Kate tossed and turned. Sleep just wouldn't come. She couldn't get a particular piercing hazel pair of eyes out of her mind. Her body was still buzzing, horny from her encounter with the rogue the night before. Of all the people who could have been her mate, she thought for the umpteenth time. Luna had dealt her a very bad hand she couldn't help but think bitterly.

When they left the dungeons, Will had filled her in on all the rogue had done. He was one sick son-of-a-bitch. And her mate! She hadn't given Will that information. Thankfully, as a new werewolf, there was no way Will could have guessed what was going on between her and the prisoner. Even experienced werewolves sometimes found it difficult to tell when others met their mates unless they were told.

She had gone home, stood under the shower, and cried for hours. Kate knew that there was no way she could be with Jaxon. He was already condemned. He'd sinned not only against Will but the entire pack. Attempting to burn down the woods of a pack was one of the most grievous offenses ever. No pack took that lightly. Taking shots at them took the entire issue to another level for sure. Clearly, Jaxon Spencer was ready to kill and destroy the pack. He just had to die.

Kate knew that it would be disgraceful to let anyone know that such a person was her mate. It was mortifying. It would also be selfish on her part to expect Jaxon to be pardoned for his sins simply because he was her mate. She couldn't ask that of the pack. Jaxon Spencer was a dead werewolf! Meaning even though she'd found her mate, she wouldn't have the pleasure of being with him. Kate couldn't stop her tears. And even though she felt drained after crying so much, sleep evaded her. Being miserable, angry, and horny was definitely not a combination.

"Fuck!" Kate cursed as she sat up. According to her bedside clock, it was a little after three a.m. "Fuck my life," she muttered as she rolled out of bed. She headed for the kitchen in all her naked glory. She always slept naked.

She took a bottle of water from the fridge and downed it in seconds. Then she began to pace. She couldn't believe her misfortune. What did she do wrong to deserve the cruelest fate ever to befall any werewolf... Watching as a mate was taken from you for good.

"What did I do wrong, Luna?" She screamed in the quiet kitchen as fresh tears coursed down her cheeks. "Don't I deserve the good things in life too?" She cried. "If I did anything to deserve this, please forgive me. It wasn't my intention to offend you. Please, Luna." She dropped to the floor and sobbed her heart out. She felt desolate and so utterly broken.

When Kate eventually got to her feet, she had an expression of resignation. Her demeanor as she moved towards her bedroom was that of someone who had utterly accepted defeat.

"Oh, so you can walk," Jaxon said with a yawn when he saw Ryan outside his cell. "That's more like it," he drawled when a chuckling Ryan materialized in the cell. "Sorry, I don't have a chair for you."

"I have one," Ryan said just as a chair appeared behind him. "How are you doing today?" he asked as he took a seat.

Jaxon shrugged. "Can't complain. Loving my digs," he added sarcastically. "What do you want?"

"Came to have lunch with you." With a flick of his hand, a table covered with dishes appeared between Ryan and Jaxon.

"Wow! Is this my last meal then?" Jaxon raised a brow.

"I'm told you have refused to eat," Ryan said as he began to dish some food for himself. "So I decided to have lunch with you."

"Do you feed all your condemned prisoners like this?"

"Nope. Just you. You're not dying on my watch from starvation so you've gotta eat."

"And if I refuse?"

"You don't wanna find out what I'll do." The threat was delivered so sweetly that Jaxon almost missed it.

"I don't know about you but where I come from, we usually brush our teeth and shower before eating," Jaxon murmured. For some reason, he wasn't scared of Ryan although he knew from all indications that he was a powerful and dangerous being.

"Eating before both will not kill you." Ryan dug into his meal. "I'll arrange for you to have both after our meal."

With a shrug, Jaxon started to dish some mashed potato and juicy steak onto his plate. "Why am I not dead yet? Still preventing the bloodthirsty hounds from sending me into the afterlife?"

"Something like that."

"Still don't know why you want me around?"

"Still don't know," Ryan shook his head.

"Interesting. Am I your responsibility then?"

"You could say that."

"About my execution, would you be a darling and allow me a last wish before I'm killed?"

Ryan looked up at the rogue. "Well, shouldn't you wait till you're actually about to die to make a last wish?" Ryan chuckled. The rogue amused the hell out of him.

"Depends on the kind of wish."

"Okay, let's hear it."

"I want to fuck Kate."

