Chapter 62 // New Year's
•Cassidy
A silver dress that shimmered like a disco ball was clinging to my body, hugging the slight curves that I wished to accentuate. My feet were squished into a pair of black heels that I'd probably be ditching later. I kept my phone handy since I was still awaiting my results from the doctor's, but I wasn't going to let the anticipation of the news stop me from having a good New Year's Eve.
Calum was on his way over to pick me up so we could arrive to the party at Michael's house together. Even though he has been slightly obsessed with spending every chance he got with me, after our ice cream date with Luke we really haven't seen each other that much. I was spending a lot of time with my family and my new nephew and catching up with some people in Australia, and Calum has been hanging with the band again and had went on a road-trip with his old friends from school. I admit that I did miss him during all of this, but it was good for us to hang out with some other people as well.
"Cassie?" My father called as he peaked out the curtain of the front window. "Calum's here!"
I strolled over to the front door where Calum was now standing. His eyes locked onto me immediately, scanning over my body with a look of lust. Calum was dressed in his usual black skinny jeans, along with a black tank top that hung perfectly off of his broad shoulder and cut down on the sides, revealing his toned abs and tanned skin. I smiled at him, and he returned the expression.
"You kids be safe tonight, okay? I know it's legal for you to drink but that doesn't mean you have to. If you do, make sure you don't have too much, and call me if you need anything at all, alright?" My dad rambled off, insinuating with his worried conversation how much he cared about our well being.
"Okay, Dad. We're probably going to sleepover at Michael's so you don't have to worry about us driving. Have a great New Year's!" I told him happily. I knew I wouldn't be drinking tonight just in case I actually was pregnant, but I still wanted to sleepover to make it more fun.
My father placed his hand on Calum's shoulder. "Take care of my daughter, okay Cal?"
Calum smiled down at me. "Of course, Mr. Gold. I always will."
I couldn't help but grin again. His words were so casual, yet I knew there was an underlying deeper meaning behind them. My heart wanted to burst from the amount of love he always managed to overwhelm me with.
I followed Calum out of my house and into the passenger side of his car. As soon as we he had slammed his door shut, his palms immediately reached out to cup my cheeks and he collided our lips together. "I've missed you so much," He mumbled in between kisses.
"I missed you too," I replied, recoiling back into my seat so I could properly buckle up. Calum ignited the engine and started to drive down the newly paved road, keeping one hand on the steering wheel and intertwining his fingers with mine with his other hand.
My thumb traced along the top of his hand, admiring how large they are and the veins that protruded out of his skin slightly. It amazes me that this palm that I can hold right now in such an innocent manner is the same hand that can touch my entire body, practically making my skin set on fire from his tender touch.
"Are you excited for tonight?" Calum asked, his brown eyes flickering from the winding road in front of us and back to me.
I placed his palm back onto my bare leg, letting his fingers rest on my inner thigh. He smirked slightly, running his dry hands over my leg. "Yeah, I am. I haven't been to a party in awhile. And I can't wait to hear what you say when you're completely wasted."
"Hey," He whined, his jaw clenching together tightly. "I don't always say embarrassing things!"
I chuckled. "Yeah, okay," I responded sarcastically. "Should I go find all of those times you drunk texted when we were broken up?"
Calum lifted my hand up again, bringing the back of my palm up to his lips like he always did, letting them graze against my skin before giving it a chaste kiss. "Babe, you should feel honored by that. Even my unconscious mind is always thinking about you."
I raised my eyebrows. He did make a valid point. "I love you."
Calum's head swiveled over to look at me, a bright smile overtaking all of his features as if me saying this to him so randomly had made his entire day. "Cass, that was so cute.
"You're so cute," I shot back, leaning over the compartment in between the front seats so I could get closer to him. I placed my lips onto his long neck, letting my tongue glide against his warm skin. I sucked slightly as I pressed kisses onto the entire surface, making a deep moan escape his lips.
He giggled as I moved my lips down further, approaching his collarbone. He tried to wiggle away from me, but I was so entranced by how hot he looked that I wanted to kiss him all over. "Baby, that tickles," He confessed, still giggling.
I confidently slid my hand down his body until I reached his crotch, palming him through his jeans. Calum's eyes widened and he tried to nudge me off of him while still grasping onto the steering wheel. "Cass," He whined, dragging out my name. "Not now, baby. Not now."
