Chapter 17

A heavy and unwavering knock was at my door. He didn't stop after a few like a normal person. I'm going to kill him! I flung the door open. Luke grinned at my door, I gave him a once over, he had to be taken down a peg.
"You look stupid."
"You look stupid!" He retorted like a child, I couldn't help but smirk. Mason opened his door and walked out. "Now you look stupid." Luke and I giggled. He looked like a mix between a frat boy and a business man. It was awful.
"What in god's green earth are you wearing?"
"You don't like my outfit?" Mason frowned, looking over himself.
"No." Luke and I said together, sharing a smile.
"Oh, I forgot!" Luke pulls a plastic containers from a local grocery store, from behind his back. "You've earned it!" Inside was one of their famous brownies, that had a bite out of it.
"Did you eat some of it?" His cheeks turned a light pink.
"I took a bite, I had to make sure it wasn't poisoned." I hummed in agreement.
"Should I really go change?" Mason whined.
"Yes." Luke and I said together again.

Reluctantly on my part and with our backs against the wall, Luke and I ate the brownie he bought me. Mason was taking longer than I would to pick a new outfit and change. I was looking at my own jeans and shirt.
"Do I really look stupid?" I asked Luke.
"No. You said I looked stupid, so I said it back. Do I look stupid?" I chuckled as Luke re-examined himself.
"No, I just said that to annoy you for making me go tonight." He kicked his feet back and forth with a shadow of a smile on his lips. "I like this shirt." My fingers played with the sleeve of his button down. Goosebumps lingered on his arm under my fingers.
"Thanks." The door flung opens and Mason strut out, proud of his new outfit. I grimaced.
"Some how, I think that's worse." He looked down at his black running shoes, red jeans and white t-shirt that looked like it had been painted on. If you looked hard enough you could see the outline of his nipples.
"Dude, I can see your nipples!" Point made. Mason frowned.
"Dear lord." I climbed to my feet. "Okay, move over, I will get you something un-atrocious!"

Handing Mason a black button down to throw over his shirt and dark washed jeans I left the dorm. Luke was still on the floor and playing on his phone. When the door closed behind me, he looked up.
"What would we do without you?" He grinned.
"Make bad fashion and life decisions." Putting my back on the wall, I slid down to sit next to him again.
"Take a selfie with me." Luke held up his phone, camera picking up both of us. I sucked in my cheeks, making a fish face. He chuckled and scrunched his nose and made a kissy face. We laughed at the faces we made.

Mason finally came out with restyled hair and the outfit I handed him. He actually look pretty good. It was times like these I could see why all the girls were crazy about him.
"I'm ready!" He beamed proudly.
"Thank god." Luke grumbled standing up, then stuck his hand out to help me.

Sometimes, I forgot who these two were, I sometimes forget what it was like on the outside looking in. They were two of the most popular guys, they were rich and attractive. These guys were the type of guys that girls fawned over, damn near threw themselves at them. Sometimes, I forget because of how little they actually are all of that. They don't swim in women every night nor do they go out an party their money away. They mostly just hang out and beat up each other. You know, meathead things. Sometimes, I forget I get to see behind the curtain that most people don't even know is there.

We headed toward the staircase as I played with my keys in hand, mulling over my thoughts. It was weird that I always liked to take the stairs and it never seemed to bother the boys. They always just followed in suit. If they are alone, they take the elevator but if I'm with, they don't second guess about taking the stairs, nor do they ask about it. Weird.

Mason sat in the back because Luke called shotgun before we even left the building. Sometimes it was like hauling around two six year olds. Annoyingly enough to me, Luke was flipping through the radio stations.
"Please find something." I finally protested. His cheeks speckled with pink.
"Sorry." Finally, he went back to a station we had flipped over three times. Men.