Ryan dissolved into a fit of coughs when the food he'd been in the process of swallowing went the wrong way. He accepted the opened bottle of water that Jaxon thrust at him and drank it gratefully.

"Are you okay?" Jaxon looked genuinely concerned.

"Are you nuts?" Ryan shot back. "What kind of wish is that?" he stared at Jaxon as if he'd just realized he was a different species.

"I saw her the other night." Jaxon shrugged with a boyish grin on his face. "She's a stunner. All I could think of was having those luscious lips wrapped around my cock and watching my hot juice spilling..."

"Stop," Ryan sounded as though he was being strangled.

"Scandalized?" Jaxon chuckled at the shock on Ryan's face. "Just painting you a picture, mate." Then he continued with deliberate sensuality and a naughty look... "I want to fuck her until her voice is hoarse from screaming." At this point, Ryan was blushing so hard. "Gotta tap that ass before I check out." Jaxon stared at Ryan who seemed to have been rendered speechless.

"I can't believe you're thinking about sex at a time like this," Ryan finally gasped. "You werewolves are a bunch of dogs."

"That's the most ridiculous insult I've ever heard," Jaxon laughed. "We are all in the canine family so..."

"I know that," Ryan groaned. "I'm a professor of Zoology, thank you very much."

"Well, I could have been fooled," Jaxon chuckled.

"Do you know the trouble you're in right now?" Ryan looked incredulous.

"So? I don't regret what I did. But for you busting my arse, I had more in store for his royal dickness."

"Anything to do with his sister?" Ryan frowned.

"Damn, he told you." Jaxon's grin was downright naughty. "Williams told you what I said about his sister and her family." It wasn't a question.

"He did." Ryan nodded. "No one wants to hear that their family is in danger."

"Yes!" Jaxon couldn't suppress his satisfied grin and the naughty twinkle in his eyes. He'd accomplished what he had set out to. "Made him shit his pants huh?"

"What are you planning on doing to them?" Ryan asked, his expression one of disapproval.

"Nothing." Jaxon gave a nonchalant shrug, and then laughed when he saw the doubt in Ryan's eyes. "Relax, mate. I've never been a fan of telling lies. If I wanted to do something to them, I'd have done that before now. And to Stan too. I only told the soldier that to shake him."

"You're terrible." Ryan shook his head.

"I hate that soldier," he breathed.

"One would have thought destroying everything of his would be enough satisfaction."

"You think I'm after material shit?" he gave Ryan a look that showed how ridiculous he found his statement. "A life for a life, right?" Jaxon whispered, the look on his face a cross between anger and guilt. But for his principles, he would have killed Will's human family already.

"You lost someone." It wasn't a question. Ryan stared hard at the rogue, beginning to see a crack in the rogue's hard shell.

"I don't want to talk about it."

Ryan nodded. "Did you enjoy your lunch?"

"I did, thanks."

"Good." Ryan looked pleased. With another flick of his wrist, the table with the remaining food disappeared. Then he stood up and reached out a hand towards Jaxon. "Take my hand."

The two men disappeared from the cell the next instant.

Kate sat on the floor of her living room and stared at the clock on the wall. It was half past one a.m. She hadn't gotten any sleep in three straight days since she laid eyes on the rogue. Neither had she left her home. After leaving instructions to her subordinates in the pack and at work, she'd turned off her phone and locked herself in her home. She didn't draw the blinds, turn on her lights or use any electronic device. She didn't have the urge to eat, talk to anyone or even go for a run.

All Kate felt was her extremely restless beast howling so pitifully within her. It wasn't a pleasant feeling at all. She knew she looked like a mess but didn't have the desire to do anything about it. With a groan, she stood up and headed for the bathroom. But even after her shower, she still didn't feel any better.

"I can't fucking go on like this," She groaned as she sat on her bed and buried her face in her palms. "Fuck it," she rasped after a moment and got to her feet. With a stoic expression that gave no indication of what was going on in her mind, Kate moved toward her closet.

**

Jaxon smelt her before he saw her. That sweet heady scent went straight to his head, making his eyes flash amber, his pulse pound, his mouth water, and his cock jerk inside his pants as if it had a mind of its own. He checked his wristwatch as he left his stone bed. It was almost two a.m. Jaxon approached the iron bars, willing those nasty bars to either open or disappear. He needed to be inside that woman so bad. Had Ryan asked Kate to come, he wondered as the excitement within increased.

