(9) Target Practice

The next morning I drag my feet to the training room. Sebastian is waiting and hands me a bottle of water.

"So, I know you are tired, but we are going to have to kick it into high gear. We need to go over knifes and practice fighting. Tomorrow is the next round of fights and before you try to argue, you are staying in my room tonight. You need to be at your very best for the fight."

I nod and take the bottle. I take a sip before setting it down on the floor. "Let's get started then."

He hands me a knife and smirks. "Watch and learn." He has three knives in his hands and each time he throws one, it hits the target. The first time I focus on his stance, then him throwing, and lastly his breathing.

For a few minutes, I pretend to throw the knife to make sure I have the correct stance and whatnot. Fifteen minutes later, I'm getting the hang of throwing knives and making sure they stick to the target. I walk up to the target to receive my knives and Sebastian holds his hands out. I give him the knives.

"We are going to switch it up. Let's brush up on your gun skills. We wouldn't want you to forget." Sebastian explains.

"You do realize that I used the paintball gun last night, right?"

"Yes, but this is target practice."

"So, the real deal doesn't matter?"

"Rory," he warns.

I grin and hold my hand out for the gun. Instead, he puts his hand in mine. I give him a look. "Now who's being distracting?"

He laughs and removes his hand replaces it with a gun. Part of me wishes it wasn't the gun, but I refocus and begin target practice with the gun. I practice with the gun for about an hour and then switch back to the knife until we stop for lunch.

"You are doing well, Rory." Sebastian states as we walk to the dining hall. "With learning everything I mean."

I glance at him. "I'll take that as I'm becoming Dauntless." I'm becoming Divergent.

He grins and throws his right arm around my shoulders. "Of course you are." He leans even closer to me and whispers. "Just be careful." He removes his arm and we part ways once we enter the dining hall.

Ember updates me on how her training is going and I do the same with her. I also tell her that I won't be in the bunk tonight and she reassures me that she will be fine.

I walk back to the training room and Sebastian twirling a knife around in his hand. "You okay?"

He glances at me and nods. "I found out during lunch that there will be a test on how well the initiates can shoot a gun and throw a knife."

"When?"

"After training. We need to change our plans. We already practiced with the knife and gun for today which is good. I've always had you practice in here for your advantage, but some of the other initiates may not like the idea of that. So, here's my thought: we practice fighting in my room. There is enough room and once we finish, then we can walk in with the other initiates to the training room."

"Okay. I'd rather avoid having a target on my back."

Sebastian nods and we head up to his room. We move some of his furniture around in his room so we have enough room to fight. Time seems to fly by and soon we are heading back to the training room for me to be tested. The room is filled with my fellow initiates and for a moment I question whether we are in the correct room because I am so used to it being just Sebastian and I.

Within minutes we are all lined up in front of targets and guns in our hands. It makes me think we are in the military – Dauntless is a lot like the military though.

"Results will be posted tomorrow before the fights. For those of you that do horrible now, it may give you inspiration to do better during your fight. You may begin!" One of the Dauntless leaders explains.

I take a deep breath and raise my gun from my side.

A/N:

I'm so sorry for the wait. Life has been crazy. I hope to update a lot quicker than last time. Enjoy the double update!