The party was off campus but not far. A group of students had rented it out for the pure convenience of close to campus and parties. Once again, men. A heavy sent of cigarettes and marijuana peppered the outside air. If you breathed too deep it was nauseating.
"Okay, bye." Mason made a break for it, then stoped. "Wait, how will I find you?"
"I'll wear a neon green sign that says 'Miley' on it." I stared at him blankly.
"Or you can text or call us, Mas." Luke helped the elevator hit the top floor.
"Ah, right. Ha, ha!" I slightly shook my head, stunned by him.
"Sometimes I wish his IQ matched his looks rating." I mumbled more to myself than to Luke.
"Do I?" He bumped his shoulder into mine.
"No, you're much smarter than your looks and you're not the brightest bulb in the box either." I climbed the stairs ahead of him as he chuckled.

The inside smelled strong of booze, sweet and perfume. It was an odd combination. A group in the corner cheered when Luke walked in and immediately flagged him over. He glanced at me, I waved him on and quickly disappeared into the crowd. I was praying for anyone I knew, anyone.
"Hey Miles!" I turned to Parker, the most known pot dealer on campus.
"Hey."
"Nice of you to join the party, want one?" He held up a pre rolled joint.
"No thanks, I'm good." He still smiled despite my rejection.
"Alright, see you around. You know where to find me if you change your mind." I nodded and pushed further on.

Finally, I made it to the kitchen through the sea of people. Grabbing an unopened beer from the counter, I turned around and scanned the crowd. I felt so out of my element. Someone pressed against me, lightly grabbing my arm. I rolled my eyes and turned around expecting to see Luke. That's not who it was.
"Hey Miley." I swallowed hard when he said my name.
"Trent," I countered. "what do owe the misery?" His eyes turned dark for a moment. Where was Luke when I needed him?
"Miley, I'm offended you think so low of me."
"I'm appalled you'd think I'd have a different opinion of you." He leaned forward, I took a step back.
"I thought that's where we'd kiss. Isn't that how it always works in the movies?"
"This isn't the movies. I will deck you, back off."
"Where's your bodyguard?" He scanned around for who I assumed was Luke.
"I don't need one. I can handle myself." My pulse had risen a beat higher with every sentence he said. "Go find a different girl to bother, she will probably enjoy your company opposed to me, who doesn't." Trent rolled his eyes and pushed past me. Sighing, I turned to follow where he stormed off to. Once he was out of sight I let myself scan the crowd again.

In one of my many crowd scopes, I locked eyes with Liz. She pushed her way through to get to me.
"You're here!"
"The boys made me come." She chuckled.
"Come on." She pulled me through the sea to her small group of friends. Ellie was close by, when she saw me, she smile a little. Mason wasn't far from her, dancing and acting a fool. Ellie didn't seem to notice or if she did, she didn't mind. "You didn't tell me you were coming tonight." She yelled over the music.
"I didn't know I was coming." I yelled back.
"Luke?"
"Good guess. I'm babysitting him and Mason tonight." She threw her head back in laughter.
"Good luck." I rolled my eyes, even she knew the chaos those two could be.

A little while later, after a lot of awkward dancing from me, Liz scooped my arm in hers.
"I gotta pee." Now that she mentioned it, so did I.

We weaved our way all sorts of people. The bathroom had a short line, but still a line. I took in her outfit. Her dress was lose fitting and covered in different types of flowers. She looked beautiful as always. She was the type of girl you wanted to hate, but you couldn't. Liz was a great friend, beautiful and humble. She was the female version of Luke. No wonder they dated.

When it was finally her turn to use the bathroom, she pulled me along with her. I didn't know this was a group effort. Amy was like that too. She used the bathroom first. I stared at myself in the mirror.
"Guess who tried to make a move on me tonight."
"Luke?" She almost squealed.
"What? No. Trent."
"Oh, ew." She flushed the toilet then was next to me washing her hands.
"Tell me about it, he tried to kiss me."
"Double ew!" I laughed and sat down on the toilet.

After I fished, we left the bathroom and made a side stop at the kitchen for another drink. I grabbed my final beer for the night. I had been babysitting each one tonight. This was only my third one and I'm sure the boys had my drinks squared by now with hard liquor.

