(3) Beef
When all the initiates are on the ground again, we are lead by two training leaders. The corridors are wide enough for four people to walk side by side. It's very dark, but shouldn't be surprised since we just jumped a few levels down. The leaders stop and turn facing us causing us to stop as well.
"Here's where we part ways," Lauren, one of the leaders, says. "There are only 20 of you initiates (Dauntless-born and transfers) that made it here. You will receive a Mentor to help you train and get to know the Dauntless compound tomorrow. If you feel like you don't need a Mentor, then opt out. However, I assure you if you don't accept your Mentor, you will not survive Dauntless initiation. For now, you may explore Dauntless just don't be an idiot. There is a big difference between bravery and idiocy."
Ember locks her arm around mine and I glance at her. She smiles apologetically and shrugs. "We're in this together. Where do you want to explore first?"
"Let's find where they keep the food in this place."
Ember agrees and we start wandering Dauntless in search of something good to eat. We stumble upon the Chasm first. On the left side there is calm water, but on the right, there is rushing white water that slams into jagged rocks. My stomach churns and Ember is frozen in place.
"Let's keep going," I whisper and we continue on our journey.
After a few minutes of searching, we start to hear a lot noise. From following those sounds, we enter the dining hall. Ember picks a table with some of the other initiates and we sit down. I look at the food in front of me and my eyebrows not together. I glance at Ember and she has the same look on her face.
"What is this exactly?" She questions.
"It's a hamburger. The meat is beef." A Dauntless member explains.
She drops her hamburger and a horrified look crosses her face. "You mean this used to be a cow and people eat it!"
"It tastes good," the Dauntless member says.
"If you try it, I will." She says turning to me.
I nod.
"Put this on it first," the Dauntless member says while pushing a bowl of red sauce toward me.
After eating the hamburger which did in fact taste pretty good, we continued exploring Dauntless once we said goodbye to Trey who was the Dauntless member that was sitting at the table with us. We followed different noise and ended up at the Pit. All kinds of Dauntless members were around. Kids were running around, some younger teenagers were roughhousing, some couples were kissing, and adults were socializing. Next we went to our bunker where we would be sleeping. The boys were not separated from us and neither was the Dauntless-born. It was strange and would take some time to get used to.
There were clothes for us to change into, but I didn't want to change out of my Abnegation clothes just yet. I just needed one more night. This was all new and somewhat overwhelming.
The bunker to my right was occupied Ember and to my left was lean Dauntless-born guy.
There are so many people in one area that I have a hard time falling asleep. I've always been a light sleeper. After tossing and turning for who knows how long, I give up and stare at the ceiling. Someone starts snoring and I inwardly groan.
Divergent. The word is whispered in my mind and a shudder runs through my body. I can't tell anyone. No one can know. I'll always be in danger. It's just waiting game before something happens.
