(5) Sleep

A hand touches my shoulder and adrenaline pumps through me as my heart races. I spin around and elbow the person in the stomach.

The person grunts and doubles over. "Good to know you learned what I've taught you," he mumbles.

I let out a breath that I didn't know I was holding. "Don't do that! It's already creepy enough down here without people sneaking up on other people."

He stands up straight and apologizes for scaring me. "I just wanted to make sure that you got back to the bunker safely, but now I know that you can protect yourself."

"Do you actually think someone would hurt me?" I ask him warily.

"This is Dauntless, Rory. Who ever wins will have a target on their back. Don't trust anyone." He explains with his arms crossed.

"Including you?" I raise an eyebrow.

He rolls his eyes. "Mentors are supposed to be on your side."

"Supposed to be," I mock and start to walk away from him.

"You can always trust me," he mutters loud enough for me to hear.

I rush back to the bunker without any further incident and lay down on my bed. Some people are already there, but the majority of people are still not back yet. I stare at the ceiling and listen to the conversations floating around the bunker. Nothing essential for Dauntless, but it helps pass the time.

Ember skips into the bunker with a huge smile on her face. She shows me her new flower tattoo on her forearm and I wish that I would have stayed with her while she got it especially, when she says a woman named Tori did it. I need to talk to Tori to see if she will tell me anything else about being Divergent. While I listen to Ember, most of the missing intiates wander in and settle in their own beds. Ember yawns and tells me goodnight. The lights dim down to where there is almost no light, but I don't sleep most of the night. I may have gotten a couple hours of sleep; I'm a very light sleeper.

During breakfast, I got a cup of coffee to try to wake up and rid the sleep from my body. Ember is very much a morning person. She was cheerful and peppy. Me? Not so much. Before breakfast, Ember and I blocked each other while one of us changed. I changed into long sleeve shirt, black shorts, and black high tops.

I meet Sebastian in the fighting room. He's punching and kicking a punching bag and I stop and watch him for a few minutes. It amazes me that his movements are fluent and purposeful. I walk toward him slowly. "How do you do that?"

He spins around startled, but relaxes when he sees that it is just me. He shrugs and wipes the sweat from his forehead. "Lots of practice. Are you ready to start? The first round of fights are at the end of the week."

By the end of the day I'm bruised from not dodging Sebastian's punches or kicks and I am more than ready to lay in bed and do nothing. Ember doesn't think she is learning much during her training. Both of us are nervous for the first round of fights.

For the next four days and three nights, it is the same routine. Eat, train with Sebastian, and sleep for a couple hours.

"How are you doing?" Sebastian questions once we finish our last training session for the week.

I shrug and drink some water. "Good I guess. I'm nervous for the first round of fights."

"Have you been sleeping?" I avoid his unwavering gaze. "Rory," he says and I look up at me. "Come with me."

"Where are we going?" I question.

"My place so you can get some sleep."

My eyes widen and I can feel heat rising to my cheeks. I step back from him and am about to argue when he begins talking.

"I'm just showing you. I've got to do my other job duties. Relax. I'm not that kind of guy." He reassures me.

I nod and try to get rid of the blush on my cheeks. I follow him to his place. He let's me in and rubs the back of his neck.

"It's not the cleanest, but there's some food on the counter if you get hungry." I nod to acknowledge that I heard him. "I'll be back in a little while." He leaves and I'm left his apartment like space. I ignore my thoughts about how this is wrong and accept that this is the only way I'll be able to sleep. I turn all the lights off and lay down on his bed. Within minutes, I'm out for the count.