I pouted, resting my chin onto his shoulder. I kissed onto the top of his sharp cheekbones, right where the light would reflect off of them. I kept my hand on his crotch, still gently moving it. "Come on, Cal. I never got to give you that road head that I wanted to do when I got my wisdom teeth removed."
Calum gulped. He grasped onto my wrist, physically pulling my hand away and pushed my body off of him once we pulled up to a stop sign. He shot me a quick glare. "Cassidy, if your mouth even moves anywhere close to that region I am bound to crash this car. Can you please stop being so horny and just wait until like after midnight?"
I laughed lightly, feeling my cheeks flush with a shade of pink from being rejected. "Okay," I murmured. "I'm sorry, you just look really hot today."
Calum's goofy grin reappeared onto his face that was previously plastered with that intimidating expression. He raised his eyebrows at me. "Oh yeah?" He asked in amusement. "Well you look hot everyday, Cass. Honestly. I'm so lucky."
I rolled my eyes at him, causing him to scoff. He pulled down the street where I'm assuming Michael lived since I could see all of the cars lined up on the road there. "I'm being serious! You're so beautiful. And you have a beautiful personality too. I guarantee when we go to this party every single guy there is going to be so jealous that they don't have a girl like you by their side."
I smiled, now feeling my cheeks blush from how overly sweet he was being. I couldn't ask for a better boy to be in love with. Not only was he the biggest goofball on the planet that had the ability of making me laugh no matter what the circumstances, he also showered me with so much love. "You're too sweet to me, Cal. I'm even luckier to be in love with you."
"True. If I was a girl I would totally date me," Calum teased, parking his car in Michael's driveway as opposed to on the street where everyone else left their cars. He twisted the keys out of the car and gripped onto a jacket before filing out of his vehicle, waiting for me to come out on the passenger side.
Michael opened the front door, his jaw dropping at the sight of us. He let out a little squeal. "My favorite couple! Look at you guys! You're so cute together, you know that? I just want to cuddle you guys forever," Michael gushed, wrapping his arms around the two of us in a group hug, nuzzling his soft cheeks against my face.
"You're drunk, Mike," Calum stated, pushing him off of him. He chuckled a little bit at his band-mate's level of intoxication.
Michael lifted the condensation-ridden bottle that he has been gripping onto back up to his lips, taking another swig. He laughed afterwards, and I could nearly the smell the liquor on his breath with each chuckle. "Yeah I am. It's New Year's! We're supposed to be drunk. Go ahead and get a drink off the table, guys."
I wanted to stay and talk to Michael more, because I always found people in their drunken state to be entirely amusing, but Calum grasped my wrist instead, tugging me off towards his kitchen. The music blaring from the speakers grew louder as we travelled further into the house. Calum had to bring his mouth to my ear in order for me to be able to hear him. "You're not going to drink, right? I mean, just in case?"
I tilted my head upwards to kiss his cheek to thank him for his concern. "Of course I won't be drinking."
"My girl is so smart," Calum declared with so much pride. He slipped the jacket that he was carrying over his body before weaving us through the crowd of unfamiliar people and towards the table full of booze. Calum cracked open a can and took a big gulp. "Too bad I'm dumb and I'm going to get hammered tonight."
My mouth twitched up into a small smile. I wasn't going to stop him from partying tonight, I just hope he wouldn't be getting too out of hand. He never drinks enough water to stop himself from getting a hangover. "Just, um, be safe. Okay?"
Calum quickly pecked my lips. "Don't worry, Cass. I'm a champ."
"Yeah, sure," I mumbled in complete sarcasm, heading towards the sliding glass door that lead to outside. Even more people seemed to be out there dancing around, and I wanted to scope it out. "I'm going to go outside."
Calum sped up to match my pace. "Wait, let me come with you."
It was easy to spot Ashton and Luke due to Luke's height and the circle of people crowding around the outgoing Ashton. I gravitated towards them, breathing in the aroma of alcohol and freshly cut grass that smothered the air outside.
"Cassie!" Ashton yelled once he noticed us walking towards him. He broke past the people surrounding him to scoop me up into his arms.
"Hi, Ash," I greeted with a giggle.
Calum clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth in annoyance when Ashton said nothing to him. "Hey, I'm here too, you know."