"Finally," Jaxon muttered when Kate appeared, breathing in deeply as though he wanted to savour her scent. "So...how are we going to do this?" his voice dripped with suggestion, its sexy cadence doing things to Kate's insides that she couldn't describe. There was no question what he meant.

Fuck! Kate cursed silently. That scent, that accent...and his tone! The rogue's voice made her wet just hearing it.

Jaxon's eyes which were back to their original colour and filled with blatant lust ran appreciatively over Kate's body. She had on the sexiest black tracksuit Jaxon had ever seen. The pants were riding very low on her hips, leaving her midsection exposed sexily. Her trendy black trainers completed her look beautifully. The cherry on top of the cake was the arousal he smelt on Kate. Jaxon's breath quickened with uncontrollable desire as his eyes moved up to Kate's hooded head. But just one look at the misery on Kate's face and his brows were snapping together in instant concern.

"What is wrong?" he asked.

"Everything," Kate mumbled, cursing the husky breathlessness of her own voice. She leaned her forehead against the bars, uncaring who or what he was. She knew that Jaxon wouldn't harm her.

Kate wanted to hate the rogue but just couldn't bring herself to. She hated her body's response to him but couldn't help it. And that made her feel wretched. If she noticed his changed outfit and clean smell, she didn't say. Being near the man gave her some calming energy, which she loved. When she felt Jaxon's hand pushing back the hood of her tracksuit, she didn't pull back.

When Kate felt fingers running soothingly through her hair, a shiver she couldn't control washed over her. She felt her scalp tightening, felt a tingle down her neck, and then felt the sweetest sensations spreading throughout her body, drawing goosebumps in its wake. Kate allowed her eyes to close in contentment and almost protested when that soothing caress ceased. She looked up at the man who had managed to turn her world upside down and almost laughed at what she saw. Jaxon was staring at his hand with a confused look.

"What?" Kate asked.

"I don't know why I did that," Jaxon muttered, still staring at his hand. He didn't know why he had that need to comfort the woman standing before him and found it even more strange that he'd actually tried to do just that.

Kate exhaled audibly as she stared at her clueless mate. Just looking at the sexy man had her pulse skyrocketing and need pooling between her thighs. All she wanted to do was climb that tall, muscular, sexy goodness and allow him to sink into her wet warmth to give her that mind-blowing pleasure she knew he could give her. It would be great to experience it at least once. She willed her pounding heart to calm down but it didn't.

"Did anyone see you come down here?" Jaxon asked huskily. Despite his confusion, he couldn't curb his desire for the lady whose scent made his mouth water.

"The guards." Her gaze dropped to the long legs encased in sweatpants. Then unable to control herself, those traitorous eyes drifted up to that bulge between his thighs. Oh shit! Kate hastily jerked her gaze back to Jaxon's face.

"And they allowed you?" he sounded incredulous. He wondered what Kate had said to get the guards to allow her to come and see him at that time.

Kate nodded because she didn't think she could speak. She didn't bother telling Jaxon her position in the pack or explaining that as the head of warriors, she had oversight responsibilities for any prisoner. And as their boss, no prison guard dared to stop her. Jaxon didn't need to know all that.

"Did they bother you?" he asked, clearly trying to decipher why Kate looked so unhappy. Kate shook her head no. "Bribed them, huh?" he chuckled but stiffened when Kate didn't react this time. Silence did mean consent after all, right? "What exactly did you bribe them with?" His eyes darkened with condemnation. "Fucked your way down here just to get fucked, huh?" he growled.

Kate's fist moved so fast that Jaxon didn't see it coming. He reeled back when that fist connected with his nose.

"Bloody hell," he groaned as his hand went to his face. He couldn't help but silently acknowledge that the lady had held back. She could have punched harder if she had wanted to. "Well, now that the foreplay is done, let's fuck," he chuckled, rubbing his nose.

"I'd appreciate it if you refrain from insulting me." Kate didn't even sound angry. "Not after all the shit you've pulled," she added coolly as if she hadn't just landed a blow on him.

"Hit a nerve, I reckon," he smirked. "How about you get one of your boyfriends to open this fucking cell so that I make it better?" he allowed his gaze to run down Kate's body. "At least for you."

Kate's answering chuckle was without humor. "You're just a typical nasty rogue, aren't you?"

