Gianna Vannucci was born in Siena, Tuscany, Italy. She moved to Florence after leaving her parents' home to become independent from her family. Still not satisfied and had a heart to travel, she immigrated to New York, New York. While working at a café to pay for college, she befriended a regular customer, John Sprouse. She later learned he was a stockbroker and a fairly wealthy man. He took a liking to her and after briefly dating, he proposed. Knowing if she married him she'd never have to worry about money again, Gianna accepted.

As most marriages for money often end up, the couple became fairly unhappy after several years together. The birth of their first child Isabelle was a remedy for a time, but the death of their infant son Anthony due to congenital heart disease made a rift between the two that would never be mended. Their daughter grew up seeing their dysfunctional relationship and never truly believed in the institution of marriage. She began drinking at sixteen and would go to rehab at eighteen before entering college.

Manuel and Gloria Villafuerte both grew up in the Pampanga province of the Philippines and were married at age 19. Hoping to start a life in the United States, Manuel immigrated to Coos Bay, Oregon and became a fisherman. Once he had just enough money, he sent for Gloria. The two scrapped by in the fishing community for several years, changing there last names to 'Firman' after repeated discrimination. Due to this, their only child David Theo was given a very American name.

When their son was fourteen, Manuel died in boating accident amidst a storm on the Pacific Ocean. David started taking as many jobs as he could in high school to support his hardworking widowed mother. By the time he was seventeen, Gloria fell severely ill. She passed on several months before her son would graduate. David left Coos Bay to join the Marines in June of that year, not wanting to stay in his hometown any longer.

Isabelle Sprouse frequently visited her mother's homeland in college. While studying for a degree in finance at George Washington University, she attended a CIA information session. Deducing a career in intelligence work would be far more adventurous, she submitted a resume. After completing several rigorous assessments and attaining her bachelor's, she officially was recruited by the agency.

In the summer of 1983, Isabelle met Matthias Benton. While at first the relationship was purely 'no strings attached', she became pregnant with twins. Matthias proposed, to which she accepted because she thought she had no other choice. In May of the following year, Zerina and Xander Sprouse were born. It soon became apparent Xander had the same heart defect that killed her younger brother. Her son died during a procedure to fix his cardiovascular vessels. Isabelle didn't marry Benton, knowing what the death of a child could do to a couple. She would have another daughter in 1987, Nya Sprouse, after having an affair with married CIA agent Luke Steinfeld. Sprouse also had multiple partners to which she had no children with.

David Firman joined the Marine Corps straight out of high school. He progessed through basic training with flying colors, which attracted SHIELD's attention. At nineteen, he joined the organization and made it through SHIELD's Academy of Operations. He worked primarily as a field specialist agent and preferred to execute missions on his own. He ended up being primarily stationed at a facility in Florence, Italy.

The two crossed paths when Isabelle took a three week leave from work to visit family in Italy. After meeting in a bar in 1989, the two repeatedly saw each other during the length of Sprouse's stay. Neither really knew too much about the other and agreed not to speak again when she left for the United States. Nine months later at Seattle Grace Hospital in Washington, Sienna Isabelle Firman was born.

While most of Sienna's early life is classified by order of SHIELD, it is clear her father gained full custody of her. She would spend the first few years of her life growing up in Italy before her father got a new commission back in the States. Currently, she is a citizen of both countries.
