Bells Ringing

Gadget's Pov:
A soulmate. What's that you ask? A soulmate is someone you are destined to be with. Of course, you can be with them if you want to or not. It's not forced upon you nor are you shamed if you don't accept your soulmate. Love is love, after all. How do you find yours? Oh, they are so many ways that are all very unique. Perhaps, you have a red string attached to your pinky that connects to your soulmate's pinky. Maybe, you have the first word or sentence that they will say to you imprinted on your skin. Or you hear bells ring inside your brain once you meet them. That's what I had at birth and what they told every day growing up from childhood to now. Although, I never believed them nor the legend of a soulmate. "But, Gadget! Mom said you'll find them soon! Just listen closely to your brain when you talk to someone new!" Gears exclaimed, desperately. My younger brother was always enthusiastic about the idea of a soulmate. His way to find his soulmate was by the red string of fate and how he wished the day their strings will connect come soon. He knew about my lack of belief of a soulmate and was disappointed, after all, that's how many people found their one true love. "Mom didn't marry her soulmate, Gears. Father's string wasn't connected to hers when he died and the string was shown." I responded, sighing afterward. I never believed my mother when she said I would find my soulmate by the sounds of a bell ringing. After all, she didn't marry her soulmate so, why should I believe her? She married someone who's string was connected to someone else's. It was proof when my dad's string was still connected to someone else.

"Mom made a decision, Gadget. We can't change it. So, leave it in the past besides father would have wanted you to do the same." Gears spoke, gently as we continued to walk. "And what does father want me to do exactly?" I asked, walking a bit quicker. "To find your soulmate!" Gears exclaimed, once again. I stopped in my tracks and looked down to think. Dad did want me to find my soulmate, why else would he and my mom repeat every day that I'll find mine soon in the future? Why else did he explain what kind of sound I'll head when I meet my soulmate?

"Come on, we'll be late for school," I mumbled, starting to walk. That is until I bumped into someone as soon as I put my foot in front of the other. "Sorry, I didn't mean to!" I exclaimed, backing away slightly. "It's okay, don't worry about it. Though, watch when you're going." The person responded, not turning his back at all. And that's when I heard it. A small chime. A tinker. A vibration that seemed to bounce off every spot of a bell. It rang throughout my head as my eyes widen.

Gears ran up to me and grabbed my arm as we started to run to school. I'm guessing we were going to be late but, my mind didn't focus on that. The bell. It chimed through my head when that person responded. But, there's no way it could be them. Maybe, the bell chiming belonged to something else like an ice cream stand. "Gadget! Snap out of it, we made it to school! We're not going to be late!" Gears exclaimed, snapping his fingers in front of my face. I nodded slowly as my eyes still stared at the floor as we entered the building.

"Gadget, what happened back there?" Gears asked, concerned. "I don't know. I apologized for running into that person and as soon as they responded, it happened." I replied, my mind not wandering even a second from the sound I heard. "What happened?" Gears questioned, now standing in front of me. "A bell, I heard it chime through my head." I replied and he quickly pushed me into a dark hallway. "What! A bell? Didn't mom say that's how you'll meet your soulmate?" Gears asked, excitedly. I nodded quickly as I smiled at his reaction.

"Too bad, we couldn't catch a glimpse of their face. I would've totally helped you two hook up." Gears whined, kicking at the ground. "Yeah, well, who knows. It might just have been an ice cream stand." I responded, shrugging. I turned around the corner to go to my locker until I once again bumped into someone. Is my luck really that bad? "Ah jeez, sorry!" I exclaimed, blushing madly. "It's fine, just-." The person replied until I heard it again. That bell. It chimed once again, sending so much sound to my head.

The person stood before me, his eyes widen too like me. The bell rang once he responded like what happened last time. We're inside school now which means the bell isn't an ice cream stand. It's just them and the bell telling me, that's your soulmate. I could catch a good look at the person before me. A jackal who was taller than me and wore a gray sweater. Sharp boots, blue and yellow eyes, and white hair. "Did you hear that?" The Jackal asked. I slightly gasped, did he hear bells too? "You mean, bells chiming when we responded?" I questioned.

"Yeah, that's it! Oh, uh, my name is Ira. Ira the Jackal and you are?" He asked, slightly nervous. "It's Gadget. Gadget the Wolf. So, I guess we go to the same school and we're now confirmed soulmates." I teased, chuckling in between. "Yeah, right. I'll see you around then since classes are about to start." Ira responded, smiling. "Yeah, I'll see you around too!" I replied, a blush high on my cheeks. "Won't be hard to find you because of the bells and all that! Uh, bye!" He exclaimed, throwing finger guns at me before leaving. I waved and sighed as the blush on my cheeks grew warmer.

"I'm hooking you both up, right now!" Gears exclaimed. I forget he was there.