Luke: Where R U?

Me: With Liz.

Luke: Wher R U?

Me: By the rooms at the front of the house.

Luke: K

After a few minutes, Luke had pushed his was to find us. His cheeks were flushed with alcohol.
"How's that not drinking working out for you?"
"Not great." He slurred. I hummed in agreement. "I'm done. I pwomise." He held out his pinky. Rolling my eyes, I linked my pinky with his.
"Right." I grumbled. Liz laughed.
"Hi Liz."
"Hi Luke." She smiled brightly at him. She was three sheet to the wind too. My phone buzzed in my back pocket. I was almost certain that was Thing 2.

Mason: I misd ypu

Me: Uh?

Mason: dont you misss mr?

Me: Not particularly.

Mason: Bug word

Mason: were are you?

Me: Turn around....

Mason: I SEEE YO

Mason was by far, worse than Luke. Ellie was close on his tail. Liz was giggling manically at my side.
"This is too good." She managed to get out.
"Hi." Mason grinned. His cheeks were bright red.
"Can we leave now?" Ellie teetered at his side. She seemed more sober than he was. I looked at Luke, he was already staring at me with glassy eyes.
"Yeah, come on." I turned back to Liz. She smirked at me.
"Night Miles. Call you tomorrow." I waved.

Once I made sure everyone was good in their seats in got in. The car shook for a moment then came to life. Ellie had never seen my car before but I hopefully she'd be too drunk to remember it.
"Can we get pizza?" Mason asked with his eyes closed.
"Ooo, pizza." Luke moaned, his head rested on the window next to him.
"I like pizza." Ellie chimed in as if it added to my decision.
"And who's paying?" Mason rose his hand. "Alright, pizza on Mason." The car gave a zombie like cheer.

I pulled into the closet pizza place that was open.
"Stay here." I looked around at all of them. They all seemed to be on the verge of sleep. "Mason, wallet." I held out my hand.
"It's in my front pocket." He mumbled.
"I need it." He groaned in response.
"I got it." Ellie started to dig in his pockets. I felt uncomfortable watching so I turned to Luke. His eyes were fixated on the shop sign.
"Can I come?" He whispered to me.
"No."
"Please!" He leaned on the center console so our faces were only a few inches apart. I could smell the liquor on his breath.
"No, Luke."
"But Miley!" He whined.
"Fine!" Ellie slapped the wallet in my hand. "Let's go." I turned to the pair in the back. "Stay put." The both nodded.

Luke was still staggering to the door by the time I got out and opened the door for him. Why I agreed is beyond me. Part of me also knew he'd follow regardless.
"Are you mad at me for drinking he asked as we reached the counter."
"No, just disappointed." I said without thought and looked at the man behind the counter. I shouldn't say man, he was only a little older than Luke and I.
"Oh my god, she's disappointed with me." Luke bent down to put his head on the counter and covered with his arms.
"I'll deal with that in a second." The guy looked concerned at Luke. "Long night." He nodded in understanding.
"What can I get you?"
"One cheese and one pepperoni."
"Size?"
"Medium."
"Okay, total is $15.84." I handed him one of Masons many credit cards. It was the card I had seen him use the most.

Luke and I sat in the chairs in the waiting room. We could see the counter, the guy kept glancing at us.
"Are you really disappointed in me?" I sighed.
"No, Luke. It was sarcasm, I'm sorry." He let out a shaky sigh. I forgot how fragile people can be when drunk.
"Okay." He blinked a few times. "I'm tired." Then he slumped down and put his head on my shoulder.

Not once in my life did I think I would be sitting in a empty pizza parlor with the most popular guy in school. Not only that did I think he would be drunk with his head on my shoulder and I'd be stone cold sober and okay with it. I turned to look at his face. Luke's cheeks were still a blush color from all the alcohol but his eyes were closed and his lips were pursed. Sighing, I laid my head on top of his. Never did I think this could or would happen, but as reality would have it. It did happen, so here we are.
