3. Platform 9 3/4
When Rose returned home, she couldn't wait to tell her mum all about the wonderful things she had seen. But Mrs Dursley didn't seem to be that interested.
"Yes, I've heard it all before," she said. "My sister used to say the same things."
"Are you not happy for me, mum?" Rose asked, sadly.
"Oh, of course I am, sweetie," said Mrs Dursley. "It's just the magic stuff always made me feel uncomfortable."
Rose took all of her new books and magical things upstairs to her room. She then spent the next few weeks reading through her books and learning about magic. As the weeks went on, Mrs Dursley started to accept the idea of her daughter being a witch. She hadn't always understood Rose, but she always wanted to see her happy. In the past week she had realised that perhaps magic was the thing missing from Rose's life.
Mr Dursley just wanted to see his little girl being happy. He had not liked all of that magic stuff, but when he saw the smile on Rose's face, he instantly changed his mind.
Rose had been sad at first with the way her parents had reacted when she found out she was a witch. But as their opinions softened, she became much happier. When she sat on her dad's lap and told him all about the things she was reading, he seemed like he was actually interested.
Soon it was the end of the holidays and time for Rose to travel to Hogwarts. She was packing up her things into the trunk she bought, when she heard someone knocking at the door. She rushed down the stairs to see who it was, and when she opened the door, she found Hagrid stood there.
"Hello again, Rose," he said.
Rose smiled at him cheerfully. "Hi, Hagrid. How are you doing?" she asked.
"I'm good," said Hagrid. "But I can't stay long, there's just something I forgot to give you last time."
Rose took the piece of paper that Hagrid was offering to her. "What is it?"
"It's your ticket for the Hogwarts Express," said Hagrid.
Rose looked carefully at what was printed on the ticket. "Hmmm, platform 9 3/4... Kings cross station... and tomorrow's date?"
"Yeah, sorry about that. Meant to bring it sooner," said Hagrid. "But yeah, the train for Hogwarts leaves tomorrow morning."
"Cool. I better finish packing my stuff," said Rose, then she rushed back up to her room.
The next morning, Mr Dursley helped to carry Rose's trunk down the stairs and put it in the back of the car. Then everyone got in the car and they drove into King's cross.
Once Mr Dursley had parked the car, they took the trunk out and walked into the station. Rose looked at the signs and tried to spot one for platform 9 3/4. They wandered around for a while, but could not find where to go. Rose was starting to worry when she heard a voice nearby.
"It's the same every year, full of muggles," the woman said.
Rose looked around to see a woman leading a group of children with red hair. Rose walked over to her nervously.
"Excuse me, do you know how to find platform 9 3/4?" Rose asked.
"Oh course, dear," she said. "Is it your first time?"
Rose nodded.
"Well I'm Molly," she said. "It's Ron's first time too."
Ron had been staring at Rose, but when his mum mentioned his name, he quickly blushed and looked away. After a moment, Ron shuffled forward and turned his head down to look at his feet. "Hello," he mumbled.
Rose looked at Ron for a moment. He seemed to be about the same age as her, but he was a lot taller than she was. He was wearing some slightly scruffy clothes and had an untidy mop of red hair on top of his head. He seemed like the kind of boy she would like to be friends with.
"Hi, I'm Rose" she said.
"Ron, you be a good boy and look after her on the train," said Molly.
Ron shuffled from one foot to the other. "Okay, mum."
"Anyway, to get onto platform 9 3/4 you just need to aim at the wall between platforms 9 and 10," said Molly. "Just copy what Percy does."
Rose watched as the older boy walked straight into the wall and disappeared from sight. When Mrs Dursley saw the boy vanish, she nearly fainted. Mr Dursley stepped forward to catch her before she fell.
"No, I can't do it," said Mrs Dursley.
"It's too far," said Mr Dursley.
"It's okay, mum," said Rose. "Let's just say goodbye now, then I'll go to the platform on my own."
Mrs Dursley pulled Rose in for a big hug. "Goodbye," she said. "I hope you have a great time."
Rose then jumped up, put her arms around her dad's neck, and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "I will miss you all," she said.
Then Rose grabbed the handles of her trolley and rushed towards the wall. She shut her eyes and winced as she was about to crash into the wall, but instead she passed through as if there was nothing there. When Rose opened her eyes again, she found herself standing on a completely different platform. On the tracks beside the platform there was a big, red steam train.
"That's the Hogwarts Express," said Ron, as he appeared on the platform beside her.
"Cool," said Rose.
"Come on, let's get on before all the good seats are taken," he said.
Rose followed Ron as he stepped up into one of the carriages. They walked along the corridor, checking in the doors until he found an empty compartment. They had just sat down, when the train blew its whistle and started to move. And there began the journey to Hogwarts.
