"I warned you if you want to study dance I will not support you financially!"
"But Appa..."
My mother kicked me on my foot under the table.
"Do we have to talk about this now? She keeps ruining our evenings together." my sister was poking at her food and was looking at me like she was about to kill me with her chopsticks.
"Shut up Yeonji!" I muttered softly.
"We'll talk about this later. Please... we only have this one day a week where we can have dinner together!" my mother said.
I sighed and leaned back and put my chopsticks aside.
"Tomorrow is the entrance exam. I plan to go!"
"You had already signed up there without our consent?"
My mother looked at me frowning.
"Yes Eomma!" I lowered my gaze.
"Min Jani!" my mother looked at me disappointedly. "You're overriding your father's wishes!"
"Do my wishes not count?" I got up and was leaving the weekly family dinner.
" Sit down! We are not finished yet." my father raised his voice.
"Appa!"
"Sit down!" he didn't dignify me with a glance.
"No Appa! This is my Life and i'll do what i wanna want to do!"
"Min Jani! Don't try my patience!" Now my father looked at me.
His brow furrowed...
"The daughter of the vice mayor is not going to be a hiphop dancer!"
"Choreography," I corrected him.
"I invested so much money in your study of politics for nothing?"
I could have started crying.
Me the eldest daughter of the vice mayor, was a disgrace. There was never a moment in my life when I was happy because I wanted to be.
My father's quest for power stuck to me.
I gasped a few times to say something, but the look on my father's face was intimidating.
I turned and went upstairs to my room.
I could hear my father yelling after me, but I didn't cared at tjis moment.
I was so angry and so sad at the same time.
At the age of 24, I was still attached to my parents.
Jani do not do this, Jani do not do that...
I was tired of it. ..
I changed my clothes and was about to leave when my sister knocked on my door.
"Unnie?" she poked her head into my room.
"What?"
Yeonji was my parents' dream child. She enjoyed her freedoms and my father's favoritism.
Although I am often jealous of her, I still loved her very much.
"I'm sorry. I..I should have been on your side!"
"No more pistachio ice cream for you!" I winked at her and smiled.
"You're not mad at me?"
I shook my head in denial and she let out a sigh of relief.
"Oh gosh , thanks because I really need to tell you something!"
She hopped on my bed and smiled.
"Please don't tell Appa and Eomma. Promise me."
I sat down next to her and nodded.
"Okay..!"
" A few weeks ago I met this guy at the club!"
"Wait a minute...! You were in a club!"
"Shhhhh....!" she covered my mouth with her hand as if I had said something forbidden.
" i like him Jani...a lot..."
"First...How old is he?"
"He's 28 and...and I'm thinking about...!"
"Oh gosh please please don't say it!"
"I want..well..my first time ....with him.."
"I'm going to puke!"
I took a deep breath ...
"Min Yeonji, are you crazy?
You are 19 and he he..
.is a fcuking adult...!"
"I shouldn't have told you that!" my little sister got up and was about to leave.
"Girl... he's 28 ....!"
" So what!" she rolled her eyes annoyed.
"I don't want to play the moralizer but.... !" i sighed...
"The first time with a boy should be a memorable experience and not a quick number with some random guy."
"You don't even know him!" Yeonji was close to tears, I could see that.
"Yeah.... Who is this guy anyway?"
Yeonji turned from me and walked towards the door.
"You don't need to know anymore. It's my decision!"
"Yeonji!" i stopped her.
She turned to me and I could see how disappointed she was.
My sister tried to entrust me with something where she thought she would get my support. And what did I do?
I acted like our parents.
"Unnie! You were 17 and the guy was 23."
"And it was a total bust. It was a disappointment and I got dumped by the guy afterwards. So you understand why I'm reacting that way!"
"That doesn't mean it will happen to me the same way!"
"And if it does? What then?"
"But I love him!"
"Is it mutual? Has he told you that he loves you?"
"He doesn't have to... I....I just know!"
She turnd and slammed the door behind her as she left my room.
I leaned my head back and took a deep breath.
"Why is everything going wrong!"
I just wanted to get out to clear my head.
I grabbed my car keys and drove to Hongdae.
Whenever I was stressed or just wanted to have some fun, Hongdae was my destination.
The urban art and indie music culture, local stores, clubs and entertainment were right up my alley.
From every corner came various sounds, clattering plates of street food carts, music from the small boxes of street dancers and the people who made this part of Seoul so alive.
I bought some Kimbap and a small bottle of Milkis and sat down on a bench near some street dancers.
I loved watching the young dancers, learning new techniques and later trying to imitate them at home.
Dancing was all I wanted. It was my passion and tomorrow I would prove it to everyone.
My father and the rest of the world.
But then, the monent , while I was calmly watching the people, I saw him for the first time.
He stared at me...right into my soul. Sucked me with his gaze.
That guy...
...who will drive me out of my mind...
That guy....
...who's going to cause me even more problems.
I couldn't see his face but I could never forget those eyes even if he was standing a few meters from me.
"Jani!"... I heard someone call my name.
When I turned around I saw Tina.
"I knew I'd find you here!"
Tina was a fellow student at the university my father put me in and a really good friend of mine.
"Hi!" I smiled and looked back at the guy who was staring at me....
But nothing to see he was gone.
"Are you okay?" Tina sat down next to me.
"Um..yeah..yeah!"
"And why do you look so confused?"
"Nothing..nothing..it's just...!"
"I was at your house and Yeonji told me you had stress with your father?"
I sighed ....
"I told him that I was going to the entrance exam and my parents were anything but enthusiastic. "
"You're really going through with this?"
I nodded...
"More than anything Tina!"
"How about a little distraction!" Tina lightly tucked me into my side and grinned.
