Chapter 28

By the time she arrived at camp, the moon was only halfway through the sky.

Emberstone, who was supposed to be guarding the camp, was instead curled up and asleep soundly next to the thick brambles. She was surprised her loud paws crunching through snow didn't wake him up.

She rolled her eyes and continued on her way to fresh kill pile.

Rosepaw dropped the black birds onto the pile and went back to the apprentice den, waiting for the darkened night to fade into bright oranges and reds of a rising sun.

She started to doze off, but woke up with a start as Shadepaw's leg hit her face.

"Do you mind?" Rosepaw said, annoyed.

Shadepaw squinted her eyes and shook her head. "Mmmmm... nope"

The ginger sighed and stood up. She padded out and felt a cold morning breeze hit her face.
Shadepaw padded behind her and went over to the fresh-kill pile. "I still can't believe you guys eat this stuff." She said, her stomach growling. "Even the sound of it sounds disgusting."

Rosepaw nudged her slightly. "It looks pretty good though, doesn't it?"

"No way."

"I think your lying."

"Am not!"

"Really? I think you would be up all night, thinking of a nice and juicy mouse-"

"Alright!" Shadepaw yelled. "I give up!"

Rosepaw smirked and grabbed the biggest mouse she could find that wasn't buried under snow. The two sat down and Rosepaw pushed it over to her first.

"You have the first bite. It's your first, after all."

Shadepaw looked down at the mouse uncertainly. She lowered her head and took the smallest nibble.

"Well?"

She stopped for a minute, but then basically face planted into the mouse and started eating it inside out.

Rosepaw couldn't help but chuckle. "So much for sharing a mouse."

"Oops, sorry..." Shadepaw said, and pushed what was left of the mouse over to her.

"No, it's fine. I'll just get a s-"

"Jayflight!" Berrysplash shrieked.

The two apprentices along with every other warrior in camp turned to look at Jayflight.

He perked his ears up in alarm. "Wait wha-" He stopped mid-sentence and his eyes glazed over.

At his paws was one of the things Rosepaw caught, except it had large bites out of it.

"Get those bats out of there, now!" Berrysplash commanded, and everyone dragged the featherless birds out.

So that's what they were-bats!

But why was Berrysplash reacting this way too them?

Jayflight suddenly collapsed onto the snow and started twitching.

"Brightflower! Go get some yarrow!"

The tan warrior raced to the medicine cat den, as Jayflight slowly stopped twitching, stopped breathing...

"H-He's gone..." Berrysplash sputtered. "Poisoned by a bat..."

Brightflower raced back out with the leaves, but her ears and tail dropped when she saw it was too late.

Rosepaw stood horrified. These things she had caught, meant for the good of the clan, turned out to be poisoned, and she was responsible.

She only had one thought running through her mind;

I killed Jayflight.
