Scavengers
I'm not good at chapter names :/
Had 5 hours worth of HW yesterday, none today. What is this maddness.
-------------------------------
It was quiet when the human boy finally came to his senses.
Ugh...
he sat up from the thick, tough, but strangely soft blanket that was covering him, before that suddenly shifted on it's own to be Toothless's midnight black wing. The dragon's head shot up immediately, and once he saw Hiccup was awake he bounded around the cave they were in like he had a draconic sugar rush.
"Hey, hey, bud, yes, yes, it's good to see you too." Hiccup said quietly, rubbing the Night Fury's snout. "Where are we?" Toothless gestured to the cave with his tail, which was still missing the other half.
"Well yeah, I can see that. Are we on an island?" Toothless's mood dimmed and nodded.
"It's fine bud, we'll get out of here as soon as we can. Now, can you please let me go of your death grip?" Hiccup pleaded. Toothless had pinned Hiccup to the ground so he couldn't get up and walk. Toothless's face turned to guilt, and Hiccup suddenly became concerned.
"Toothless..." the dragon slowly lifted his wing off of Hiccup's legs, and the human boy had to suppress a cry of shock. His left foot and lower left leg were gone, the only thing there was a charred burnt stump.
"Okay, okay, don't panic..." Toothless whined and looked down in guilt.
"It's okay bud, it's not your fault. This is just... something I'll have to get used to."
Hundreds of Vikings have lost limbs before, right? Gobber barely has any left. But he's still doing fine. This is just a minor thing. Nothing more. The thought of still having lost one of his limbs made him sick, however. Wait, who's Gobber? Ah oh well.
"Okay Toothless, mind helping me up? We've got a lot of work ahead of us." Toothless immediately hurried over, his tail swishing, and allowed Hiccup to use his head to hold himself up. "Okay, right.. This isn't going to work. I mean, not forever." Toothless gave him a "well duh," look. "Okay, let's go outside, and see if we can find anything to use as a pegleg or something like that."
Toothless nodded silently and slowly started guiding the one-legged human out of the cave. They had to blink and adjust to the daylight, which was surprisingly bright compared to the comforting darkness of the cave.
"How did we get to this island anyway?" Hiccup wondered out loud, seeing the hostile, dull grey scenery all around them. The island itself seems to be empty of any life besides them. Toothless looked at him with a shocked face.
"What? Am I supposed to know that?" Toothless slowly nodded. Hiccup searched his memory, but couldn't seem to remember. In fact, he couldn't really remember anything. He knew in the back of his mind there was things that had happened before now, like how he knew Toothless, but there was no specific memories associated with the dragon.
"Okay, um... oh well. It's no big deal, is it? Let's just get some supplies and head back home, right?" Toothless shook his head urgently, making Hiccup more confused.
"No?" The dragon frowned in a draconic way, but simply shook his head again.
Why can't we go home? Where even is home? Maybe this memory loss thing will cause more problems than Hiccup originally thought.
"Okay... then let's just get moving, bud."
The two scavenged along the beach. There were the remains of several charred ships that were mostly sunk, something seemed to have totally fire blasted the ships.
"What happened here...?" Hiccup questioned, wondering what he had missed, or was missing. Toothless sighed and started walking to the ships, guiding the one legged boy along beside him.
"What are you doing Toothless?" Hiccup asked. The dragon reached down and grabbed a piece of charred wood in his mouth and moved some of the other wood with it, before spitting it out and grimacing. Hiccup chuckled before figuring out what his best friend was saying and carefully started shifting through the splinters of wood, looking for decent ones to use for... whatever they could use it for.
"Hey, is this okay for a leg? Okay, that sounded really weird." Toothless gave his echoey laugh and picked up a large piece of wood in his mouth. "Oh geez, Toothless, please no-!" Toothless dropped the curved piece of wood on Hiccup, trapping him.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me. Really? Hey, that might work," The piece of wood and made a smaller piece of wood stick up from the ground, and it looked like it could fit the gear change on Toothless's tail-
Wait...
"Toothless, what happened to your tail?" Toothless frowned and looked annoyed. He whined and started flapping his wings, trying to get off the ground. It seemed to be more of a gesture, however, to the angry dark clouds that covered the sky.
"Okay..." This really is going to be a problem. It's too bad Toothless and I can't actually talk.
Toothless seemed to give up with an exasperated sigh.
