Is technology limiting creativity?
"Everything in moderation, including moderation."
Oscar Wilde, an Irish poet.
Technology includes every modern invention which has been created with the help of scientific knowledge. Since the time man has set foot on this planet. It has continuously helped to make its life better. The basic knowledge was perceived by it through the help of sensory organs. It started to observe the world around it and analyzed it with the help of its brain. This observation then turned towards learning. It was through learning that man was able to unlock many mysteries of this world. With immense effort, meticulous research, infinite experimentation and determination a simple cave man made a lot of progress. It has made so much progress that now it is flying high in sky, diving deep in oceans and reaching out to other stars and planets. It was all made possible because of brain.
Technology is limiting creativity. I don't completely agree to this fact. It is true to some extent but not completely. If technology is the expression of 21st century then in my opinion creativity was its master plan like a blue print on which all the foundation lies. Creativity is controlled by our brain. Brain is the ultimate control center of our brain which controls thinking, learning, emotions and lot of other body functions are also performed by it. Our brain is divided into two major parts which are known in scientific terms as hemisphere. The left hemisphere controls analytical thinking while right hemisphere controls creativity and imagination. Now the question arises what is creativity. Creativity as evident from the name which means to create something preferably new. Creativity is the ability to create something new with the help of power of imagination utilizing the analytical side of brain as well. It does not mean to create something out of the box. It means to create something new with already available resources using your own magic. This was the exact definition of creativity which was given to me by my mentors when I started writing.
The world we live in is a miracle of its own kind filled with countless possibilities ready to be explored. The power of creativity is cognitive yet alluringly magnificent that it is needed in every walk of life. The only need is that to tap that power and use this noble power in rightful way. Once an individual tapes this power it opens the doors to further realities of life. For me as a writer, creativity depends upon a lot of factors. Creativity depends on your power to understand and appreciate the little things in life. You should have that emphatic heart and keen observation. Otherwise you stand no better than buffaloes as mentioned by famous poet William Wordsworth in his poem "leisure". The upbringing you receive in the early age is also very important for it. If you are given free time to read and play and explore your surroundings. After it when you step out in the learning world the role of teachers is also pivotal. The teachers who shun cramming and teach the students to write on their own often help children to tape this power. Then comes the social circle, you need to have a good company. The time to time encouragement, proper guidance and some good friends are required in the beginning. It is because goodness breeds goodness. Not to mention the mental peace this is also needed for it. If you want to do any good in the world you need to have plenty of good people around you. If this step is complete you are successful in taping this power. Now the question arises how to use it? The answer is that look around of you to look for inspiration. This inspiration can be a simple floating cloud in the sky or a small snail crawling on the wall of your house or a car running on the road or cartoons on the TV. You don't have to pressurize yourself if it does not come up to you quickly. The need is to keep going and keep your mind free of worries and stress. You need to take care of yourself both physically and mentally only then your soul will be at solace and you can be creative. You need to indulge in the activities which make you feel good like praying, drawing, painting, baking or simply listening to music. Do carry a small notepad with you as this is something which can come to you anytime. Then after you get that inspiration by the nature now is your task to work on it, to create the best out of it. It is not necessary that you should have a good grip on background knowledge of that particular thing before it. You can solve this problem with continuous research and determination. Albert Einstein is the example of it. The most crucial and important aspect is that once you tap not to let it go stagnant. I usually write or make small notes to keep that idea saved up for any future writing. Once you start to ignore it your brain starts to shut down this inspiration seeking process. Before you realize this power is all gone but writer's block is a complete different story. This is the whole procedure through which creativity works according to my observation. If technology had been the main culprit behind lack of creativity than the famous company Apple would not be leading the whole world in its gadget sale. Steve Jobs was a computer geek who laid foundation of PC computers then came forward leading world in selling iPods, iPods and phones. It's the passion, creativity and hard work due to which Apple is still standing out from the crowd.
Now we peek into some reasons that why technology has limited creativity. The first reason as far I say see is a parenting mistake most of the parents are committing. If their three year old is crying the easiest way to mute it is to hand your phone to the child. This can end up killing a lot of things including creativity. A child adopts what it observes. If a child observes that its parents are 24/7 busy on their gadgets, it will do the same. If a child sees its parent ignoring it; may be it turn towards technology. When both sides are busy on their gadgets there will be no attention paid to the upbringing of child. The electro-magnetic waves coming from gadgets are also brain damaging for children. The child will grow up to be rather mean, procrastinate and codependent on technology. It will not understand the value of basic virtues and will not appreciate the little things. The other factor which is greatly leading to the demise of creativity is our rotten education system. For almost 10 years this system works hard to make child a cramming parrot, neglected the personal grooming and producing senseless creatures. This needs to be changed.Technology is not the only menace which is limiting creativity; a lot of other factors sums up to complete this equation as well. What needs to be done is to spread awareness. There is a dire need to address this issue. Excess of everything is bad. We should adopt a moderate approach in our lives. We should live by conventional ways but should also inoculate these new technological gadgets as well in our lives.