"Unapologetically so." Jaxon gave a slight smile, a devilish glint in his eyes. "Know what? Insult me all you want, sweet Kate. Won't stop me from wanting you stretched and impaled on my thick length..." His voice dropped even lower as his gaze dropped to Kate's heaving chest. "...as I keep you poised on the edge of climax until you beg for release." His heated gaze went back to Kate's. "Only then will I give you that sweet, sweet relief."

"What was I thinking coming here," Kate's whispered but Jaxon heard her perfectly.

"Oh, we both know why you're here, darling," he drawled as he leaned against the bars and allowed his heated gaze to run over Kate. "Rather a bit slow if you ask me though. I had high expectations to be honest. I thought you came to give my dick a good workout but it looks like you're just a cock tease. Did the soldier put you up to this? Sent you to come and torture me huh?"

"You deserve whatever that soldier has in store for you after what you've done." Kate sounded drained.

"Do you have any idea what his actions, backed by your pack's voodoo shit have cost people?" he rasped harshly.

"You were on the wrong side of the fucking law. And he was only doing his job. Do you have any idea how psychotic your actions make you seem? I know you're a rogue, but try to think rationally for once. Take a step back and..."

"You don't fucking know me," Jaxon growled. "You don't know my reasons for doing what I did. You don't know shit."

"That stunt you pulled on the basketball court. The fire you set to our woods... did you pause to think about the lives that would have been lost if Ryan hadn't stopped it?" Kate was shaking with fury at this point.

"All I had to do was use silver bullets and none of you would be speaking right now," Jaxon shot back. "How about a thank you, Ms. High and Mighty?"

"Do you even know the gravity of what you've done?" Kate's voice cracked with emotion. "Do you have any idea what your stupid actions have cost me?" her voice had reduced to a whisper. "I don't deserve this."

"Whoa, hold on a minute, lady." Jaxon put up his hands and took a step back as if to ward off an attack. "The first time I laid eyes on you was just about three nights ago," he breathed, a bewildered look in his eyes. "I don't know how my actions could have cost you anything. Frankly, you rather seem more psychotic right now if you ask me."

And that was all it took for the tears that Kate had been holding back since she laid eyes on Jaxon for a second time to spill down her cheeks. She couldn't control the silent sobs that shook her frame. And she didn't care at all that a total stranger was watching her cry. Knowing that Jaxon didn't even know who she was to him killed her.

"Aw come on, not the waterworks," Jaxon groaned, trying to ignore the sudden desolation he felt within at the sight of Kate in tears. "Hey, I take it back if that will stop your tears." He didn't understand why but seeing the lady in tears made his chest tighten so painfully. He hated the feeling. "You don't seem psychotic, okay?" he said but that didn't stop the sobbing. "Hey, please don't," he pleaded softly, feeling a strong need to hold the sobbing lady.

After sobbing for what seemed like hours but was actually minutes, Kate wiped at her cheeks with her sleeves and then leaned her head against the bars. This time, Jaxon didn't make any move to touch her although the urge to do that was so strong.

"Are you okay?" Jaxon finally asked quietly.

"No, I'm not." She shook her head.

"If I promise not to harm you or run, can you get the guards to unlock my cell for just a few minutes?"

"Why?" Kate asked shakily.

But Jaxon couldn't bring himself to say why he wanted no bars between them so he remained quiet.

"It can't be opened," Kate sighed. "It's been spelled shut."

"Spelled? As in witchcraft?" Jaxon smirked, Kate's answer only confirming his theory. "Lady, your pack is just fucked up. Who spells a cell shut? What happened to good old locks? Are you werewolves or witches? Like that Ryan dude, what's his deal? 'Cause I can sense his wolf but clearly, he's also something else."

A chuckle escaped Kate despite the wretchedness she felt within. "Ryan is a warlock," She looked up at Jaxon. "But yeah, he's a werewolf too."

"Damn!" Jaxon's eyes went wide. "So what does that make him? A demon?"

"Did you speak to him?"

"Even had lunch with him."

"And did he look or act like a demon?"

"Well, no but the guy pulled a stunt that made me almost shit my pants the first time I saw him so..."

Kate laughed then. "You're an idiot."

"I've been told," he smiled. "Are you part warlock too?"

"No," Kate gasped with surprise. "Why do you ask?"

"Well, I kinda feel like I'm under your spell," he said softly, the heat in his gaze causing a delicious shiver to slither through Kate. "I know witches and warlocks cast spells that make people feel things so..." he shrugged.

