33. Seeing the Real Person

The next afternoon, Dumbledore summoned Rob to his office. Rob wasn't sure what the headmaster wanted him for. He assumed it was something to do with the events of the final task.

Rob made his way up the stairs and into Dumbledore's office. He saw the headmaster standing beside a large stone basin. He was staring into it and muttering to himself.

When Dumbledore realised that Rob was watching him, he stepped away from the basin. "Ahhh, Dursley. Come sit down," he said.

Rob sat down, and Dumbledore picked up a small bowl of sweets from the table. "Would you care for a lemon sherbet?" he asked.

"Yes, thank you," said Rob, as he took a sweet.

Dumbledore took a sweet himself as he sat down opposite Rob. He sat quietly sucking on the sweet for a few minutes. The silence felt quite uncomfortable for Rob.

Dumbledore had decided to reverse the transfiguration, if that was what Rob chose. But he had decided against telling him the whole truth. Dumbledore felt that to discover your whole existence was a lie would be too much to handle. It was the kind of thing you would need to talk to a therapist about. But that was not something they had access to in Hogwarts.

Eventually, Dumbledore finished sucking his sweet, and he realised he couldn't delay speaking any longer.

"I have been speaking to Professors McGonagall and Snape about you," he said. "And about your, err, situation."

"Okay," said Rob.

"Your, err, body not matching your emotions, or something," said Dumbledore.

Rob felt a pang of anger inside him. He was about to snap at Dumbledore, but he stopped himself. He got the feeling that the old man was trying to be understanding. He mentally counted to ten before replying.

"Yeah, something like that," said Rob.

"Well, err, I could help you with that," said Dumbledore. "I mean, if you wanted me to?"

Rob was uncertain what Dumbledore meant by that, and felt nervous about what he might be agreeing to. "What kind of help?" he asked.

"There are human transfiguration spells that can change a person's gender," said Dumbledore. "Rare and powerful spells, the most powerful of these can transform a person's biology completely."

"Their gender? Do you mean I would be physically male?" Rob asked.

"Yes, if that was what you wanted?" Dumbledore said. "Your body would match, err, your gender."

Rob was quiet as he thought about what Dumbledore had said. Part of him wanted to just say yes. He wanted to be physically male, but he wasn't sure how that would feel. His body was the only one he had ever known, for it to change so dramatically was hard to comprehend. Was that what Rob wanted?

But then Rob thought about it from the other direction. He was definitely sure that he didn't want his body to become more feminine in appearance. He had been taking the potion from Snape to stop him from changing to look more feminine. So maybe that meant he did want to be changed.

"So, what do you think?" Dumbledore asked. "Would you want me to make the change?"

"I think so," said Rob.

"I can give you more time to decide," said Dumbledore. "If you want to talk to your friends first?"

Rob thought about it for a moment, but then had a rush of decisiveness. "No. Do it now," he said. "Make the change."

Dumbledore stood up and solemnly pulled out his wand. "Stand up, and close your eyes," he said.

Rob stood up nervously. He had been certain a moment ago, but now doubts began to appear. What would people think if he suddenly looked different? How would they react towards him?

Dumbledore steadied his breath, then swished his wand and cast the spell.

Rob felt an odd sensation pass through his body. Like a wave of pins and needles that was gone again in an instant.

Rob opened his eyes and looked down. He wasn't sure if he looked any different. Maybe he was a little stockier, and his stomach a little wider, but he wasn't sure.

"Did it... Woah," said Rob.

His voice sounded completely different. It was deeper, and lower pitched.

"My voice," he said. "Hello? Helloooo. That sounds really weird."

Dumbledore smiled. "There's a mirror over there, by the pensieve," he said.

Rob wasn't sure what a pensieve was, but he turned to where Dumbledore was pointing. There he saw a small mirror beside a stone basin.

Rob walked over and looked in the mirror. The face that looked back at him looked oddly familiar, but at the same time, very different. Rob studied his new face carefully.

His chin and jaw looked a lot wider. Also his lips looked thinner and his cheekbones were not as defined. His eyes still looked the same though, and he still had the same scar on his forehead.

"That's weird," said Rob, as he stared at himself in the mirror.

"That is how you would have looked normally, err, if you had been born male I mean," said Dumbledore.

"Yeah, I guess I kind of still look like me," said Rob.

"Yes, I'm sure it will take some getting used to," said Dumbledore. "But if you have any problems, talk to Professor McGonagall or Madam Pomfrey. I am sure they will be able to explain the changes to you."

"Could I ask you some questions, Professor?" Rob asked.

"Oh, well I've got a lot of, err, headmaster type business to attend to now," said Dumbledore. "It's not a good time for questions."

"Okay. I guess I should go then?" said Rob.

"Yes, that's right. Off you go," said Dumbledore.

Rob left Dumbledore's office and walked back down the stairs. Even doing that felt different somehow. His body had subtly changed size and shape. He was sure he had grown a few inches taller.

Also, other parts of his body had grown larger too. His chest felt bigger, and the bra he had been wearing was now too tight and constricting his breathing. He would have to take it off before it got too uncomfortable. Rob decided to head to his dormitory to change his clothes.

When Rob entered the Gryffindor common room, he saw Ron and Hermione sitting by the fireplace. They both glanced up when they heard the door open. When they saw Rob, they both had confused stares.

"Rob? Is that you?" Ron asked.

"Yeah," he said.

"Bloody hell. What happened?" said Ron.

"It was Dumbledore, he transfigured me," said Rob.

Ron and Hermione stood up and walked over for a closer look.

"Wow," said Hermione. "Is it a complete change, or just your face?"

"I've changed completely," said Rob.

"So what does the rest of you look like?" Hermione asked.

Rob blushed. "I don't know, I haven't looked," he said.

Hermione blushed too. "That's not what I meant," she said. "I meant, err, you look taller."

"Yeah, you've definitely grown mate," said Ron.

"Yes, I have. And now my clothes feel uncomfortable in different places," said Rob. "Like my underwear is too tight now."

Ron laughed. "Yeah, I know what you mean," he said.

"Umm, okay. So I was going to go upstairs and change," said Rob.

"Okay. We'll wait down here. We've got some time before our next lesson," said Ron.

Rob then went up the stairs to the dormitory. When he got there, he started to take off his robes and his shirt. The bra he was wearing underneath was now stretched tight. He had to slip the straps off his shoulders and twist it round to unclip it.

Once the bra was off, Rob looked at himself in the mirror. His chest looked flatter and more muscular than before. He kept looking at his reflection for a few minutes, before he put his shirt back on.

When he was dressed, Rob went back downstairs to the common room. Then he went with Ron and Hermione to their next lesson.
