The voices of the guards rang close by and I was half tempted to yell at them to shut up.

That would have been a bad idea because I had no intention on getting on their bad side, especially so early in the morning.

I needed those morons for things that were hard to get, such as pineapples and books.

I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes as I tossed the covers off me.

There was nothing like the sound of prison in the morning. I stretched and then dropped down to the floor.

For five years I kept up my work out routine.

One hundred push ups, sit ups, pulls and so on.

The man who put me here was kind enough to give me a punching bag to release all my pent up anger. Trust me, there was a lot. No wonder there were guards in front of the door to my cell every waking moment.

Too bad they didn't shut up.

Luckily, I had a calendar to keep track of the days I had spent in solitary confinement.

Speaking of my cell, it was a cozy, snug place mind the drafts. It had its own bathroom, a bookshelf, a tiny wardrobe, a small cot and a desk. It was more life a nice apartment way out in the Atlantic. I couldn't complain, it was better than most prisons.

I heard my cell door open behind and the steps of a couple of guards with bored expressions. I get up and pull my white jumpsuit over my shoulders, underneath I wore a black tank top drenched in sweat.

"You have a visitor!" Guard number one said.

"What visitors?" I asked, tugging my hair into a low pony tail. "I thought that I don't get any visitors."

"You don't," the second guard said. "But this is important. I suggest you don't bad mouth him or else."

"Oooh, scary."

Neither of them said anything.

I rolled my eyes, waving my hand to dismiss them. "You two are no fun."

I turned around to meet see a familiar face, one I haven't seen in the last five years.

"Director Fury," I greeted.

"I believe that was one of your conditions but this is a unique situation." he said as he sat down on a stool across from me. "Take a seat, Maya. I'm short on time so we have only five minutes before I leave."

The guards seemed reluctant to leave but Fury glared at them with his one good eye.

"Director," I said, curtly as I say down on my bed. "What brings you to my humble jail cell?"

"I need you to come with me, Maya."

"What?"  I asked confused.

"I need your help," he said. "Three days ago, someone broke into several of our black sites. They've all been hit in the last several months and--"

"Does this have anything to do with me?"

"Yes." He pulled out a yellow envelope from his jacket. "We believe that you are next and since your abilities are too dangerous, I've decided to put you with a team of people who are also enhanced. This is the letter that states that you are now apart of the-"

Back up! Hold on! Wait a goddam minute!

Team?!

"You want me to join a team?" I exclaimed, standing up suddenly. "Really, Fury? Did my whole speech about not wanting to endanger people until I could control myself even register in your mind?"

"We have five minutes," he said looking down at his watch.

"My answer is no. I'll prefer to stay here in this cell." I crossed my arms and sent a glare at the Director.

"Maya, how long do you intend to stay here?"

"For the rest of my life," I said, turning my back towards him. "Or at least I can control my so called gift."

"And if you can't?"

"Then I can't," I chuckled humorously. "I'll just end it."

"That's an extreme measure and trust me, I've taken some very extreme measures before."

"I'm not coming, Fury. No matter what you say." I sighed.

I walked over to my bookshelf, scanning the familiar titles. Which one would I read today?

He took a deep breath and glanced at his watch. "Three minutes," he murmured to himself. "Let me put it this way. An international terrorist organization that kidnapped people and experimented on them is coming back for you. Your safety is compromised and you refuse to move because you don't want to face the world?"

"I don't want face the world, I just don't want to endanger it." I explained. I pulled a random book out, my fingers flipping to a random page.

"You're in danger here," he snapped. Fury early showed emotion. "And how do you know you're a danger to the world? Have you even actually tried to use your abilities? You lost control that one time and you just lock yourself away as if you're some criminal?" Fury looked down to his watch once more. "Two minutes."

"Yes, I have." I looked down at my hands. I could still see the blood stains that had been washed away. "People died and if you put me on that team, more people will die. And what are you talking about, Fury. I am a criminal. I didn't exactly leave a trail of daisies behind me, you know."

"That's not how I see it."

If this was any other situation, I would have made a pun about his eye.

"What do you see then?"

"I see a person who thinks they think they've done bad and regrets everything. You're not the first person I've seen like this, Maya. I've visited many people who regret the things that they've done."

"So what's the difference between me and them?" I asked.

"They actually came with me when I gave them a chance at freedom."

"Freedom?"

"By the way, one minute and thirty seconds."

"Fury," I got up and started to pace around my room. "Why?"

"Because instead of wasting away in some white cell you can do some good with your abilities regardless of what you think. In about a minute, I'm going to walk out of that door and after that you could beg all you want but you won't be leaving this cell. I know you want to leave, Maya. How many nights have you wondered about what's going on outside. So you can either come with me or you can stay."

Even though I was annoyed with Director Fury, the bastard knew how to get into my brain. I couldn't deny his logic but then again I didn't agree with it either.

It's been five years. Five years since I've seen the outside world. Since I've had any human contact. Maybe he was right, I was wasting myself away in this cell in a concoction of pity and self hate but I was here for a reason.

I sat down in front of him, my book in hand.

Damn him and SHIELD for getting under my skin.

Damn them all!

"You're a manipulative son of a bitch, you know that?" I laugh humorously. I put my head in my hands, fingers clutching at my hair. "I don't understand why."

"It's all part of the job. Seriously. Banner took less time to convince to join the team than you. Thirty seconds, agent. Make up your mind now."

I am going to regret this so much.

"Ten seconds."

I am really going to regret this.

"Five seconds, agent!"

"Fine, Fury. You win," I growled.

I opened up the envelope, ripped it open and signed my name of the piece of paper.

"I'll join your team but the moment that something goes south, I want you to put me back in this cell."

"Deal." He gets up. "Let's go, agent."