Hiccup sighed as well.
"Oh well. Now, maybe we can find some rope or something?" Toothless perked up and carefully lowered his head to the ground, having Hiccup sit down with it. "Okay..."
the Night Fury glided over to one of the ships, and after a few tries snatched something from the masts. "Nice going bud!" Hiccup called, figuring out what the Strike class had gotten. Toothless glided back with a line of charred rope in his mouth, which he dropped and gave Hiccup a gummy smile. "Way to go!" Hiccup continued to praise, smiling and scratching Toothless under the chin.
The dragon became excited and bounded around, although being careful not to jump on his rider friend.
"Okay, let's see what we've got here," Hiccup said to himself, examining the rope. At one end it was burnt and frayed, probably from where it was hanging into the flames of whatever fire raged through here. But at the other end was perfectly fine. After tying the piece of wood to his leg, he tested his handy work out.
It felt strange to not feeling anything there, even though it felt like there should be. Like he should still be able to flex his foot or wiggle his toes in his boot, but in reality there was no foot or toes to respond.
"Toothless, mind helping me up?" Toothless stopped playing and looked at Hiccup with big, confused eyes. "Well, you DID leave me here on the ground-" Toothless remembered and immediately bounded over, skidding on the large black pebbles like a cat to help his friend.
"Geez, it's fine bud! It's fine." Toothless allowed his rider to use him for support, and they slowly got Hiccup off the ground and standing. "Okay..." Hiccup readied himself and took a step forward, but immediately his bad leg gave out and the pair scrambled not to have the human faceplant into the rocky beach.
"O-okay, right. This'll just take a bit to get used to. Sorry bud," Hiccup apologized. Toothless seemed indifferent, caring too much about the human to be annoyed. Slowly they made their way back to their cave, grabbing what decent wood they had gathered as they went.
"Okay bud, this should do it." The rider sighed, putting the final piece of wood on their pile.
They had sorted the wood for what would be firewood and what they could actually use for projects, and by they I really mean Hiccup with Toothless tossing pieces of wood to him boredly.
"Light it up!" Toothless grinned and shot a more liquidy plasma blast at the pile, setting it on fire like how he would warm up his sleeping spot back on Berk. Speaking of which, Toothless whined sadly and looked out at the night sky outside the cave. Hiccup looked as well, figuring out what his best friend wanted.
"Sorry bud, until we get you a new tail we're stuck going places but foot and ship. And even those two aren't going so well either." Hiccup sighed, feeling strangely alone. He couldn't remember anyone or anything really besides Toothless and things like blueprints, and it was starting to get annoying. Toothless clearly remembered how they got marooned on this island that was the remains of a battle, but to Hiccup is was like it was locked away in a cage-
Cages.
Anger boiled in Hiccup. Cages. Innocent dragons trapped in cages to be killed by... a bunch of people, because they were forced and misunderstood.
Huh. Did I maybe release Toothless from one of those cages? Hiccup wondered to himself. That didn't seem to be the right answer though. Guess I'll just have to suck it up until I figure this all out.
Toothless yawned and curled up closer to Hiccup, and the human in turn leaned back into the dragon.
They were each other's only source of comfort in their lonely world, the only one who truly understood them for them. The only one to try and understand, the only one to try and help. It was a beautiful friendship only the gods could have written. They would stay at each other's side through thick and thin, good and bad, joy and sorrow, through life and death.
"Good night Toothless..." Hiccup yawned quietly, falling asleep to the crackle of the fire and the steady breathing to the dragon.
---------------------------------------------
There's probably going to be a lot of Hiccup talking to himself lol
Until later.
The songs on my playlist are kind of ironic to this, because right now See You Again by Wiz Khaflia is playing. (I have a small playlist XD) I just think that it's funny that it kind of fits this plot, if you think about it in a way. Maybe not, that it's just me thinking ahead in the story??
Also, question-
Do you want me to go for a more detailed thing of what Toothless and Hiccup or doing, or skip around some? I have a much bigger plotline planned, this is just the beginning. Prologue, almost. So do you want me to get the the good stuff already or explain how they get off the island and such?? It's up to any readers I actually get, I really don't care either way. There's 200 max story parts on Wattpad, and I'm not afraid to stretch that limit!
Please let me know about your opinion to the question above so I know what and where I need to go next.
Bis bald! Auf weidersehen!
-Becca out!