"When you're under someone's spell you call the person a whore?" Kate shot back, a bit surprised at the words of the clueless rogue.

That drew a groan from Jaxon. "I'm sorry. Just find it strange that you were allowed to come down here at this hour that's all."

"Well, I'm no witch or warlock," Kate said. "I'm a werewolf and nothing more. This is not what you were wearing the other day," she finally commented on the obvious.

"Ryan took me somewhere to take a shower. Then he gave me a change of clothes."

Kate snorted. "Some prisoner you are. Getting showers and shit. Think a demon would have been that nice?"

"Well, demons are deceitful aren't they?" Jaxon snorted. "They might act nice but would be playing you from an angle. I won't be surprised if the executioner shows up at dawn," he gave a nonchalant shrug.

"You don't sound bothered at all."

"I honestly don't give a fuck," Jaxon stretched and rolled his neck, his muscles tensing and body flexing like a large cat sunning. Kate stared.

The movement caused his t-shirt to slide up, presenting Kate with a line of hair that sexily trailed down his tight-as-hell stomach to disappear under his sweatpants. Kate couldn't control the tiny pitiful moan that escaped her parted lips as the sight hit her hard, reminding her of all that she stood to lose. When she heard Jaxon's snicker, her gaze shot up and connected with his amused ones. She wanted to slap the self-satisfied smile that stretched across those wonderful lips, off.

"Can I stop stretching now or do you want to look some more?" Jaxon teased but Kate could only stare...couldn't speak. "You know I want to fuck you just as badly as you want me to," he murmured, his voice guttural, vibrating with the animalistic growl that made her already wet core clench deliciously. "And you're the only one who can make that happen. Find a way to unlock this cell. I promise not to run."

Kate finally shook her head to compose herself. "The last thing I want is to have sex with someone with suicidal tendencies or already condemned...like you." she said quietly.

"Suicidal tendencies?" Jaxon scoffed. "Why would I have..."

"Only a person with suicidal tendencies would attempt what you did. Against this pack. Don't you have any relatives?" Kate asked, trying to ignore the sweet quivering in her lower stomach and the hardening of her nipples in reaction to her seeing her mate's pleasure trail.

"Not even one. So you see... I won't be missed," he said with indifference. "Nobody gives a fuck whether I live or die, so..." Well, except for those boys, he thought. "Shit!" Jaxon groaned low in his throat. He'd totally forgotten about them.

"What?" Kate sensed her mate's sudden agitation and moved closer to the bars. She almost reached out to touch him but caught herself just in time.

"Never mind." Jaxon suddenly looked preoccupied.

"I have to go," Kate said softly. She knew she was not fully in control of herself that very moment. Could scarcely think straight and that scared her.

Jaxon felt his heart drop. "Will I see you tomorrow?"

"Technically, this is a new day."

"You know what I mean."

"Do you want to?" Kate shot back.

"Yes." His voice was barely above a whisper. "Please."

Both stared at each other, unable to mask the need each felt for the other. Whilst Jaxon couldn't help but wonder what was happening to him, Kate knew she was fucked. For Jaxon, he'd never been that besotted with a woman his entire life, and for Kate, she couldn't stop her mind from thinking up ways to get Ryan to break that spell on the cell.

"Don't tell anyone about this visit," Kate said as she turned on her heels and started to walk away.

"I thought you said the guards saw you."

"Don't tell anyone," she repeated.

"Is that a condition?" Jaxon called out after her but got no response.

He watched Kate until she disappeared, her scent lingering long after she was gone. Jaxon adjusted his erection, wondering how the sassy girl could fuck up his brain with no effort at all.

But even as he returned to his stone bed, he couldn't wait to see her again.

***

Meanwhile, miles away from the pack house, at the same time the disturbed warrior walked away from her clueless mate, a group of men stood around a table covered with documents, engrossed in whatever task they were engaged in. They only met at dawn to work when they were angry, determined, and in an attack mode. They didn't plan on leaving any stone unturned. One of them stood in front of a flip chart, writing clues the others threw at him. At that very moment, he was circling a boldly written Australia on the chart with a red marker.

The arrowheads were close! Whoever was after them was going to regret their very existence when they caught them. No one fucked with the Arrowheads and go unscathed.

And as they worked, Lieutenant Ian Williams looked on with his arms folded across his chest, a worried look in his eyes, thinking... how the fuck do I stop them?