Ashton punched his arm gently. "Shut up, I just saw you yesterday. How is my little Cassidy?"
I felt a breeze from being outdoors at night time tickle the tops of my skin. I shivered involuntarily, crossing my arms over my chest. "Well right now I'm pretty cold."
I glimpsed up at Calum, wondering if he would be kind enough to give me his jacket. Instead he just shook his head at me. "Maybe you should have worn a coat then?" He replied in his usual sassy manner.
Ashton rolled his eyes at his bandmate, shrugging his black denim jacket off of his shoulders. "Here, you can have mine," He insisted, about to drape the lightweight coat over me until Calum stopped him.
"No! She can have mine. Sorry, babe," Calum murmured, letting his jealousy creep back over him. He took the jacket from his car off of his toned body and handed it to me, letting my petite frame drown in the excess fabric. Calum smiled at the sight.
Ashton clapped his hands together after he had put his coat back on. "Well, Luke and I were about to play some beer pong. Do you two want to try and beat us?"
I grinned. I was always up for competition. "Dude, we're totally going to kick your asses," I stated , making Ashton's bright smile reappear from my enthusiasm. "I'm not drinking tonight though. But I'll still play."
Ashton's untamed eyebrows furred together in confusion. "Why not? I thought the band was supposed to sleep over? You're included with the band, Cass."
"No, I know. But my brother just had a baby and there were a lot of problems so I just want to be prepared in case they need me. I might have to drive so I can't be drunk, just in case," I lied, using my improv skills yet again. I glimpsed up at Calum as we strolled towards the ping pong table, and his jaw returned back to its clenched position.
"Oh okay. Well, Cal you'll just have to drink for Cassie then," He declared, patting Calum's back.
Luke made his way over to the ping pong table, his eyes widening when I picked up the wooden paddle. "You're playing?" He questioned.
"I'm drinking for her," Calum announced, his eyes sternly meeting Luke's to warn him not to mention anything. Luke nodded his head as if he understood the message Calum was sending him.
"Yeah, Cass might have to drive later," Ashton added to explain to Luke, even though Luke was already very aware of the real reason why I wasn't drinking. This caused his pink lips to curve into a proud smirk due to his knowledge, but he tried to stop his expression from being too obvious. "You guys can go first."
I nodded. I picked up one of the ping pong balls, holding it firmly between my thumb and my pointer finger. I lined up my elbow straighter, trying to build up the perfect shot. "Don't miss, Cass," Luke shouted from the other end of the table, purposely trying to mess me up. I launched the ball into the air, and it somehow managed to land into one of the red, plastic cups and make some beer splash up.
"Dude, I didn't know you were good at this?" Calum said with surprise, his eyebrows raised upwards as he smiled down at him. "Just keep it up, okay?"
Ashton finished drinking the cup that my ball had landed into, placing the nearly empty cup off to the side. He twisted his head from side to side crack his neck before picking up another ping pong ball. "Alright, alright. That was impressive, Cass. But it's always easy in the beginning, babe."
I shook my head at him, watching his ball soar through the air and just barely miss one of the cups. I gave Calum a high-five as our lead continued.
I placed my palm on Calum's shoulder, massaging his muscles gently. "Come on, Cal. You can do this," I coached. He shrugged me off of him and then threw the tiny ball, and luckily it landed inside yet another cup, making the two of us celebrate again.
Luke, visibly frustrated after downing the cup, slammed his fist onto the table tennis table. "This is ridiculous. I should have picked Calum as my partner," He mumbled, situating the ball between his thumb and pointer finger.
He flicked it upwards and it rolled around the rim of the red plastic cup before sinking into it. Calum raised his eyes at me in a warning manner before lifting the cup up to his lips to gulp down the alcohol.
I felt the pressure to make another shot even more now that Luke had made the shot, and that a crowd of people were now watching the game. I didn't know who any of them were, so I'm not sure if they are Michael's old friends from school or if they are just people who are watching us because we're famous.
Unfortunately, I completely missed the next throw. It wasn't even close. My cheeks started burning up, especially when Luke and Ashton laughed at how terrible it was and when Calum threw his hands up in the air in frustration. "Cassidy! What happened to being good at this?" He shouted, making my shoulders slump down.
"Sorry! I don't know what happened," I admitted, running a hand through my hair.
