Chapter 11
The weekend passed quickly and it was back to Monday. Liz and I hung out all weekend. We went bar hopping on Saturday and found a local church on Sunday. Neither of us are really religious but it felt good. It made me feel apart of something.
I was in a pissy mood today. Not only did Ellie make a mess this weekend, she woke me up early with her puking. I was sleep deprived and slightly hung over from how many glasses of the blood of Christ Liz and I had.
Finance class came and went as normal. Class finished quickly and we were dismissed early.
"Let hang out tonight." Luke pushed.
"I don't want to." I said between my teeth.
"Come on, there is something new you should try every week." I slammed my hands down at my side.
"What does it even matter to you?"
"Because it does, now would you just get out of your own head for one second!" Luke huffed in frustration.
"What do you care?" I snapped.
"I just do, okay?" He softened, his eyes almost looked wishful.
"Come on, we aren't even friends, Luke." I scrunched my face a little while his saddened.
"We're not?" His voice was soft.
"No." My voice came out a little breathy.
"But the party?"
"We were two people who went to a party together. Big deal. Mason was there too. We aren't friends."
"Okay that's different." Luke shook his head a little.
"How?"
"Because Mason just wants to sleep with you."
"Okay?"
"He can't do that."
"You don't get to dictate who I do and don't sleep with!" I snapped.
"Miley, that's not what I meant!" He was flustered.
"Then what did you mean?" He opened his mouth but all he could do was stutter over sounds. "Right, nothing Luke." I nodded and walked away. He just made me frustrated.
"Miley!" His voice chased after me. I just waved my hand in dismissal. I wanted to be alone. I headed to the cafe.
I pushed the door open. Liz was sitting at a table alone. I thought I wanted to be alone but I guess I just wanted a friend. I plopped down in the seat ahead of her.
"Hi." She looked up at me surprised.
"Hi." I said softly.
"What's wrong?" I shook my head.
"Want to hang out?" Her face was filled with concern but she didn't push me.
"Sure. What do you want to do?" I shrugged my shoulders. "We can lay in bed and listen to music?" Surprisingly that sounded perfect.
"Okay." She smiled.
Liz and I walked back to her dorm. We talked about topical stuff like classes and how our days were going. I said my day was okay. I didn't feel like going into detail about it. We laid in Liz's bed just staring at the ceiling.
"I heard you and Luke had a fight." I looked at her.
"How did you hear that already? I've been with you since basically it happened." A small smile flicked on her face for a moment.
"Luke." She said softly. I looked back up at the ceiling.
"I don't know if I'd call it a fight."
"What would you call it?" She asked softly.
"A difference in opinion." Liz rolled her head to look at me.
"So a fight." I shrugged my shoulders. "Miley, what are you afraid of?"
"Lots of things." I answered.
"I meant when it comes to Luke."
"Nothing." I wasn't sure that was the truth. I guess maybe I was afraid of being way over my head when it came to being friends with him. We aren't similar much.
"You told him you aren't friends." Wow, word really does travel fast at this school.
"We aren't."
"And we are?" I finally looked over at her.
"Yes." She sighed.
"What makes us different?"
"We are females, we bond quicker." She raised her eyebrows at me. "Plus we kissed." Liz smiled a little.
"So if Luke kissed you, you'd be friends?"
"No, if Luke kissed me I'd be awkward." She sighed a little.
"I just don't understand how we're different." The truth was, they weren't. Luke and Liz both came into my life on complete accident but they both chose to stay. Isn't that something a friend would do? She was looking at me for an answer. Unfortunately for her, I didn't have one.
"I don't know." I finally said.
"Because were not." Liz looked at me. I knew she was right and I hated it. I huffed and looked back to the fan. "You know, I'm sorry wouldn't be too out of line." Liz pushed gently.
"I don't want to talk about this right now." She sighed and laid back next to me.
"I know he'll wait forever, but please don't make him." I drew in a deep breath. Liz's words repeated in my head.
Luke Sands and I were not friends. Mason Heckle and I were not friends. We weren't supposed to be. Mason and Luke were friend with people who had money and liked to party. I was friends with people who went to college for an education and liked to read.
Mason and I were still going to live across the hall from each other. I was still going to see him. Luke and I still had finance together. I was still going to see him. We weren't going to hang out and my dorm door was no longer going to be left unlocked.
Liz and I got dinner on compas. She got a salad with a chocolate milkshake and I got a chicken sandwich with a strawberry milkshake. We asked for two extra glasses so we could mix them together.
"I can't believe I've never done this before, it's good." She sucked her shake down.
"I only mix them on special occasions."
"And whats special about today?" I shrugged my shoulders.
"Call it detoxing."
"You don't mean that." Her voice was low and almost sad.
"No." I said softly. "I'm not sure why else I would have this."
"Sadness." We stared at each other across the table. She was right, I was slightly sad about what happened today. I lost my temper, but was true. Luke, Mason and I aren't friends. We were never supposed to be.
After dinner we both went out separate ways. I wish her dorm wasn't such a far walk but it also gave me time to think. I thought about what Liz said. I was sad; maybe, maybe not. I was excited to have my sanity back. I will admit, I think I'll miss them. But I'm my defense, you always miss things you've gotten used to.
I took the stairs like I always did. Mason was standing in the hall talking to some girl. Of all days and time, why was he in the hall now? I slid behind them and unlocked the door. Just before it close Mason and I made eye contact. There wasn't a trace of smile in his eyes, they felt as cold as I did.
