Tyler sat up with a gasp, clutching the blanket beneath him. His eyes darted left and right, taking in his surroundings. Where was he?
"Woah man, are you okay?" Wes asked, lowering the cup of soup he had raised to his mouth. Tyler nodded, taking a deep breath.
"Just a rough nap." he ran a hand over his face. Right... They were in a garage.
"Another one of those dreams, huh?" Mackenzie asked from her place next to Wes.
"Yeah... You two talk about anything interesting while I was out?" he asked, serving himself some soup as well. Mackenzie and Wes traded looks before looking down at their cups and clearing their throats.
"Nope." Mackenzie shook her head, shrugging. Her umber hair had fallen from the lazy ponytail she kept it in a few days ago and she'd given up on trying to put it up again, so it framed her face and cast shadows across her caramel skin. Everything about her seemed very warm in the light of the fire- the opposite of how she truly behaved. When the trio had officially become a group and shared their backstories, she had revealed the least. Only that she was a boxer and before the whole apocalypse thing happened she had been awaiting news for a job.
Wes, the guy they had found in the convenience store, was definitely the weakest of the three strength wise, but damn could that kid survive without sleep or nourishment the longest. He was a light skinned Irish-German from Minnesota with freckles and glasses, his blonde hair was on the longer side with faded blue at the ends and was kept in a half pony bun. Wes had been enrolled in a film school at the time of the outbreak (Which explained a lot) and was working on his student thesis project. Being a college student and movie marathoner had trained his body to still be functional for twenty-four hours after only a two minute nap and half of a granola bar- maybe more if he got a shot of gatorade. He said his goal after college was to make a movie that would be referred to as 'epic' and 'classic'.
Tyler sighed, drinking his soup. Though they were very different in personality, they were very close and Mackenzie was quick to accompany Wes if he was straying from the group. Whenever one of them spent time with Tyler, it seemed the other was forcing them to do it. He didn't have a problem with it- in fact, it gave him ample time to think and keep an eye out for his teammates. Of course, it was a bit uncomfortable not being included in their secrets or shared conversation.
"Okay, what's the question for tonight?" he raised his scarred eyebrow. At some point in their time together, they decided on the tradition that every night they survived, they would all answer a question about themselves.
"How old are you?" Wes blurted before Mackenzie could open her mouth.
"Twenty-three." Tyler answered after some thought. He didn't think his birthday had passed yet. Mackenzie held her hand out to Wes, who seemed surprised and a little defiant. He reached into his pocket and dropped a candy bar into the girl's hand. "Wait, did you guys have a bet on how old I was?"
"Kiddo here thought you were over twenty-seven. I said no way." Mackenzie shrugged, ripping open the wrapper.
"Kiddo?" Tyler chuckled. Mackenzie nodded, sighing as she bit into the candy bar.
"I'm going to be thirty soon. And this little man is twenty-two." she ruffled Wes' hair, causing him to grimace in annoyance and swat at her hand halfheartedly. Tyler laughed at the display of affection. He stood up and stretched his arms into the air.
"Alright you're up, Wes." he extended his hand to the blonde who stared up at him with his wide baby blues.
"W-what am I up for?" Wes asked.
"It's your turn to sleep." Tyler tilted his head towards the bedroll. Wes' mouth opened and closed, trying to form words. He looked to Mackenzie who shook her head.
"I'll be fine, I've slept twice as much as you have. You need to rest at some point." she finished off her candy bar and the potential argument simultaneously.
"Okay." Wes sighed, placing his hand in Tyler's, and allowed the larger man to pull him up from the ground. As Wes made his way over to the bedroll, Tyler took his seat next to Mackenzie and prepared himself for a long night of watching the doors and windows.
