Vera
Vera looked in the mirror intently and closed my eyes. When she opened them they had receded from the lime green shade they had once been. She let out a breath of relief and reset the head band in her hair. There was this... thing... about her. She could manipulate minds, and sometimes she couldn't control herself. In class she had made the teacher forget about her snooze fest, but her eyes had almost given her away. It was hard to fit in when she had to pull her hoodie over her head and rush to the bathroom every time she messed up. Not that fitting in really worked any way. She walked back to her classroom with long strides and raised her chin up high before opening the door. She quietly took her seat and listened to the teacher drone on about the way The Nation was set up. Each zodiac sign had their own school... children were separated from parents of different signs at the age of fourteen... etc. It had been two years since she left her parents. It was almost impossible to live without them, or not dwell on the loss of their presence. In the school she was in now every sign learned together, but everyone was monitored closely. It was unnerving. If you spoke with a sign you weren't compatible with you would get a minus. Three of these and you were marked as a lower class in The Nation. Lower class meant worse job, living conditions, and an arranged marriage from your parents. Vera had never gotten a minus before and didn't wish to. The Nation may be a bunch of crazy idiots who threw together an overbearing society but she didn't want to be a lower class. As it was life wasn't that bad for her. She wasn't missing anything as far as talking to the other signs. The only thing that bothered her was her power... Why had she been given this. How come it was so important for her to hide it-
...
With that she drifted off to sleep, the soft melody of the fan soothing her thoughts. Getting into illegal computer programs late at night takes a lot out of someone.
Chaos
Chaos finished his studying and rolled over out of his bed. He did all his studying in bed, it was way more fun that way. In long strides he made his way across the room and to the window on the other side. The Nation didn't want anyone out after dark, so the windows were rigged with alarms. To be honest they worked terribly. As if it were routine, Chaos pried open the small control panel for the alarm and unplugged a few wires. These dorms really needed to up their tech- or, rather, not up their tech so he could keep sneaking out. He slid the window open and his heart skipped a beat. The two story drop never got old. First he slid his legs out and then his torso until he was outside the dorm. His feet balanced precariously on the small plastic ledge of the window below him. Making sure he no lights were on and no one was around, Chaos jumped out and landed softly on the grass below him. Not that he needed to jump, it was just more fun. He could always fly down, a thing that set him apart from others. He could lift himself off the ground. Although it may seem fun, it was scarier than leaping, because of the amount of strength it took to keep himself in the air for more than a few seconds. Now on the ground, Chaos dodged the motion activated lights and jogged over to the second girls dorm. There he carefully climbed up to the third window and tapped on Bianca's. They had agreed to always meet up. Although their signs weren't compatible, Chaos couldn't stay away from her for a few seconds. They would take turns sneaking out late to each others dorms. By now it was routine, but not tonight. Chaos wasn't ready for the officer inside Bianca's room.
Eli
Every single night... Eli cursed under his breath and opened the door to his dorm. Well, it wasn't every night... it was most nights regardless.
"Your Chosen has a scheduled meeting with you tonight. We will not monitor this one, but you have one hour." The Officer at the door said in a gruff tone. Then Haylee stepped out from behind him shyly.
"H-hi.."
Eli plastered on a smile and waved. "Hi sweetie!" He said in a voice that almost made him gag.
The officer backed out of the room and closed the doorway. Haylee ran up to Eli and hugged him. This time he had a real smile on his face, which disappeared quickly when he saw the worry on Haylee's face. He pulled away from the small girl and asked,
"Now, why are you here? I was getting ready to go to sleep."
She looked guilty but explained quickly."It's my power. I swear, it's getting stronger."
"For the millionth time, Haylee, I promise, your power is the same!" Eli was growing exasperated. The little girl before him was not her Chosen, it was a lie. To Eli, Haylee was like a little sister. In order to keep in touch, though, they decided they would play pretend. Haylee opened the palm of her hand and a lick of flame danced into the air, and almost immediately after disappeared. Eli, forgetting his frustration, smiled.
"While your here, you might as well practice." He said matter-of-factly, trying to hide his excitement that he got to see her play with fire. He walked to the tiny dorm kitchen and dug in an over- stuffed drawer until he pulled out a box of matches.
"Is that even allowed?" Haylee questioned when she saw what Eli was holding.
"Umm.... no." He replied hesitantly. She didn't need any ideas. He quickly lit one matched and watched intently as Haylee cupped her hands and made the flame dance in the air. Eventually she closed her fist around it and it was snuffed out.
Haylee blushed at the look of shock on Eli's face, and quickly embraced him in a hug, whispering
"The officer is coming back."
Eli had learned not to question her instincts and threw the box of matches under a couch cushion moments before the officer came in and grabbed Haylee's arm.
"Time for you to leave." He said gruffly, and Haylee's blonde head disappeared around the door. Eli sighed in relief, closing the door and collapsing onto his bed.