Calum slung his arm around my shoulder, pulling the side of my forehead close to him so he could plant a kiss on my temple. "It's okay, Cass. I'm only messing with you," He assured me, giggling softly at how disappointed I was for missing my shot. "Just make sure we don't lose."
The game continued on and more people gathered around us and more drinks were being gulped down in each round. It had to be almost midnight by now, but everyone seemed to be too consumed in this battle.
I felt my phone start to vibrate, which naturally confused me as to who could possibly be calling me at this hour. I glimpsed down at the screen, my eyes nearly bugging out of my head as I recognized the number. It was the doctor's.
"I have to take this," I told Calum quietly, showing Calum the caller-id. He nodded cautiously, doing an awful job at hiding his nerves. I stepped away from the table, making Ashton and Luke start to yell. "I'm sorry! It's um, my brother calling! Something must be wrong."
"Here, uh. Natalie! Natalie, why don't you take Cass's spot for now," Calum suggested to keep his friends from questioning anything and to keep the attention off of me. He kept looking back at me as I ran towards the house, eager to get into a quiet environment.
I barged into the vacant bathroom, locking the door behind me. My heart was pounding heavily against my chest as my shaky hands lifted my phone to my ear, anxious to find out what the doctor was going to say. "He-Hello?" I stuttered.
"Hello Miss Gold. I'm sorry to call you at such a bad time. I hope we aren't interrupting anything. But due to your status, we have you on a special priorty list to let you know things as soon as we find them out, which just so happened to be on New Year's Eve, a few minutes before midnight. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience," The woman spoke softly and formally.
My breathing became heavy. I brought my fingers up to my lips, chewing on my nails rapidly as if it could distract me. "It's alright. Does this mean you know my results?"
"Yes, dear," She responded in a perfectly calm tone. She breathed in a deep inhale before letting out her deep breath that I could hear, only adding to my anticipation. "Miss Gold, you are not pregnant. The morning after pill was effective."
I nearly dropped the phone out of my hands.
I wasn't entirely sure how to respond. I was instantly relieved that I wouldn't have to worry about being a mother or my life changing or having to take care of an infant. It was a miracle that I wasn't going to be a mum anytime soon. But I was strangely a little bummed that I wasn't pregnant with Calum's baby.
"Okay. That's great to hear. Thank you," I murmured before hanging up.
I let out a heavy sigh, approaching Michael's sink. I gripped onto the side of the counter, staring deeply at my own reflection in the mirror. I felt myself smile as all of my previous worries melted away. I no longer had to feel so guilty or scared or nervous. I was going to be just fine.
The commotion outside of the bathroom grew louder than before. Shoes clicked against the floors as people started to scurry around. Next, I distinctly heard someone yell, "One minute!"
I soon realized that it was almost midnight, which meant the next year would be starting very soon. I sprinted out of the bathroom, heading right towards the ping pong table where Calum was still standing. Natalie, I think, was right in front of him, probably thinking about how she was going to get lucky and get to have Calum as her New Year's kiss. But then he caught sight of me and instantly shooed her away.
"Calum!" I screamed as I ran up to him, placing my hands on his forearms. His eyes scanned my face while I panted for breath, gripping onto him for balance. "Calum, I'm not pregnant."
"You're not?" He repeated, his eyebrows knitting together as a puzzled expression etched across his features.
"No," I said quickly, as the countdown towards zero grew louder.
"Well that's great! We weren't ready to be parents," Calum stated, making me nod my head in agreement. "We can always try again though, baby," He added seductively, staring down at me in lust.
Calum lifted me up, setting my butt down onto the beer pong table we were just playing at a few minutes ago. He spread my legs apart so he could stand in between them, and I slyly locked my legs behind his waist, bringing our bodies even closer together.
"Eight, seven, six...," The party-goers chanted.
Calum grinned down at me, his head moving closer and closer to my own as his palms settled onto my hips. "I promise I'm going to spend all of 2016 with you," He whispered, his lips hovering over my own.
"Three, two, one!"
"Happy New Year's, Cassidy," Calum mumbled, instantly pulling my body tighter as he kissed me with more passion than passion fruit itself.
I might not be pregnant. And I might not know what is going to come next for Calum and I. But I do know that if I spent this upcoming year with moments as incredible as this one, I was going to have the best year I have ever endured.
