Avengers Tower was a fascinating marvel to look at. Almost as tall as the Empire State and state of the art. I suppose that's to be expected when it's owned by the famous---or shall I say infamous---genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.
"There's the Russisn Gang plus one!" The supposedly egotistical bastard said. "So this is the new kid?"
"Kid?" I asked as I turned to Clint. He shrugged.
"You'll get used to him," he whispered. "Welcome to-"
"Welcome to Avenger's Tower or shall I call it Stark Tower since I'm the one who pays for everything outside of SHIELD," he said as he put a hand on my shoulder.
I gritted my teeth and took a step back. He shot me a weird look but otherwise kept on talking about himself or something. I wasn't exactly paying attention.
In all honesty, I was expecting him to be.....taller. All he wore was a AC/DC shirt invest some faded jeans. In his hand he held a glass of scotch (a bit to early for a liquid lunch if you ask me) and a phone in his other hand.
"Hey!"
"Sorry," I grumbled. "It's nice to meet you, I suppose."
"You suppose?!" He asked as if I had offended his ancestors cat or something. "I am hurt. You should be happy to see me. Every newbie may wanna learn a thing or two about----"
"But I don't know you, Mr. Stark--"
This man was exasperating and loud.
"Don't say Mr. Stark. You make me sound old."
"Aren't you in your mid thirties or something?" I asked. "Technically you're old in my book, Mr. Stark."
"I don't like your attitude," he sniffed.
"I don't like you," I fired out without thinking.
Bad idea.
"You have a big mouth."
"You have a big ego."
Shit. Why did I say that?!
"Someone had their bitchflakes this morning? Tell me, do you naturally wake up on the wrong side of the bed or is your hair just like that?"
"Sorry. At least I don't wake up with a hangover everyday. The AA group called, they lost a frat boy."
"Oh....," Clint said.
"Shit.....," Nat finished.
"I like her," Steve said as he watched her get under Tony's skin.
"Oh, you really wanna watch where you're going with that, kid." Tony stark stepped up to me looking me dead in the eye. He wore a sarcastic smile but I could see that in his eyes, he didn't like me very much. I decided that it was best if I didn't underestimate Tony Stark.
"Maybe I won't, Mr. Stark."
The corner of his lips curled up just a bit more and I could hear what he was going to say before it even left his lips.
"At least I'm actually part of the Avengers," he said with a smug look on his face.
"I think that's enough," Steve tried to intervene only to have Bucky and Natasha to stop him from making the matter worse. They knew that Stark can say some pretty mean things when he was on Defense.
"What does that have anything to do with any of this, Mr. Stark?" I asked, irritation creeping into my voice. "You're earths mightiest heroes, not a football team."
"At least I wasn't put on the team to babysit anybody," he finally said. "So Fury just found you on the streets and decided to let you join the Avengers or is he letting newbies onto the team? He's definitely off his game if he chose you."
The room went real quiet real fast.
How did he know that? I didn't tell anybody that and I swear Fury didn't either. He told me himself that this was a hushed matter.
Steve, Bucky and Natasha were waiting for what I had to say. Barton was waiting for me to throw the first punch.
Tony Stark looked down at me with some sort of victory in his eyes, as if he knew something that I didn't. That was most likely probably giving his reputation. Whatever he knew about me, it didn't come from Fury.
All the more reason to not trust the man in the suit.
"You don't know me. I don't know you. I know what you're capable of. You don't know what I'm capable of. I've been assigned here for some reason by the jolly pirate himself so, Mr. Stark," I placed a hand on his chest and gently pushed him away from me. "If we're gonna have a problem while I'm here, then I suggest that we take care of it. I don't mind getting messy. What about you?"
That settled it.
We were most definitely not gonna get along with each other. The instant animosity was enough to determine that.
"There's no problem," he backed away from me with his glass raised in the air. "Welcome to the team, Newbie. Try not to screw anything up and leave the hard work to the adults. Okay? Thanks. Bye!"
Then Mr. Stark grabbed the phone he placed on the counter and left the room.
"Well....that could have gone a lot more better," I said as I scratched my head awkwardly.
"Don't worry about it, Maya. He's usually like that. You'll get used to it. It took me months to try not to punch him in the face," Agent Barton said as he watched Stark go.
"In the mean time lets go and get you to your room," Natasha said. "You boys make sure that Stark doesn't do anything stupid."
Natasha guided me back to the elevator and pressed a button that sent the both of us down a few floors.
"I hope you know that this isn't gonna be a cake walk," she said. "This team isn't exactly as welcoming as us."
