1// Long Year
(Sorry! Photo is blurry)
"Ariana!" Mother shouted upstairs. Ariana shoved clothes into her bag, anything she could fit. She shoved her toiletries in last, attempting to zip her duffel bag. The zipper jammed, and she cursed.
"Ariana! Get down here! Your breakfast is getting cold!" Her mother shouted again, and she flung her door open. "Lemme get dressed first!"
"What have you been doing up there, Ariana? We need to go!"
Ariana sighed, frustrated. She squeezed into a pair of skinny jeans, shoved on a blue T-shirt, and put on her Uggs. Quickly running a brush through her matted brown hair, she flung herself downstairs, only to be met with her mother, glaring fiercely. She ignored the glare, sitting down into a bar stool. She quickly ate her cold eggs, bacon, and cheesy grits, all the while looking away from her mother.
"Hurry up and grab your bag, we've run out of time," her mother told her as she finished. She dashed upstairs and grabbed her bag, and because the zipper was jammed, all her wrinkled clothes came tumbling out.
"Shit," she cursed loudly and started shoving her clothes back in. Her mother could be heard stomping up the stairs, and Ariana's brain went into overdrive. She shoved in all her clothes, ripping the zipper so hard it broke off.
She turned, her bag on her shoulder in an odd position to keep her clothes from tumbling out again. Her mother was in the doorway, tapping her foot impatiently. Ariana reddened and stood awkwardly in front of her, waiting for the yelling.
"C'mon, Ariana," Mother said softly, turning away. Ariana worried. Her mother was never like this. Even when her father died, she stood tall, almost defiantly, refusing to let this hurt her.
While Ariana was sobbing her head off.
She doesn't remember Father that well, as she was only 13, but she remembers that day clearly. Father was a construction worker, so there were many dangers that stood in his way. When mother got a phone call from his company, Ariana was worried. They didn't usually call. Around that time of the day, Father called during his break. Instead, they had called and told Mother that he had fallen off a high metal beam and broke his neck.
Not a single sob was heard coming from her mother. Ariana sobbed crazily while her mother patted her back awkwardly. Mother was never the person that did well around emotional people. Just a stiff hug and words of assurance.
And while Ariana rushed to the car and jumped in, she was thinking about how proud her father would've been. She got into UGA, the college all her classmates wished they could get into. She was aspiring to be a Veterinarian, all for her love of animals.
"So, are you excited?" Mother's voice cut into Ariana's thoughts, and her head whipped up. "Extremely excited!" She responded, her excitement bubbling over. The classes, the intelligent classmates, intense conversations..
She wasn't just excited, she was ecstatic. There was nothing that could stop her from expecting the best from this school. She had applied to the best of the best for a reason. She stared out the window, imagining having a room all to herself. She was not planning to share a room, only because this school was not sex separated. Men and women shared rooms.
Ariana found it revolting. How could people allow that? She was sure there was a lot of sexual activity going around in the dorms.
Ariana checked her schedule, and she smiled. She had gotten the classes she wanted, the early classes that dismissed early in the morning so she'd have all day to explore the campus. She had Math first period, which she wasn't looking forward to. She hated math.
And it said she was in room 32B. Relatively close to her classes, which are in Building A.
------
At some point, She had dozed off, because Mother shook her awake. "We've arrived. And look, we're parked right outside Building B."
Ariana sat up straight, looking at the campus before her. It was large, definitely large. The large white brick columns are what held the huge buildings in place. She gawked at the complexity of it all. It was so fancy; she stood out like a sore thumb in the school made for rich arrogant bastards.
There was a hallway, marked with a giant B, and Ariana led her mother down that hall. They stopped outside of room 32B, and her mother pulled her into a hug. "Have fun," was all she said, before she started back down the hall. Ariana was stunned. She still couldn't believe she was here.
She turned back to her door, pulling out her key. Just as she was about to put it in the lock, he door opened, and she gawked. It was a handsome man, with blonde hair and the bluest eyes Ariana had ever seen.
"Hey," he said simply, looking her up and down, smirking. He leaned up against the doorframe, his hand hanging limp over his head. Ariana did not like it one bit. She glared, but this did nothing to make him back off. She was intimidated by his intense gaze and glinting lip ring. He really was a cute guy, but he was just too much for Ariana to handle.
She pushed past him and trudged over to the only open bed, dumping her bag onto it.
This was going to be a long year.
