance.

"I wasn't saying that at all! I don't know what your doing, but if your running away.." Victor suddenly softened. "It won't be as fun without you."

Lyra felt her stomach drop. "I will-okay. But I assure you, I'm not r-running away." Victor smiled. "That's good." He turned and strode away.

Lyra felt herself grow hot. But she didn't want to join the army. Victor would just have to face the music, no pun intended. Meanwhile, Lyra would be headed off on the nearest air ship as far away as possible.

Lyra put on her shawl and snuck out the door to the castle, carefully avoiding the guards. In a way, I am completely going against the king's orders, and the minute I walked out the door, I will be a wanted criminal, she mused to herself.

It's a revolution, I suppose.