"I didn't say yes because I wanted an adrenaline rush."
"So why did you say yes to Fury then?" She asked me as we got off the elevator. The both of us stepped into a corridor which was stylishly decorated.
"I guess I couldn't argue with his logic," I chuckled. "You ask too many questions, Agent Romanoff."
"I only asked one."
"One is too much."
"I understand," she said as she opened the door for me. "You've got some red in your ledger, don't you?"
"Thanks," I said. "But mine can't be removed with just good deeds alone."
Agent Romanoff didn't say anything as she walked into the room.
"This is you room. You'll be sharing the floor with he-who-shall-not-be-named just across from you. I'd suggest not getting too friendly with him."
I couldn't help but let out a small laugh.
"Harry Potter. It's been a while since I've read those books. I didn't get to read The Deathly Hollows because I was---" I stopped myself short. "Right. I'll keep an eye out for him."
"Then we'll be good. Here's your key to your room. If you have any questions, you can just ask FRIDAY," she said as she passed my my key on a chain.
"FRIDAY?"
"That would be me, Agent 20. Welcome to Stark Tower," the AI said from some magical speaker.
"Would you look at that," I said looking around the room. "Thanks, Agent Romanoff. And thank you, FRIDAY."
"Of course, Agent 20."
"Call me Maya, FRIDAY."
"Of course, Maya."
Pretty standard and very big. It must have been at least half of the goddamn floor. There was a nice Queen sized bed, a standard desk with some bookshelves, and a few decorative items that I would most likely change.
"Anytime. Welcome to the team," she said as she closed the door.
I was in a new place in a new city with some new faces. My stress levels must have increased. I flopped onto the Queen's size bed and laid my arm over my eyes. I didn't realize how much sleep I needed.
"So....you're the newest member?" Someone asked.
Seriously? Just when I was getting comfortable. Any more surprises or is that all of them?
I sat back up, glaring at the direction from where the voice came from.
"Stop sulking in the shadows and face me," I said. My hand went to my boot went to my hip where my gun was.
"Strait to the point I see," the gentleman in green and black leather said as he walked out from the shadows. In his hand he held some sort on book that clearly had some witchyness to it. "I didn't know that we would be sharing a floor together. No one told me."
"You're Loki," I said. "Nobody told me that I'd be sharing a floor with a disgraced Demi-God."
"Disgrace Demi-God?" He asked as if I had insulted him.
Here we go again.
Well done, Maya. Anyone else you want to make your enemy? Like the Hulk perhaps? Or maybe Thor?
I did not like the sound of that. Repeat, I did not like the sound of that a single goddamn frigging bit. I could feel the temperature lower as he walked closer to me.
The closer he got, the more I could see him.
He had a nice angular face with thin lips and a sharp nose that suit his face.
He stopped about a foot away from me, causing me to look up at him. Damnit, he was tall too. I don't trust tall people. They like to squish the small guys, like me.
His eyes were odd. Shifting from blue to green and then back again, almost like he was fighting two sides of a war. They flashed a deep emerald green as he regarded me.
I didn't trust this guy, not because he was tall, but the fact that this guy just screamed danger.
"I don't trust you."
"How rude," he said with displeasure. "You looked like an ally."
I placed a hand on his chest and pushed him away. I had to do that a lot today. Did anyone understand the whole thing about private space? Clearly not.
"What are you doing in my room?"
"Your room?" He asked. He walked around as if he owned the place. "Is that why you're here? This is my reading room. The question is what are you doing in my reading room, mortal?"
"One, my name's not 'Mortal.' Two, I've been given this room and your welcome to use it as your reading den when I'm not here."
"But you just said----"
"Yeah. I know. Trust me on this. I know how important it is to find a nice place to read so you can come in here only if I'm in here. Just don't touch any of my stuff, Prancer. Plus the only thing that's important is my books."
"You just said you don't trust me."
"I don't. Do I look like an idiot to you?" I raised my eyebrow at the arrogant bastard. Geez, and here I thought Stark was worse. "I said only when I was present in the room. At least I can keep an eye on you. I won't hesitate to take you down if you irritate me."
"Hmm."
"What?"
"You're a strong Midguardian."
"How else do you survive?"
"Very well, then. I'll be taking my leave, Mortal," he said as he gathered his books from the room and walked out of the door. The room was silent (that seems to happen a lot) and for some reason, I had a bad feeling about this.
I've been getting this feeling a lot.
"Any more surprises, FRIDAY?"
"You're schedule is clear for today, Maya."
"Wonderful."
I walked up to my bed and fell on top of it face first.
