Communication
"Toothless, calm down! I can't fix this wound if you don't sit still!" Hiccup scolded as the Night Fury continually squirmed from the skinny human's hands.
They had been going through the ship's graveyard again looking for more materials, and Hiccup had cut himself quite badly on a swordpoint he hadn't seen, and though he wasn't sure what Toothless did, apparently stabbed himself somehow in the leg.
They had established a sort of routine in the weeks they had been stranded on this grey island. Wake up, go scavenging the battlefield again, bring whatever they found back to their cave that was their home base, go back out again and explore the huge extinct volcano, and then come back and cook some food and go to sleep.
Toothless growled in protest and scooted again from Hiccup's mediocre medical supplies, bumping his injured leg with Hiccup's, making them both yelp in pain. Taking the opportunity, the human grabbed the dragon's injured appendage and started wrapping it with the makeshift bandages they had ripped into strips from and old sail. Toothless grumbled under his breath as his rider firmly wrapped his leg in pale cloth. (Watching RTTE when writing this part and silently screaming over Hiccstrid >^< >=T )
"Yeah yeah, I'm not exactly happy with us either," Hiccup agreed indifferently, sighing with irritation. He finished with his dragon's leg to bandage his own, and it was either lucky or unlucky that it was his stunted leg that was hurt. There was blood that had soaked his pantleg, and it seemed that some of Toothless's dark blood smeared on his pants as well.
Let's hope that doesn't cause issues, the human thought, not knowing anything about disease you could get from that. He was no Gothi, despite his on-the-scene, honestly winged medical skills.
"You winged that? Seriously?"
What the- Hiccup looked around, seriously confused. He swore he had heard a voice, but there was no one there besides Toothless. The human shrugged it off, assuming he had probably just heard the wind through the skeletons of the ships. He hissed when he pulled the bandages too tight on his leg, and Toothless immediately dropped the sulking and comforted Hiccup.
"It's fine Toothless,"
"If you say so..." Hiccup was not expecting to actually hear a reply from the dragon.
"Wait, did you just- you just-" Toothless tilted his head, confused at his rider.
"Did I just what?"
"Holy mother of Thor... You just spoke?"
Toothless blinked and looked at Hiccup extremely confused and surprised.
"Hiccup, it's impossible for dragons to physically speak with humans- except I just did?!"
They both realized that Toothless had been speaking something that neither could physically understand, yet they understood it just fine. Toothless started freaking out and scrambling around, panicking.
"Okay, okay, uh... let's ask a question that can't be answered normally. Uh, what island are we on?" Hiccup asked. Toothless's body tensed.
"Do I really have to answer that?"
"Okay phew, I'm not going crazy. Uh, no, but I would like to know that bud."
Both rider and dragon cracked a smile at Hiccup's comment. Toothless still seemed tense, but answered anyway.
"We're on the Red Death island. It was the nest, more like prison, of nearly all the dragons in the archipelago, until we killed it."
"WE killed it?" Toothless nodded.
"Argh, somehow you lost your memory." Toothless hit Hiccup lightly with his half-a-tail in annoyance.
"Yes, we killed the giant dragon the size of that mountain that was enslaving all the dragons. That's how you lost your leg."
Hiccup glanced down at the piece of wood that replaced his foot. It was barely staying put, and he would often have to retie the rope around his leg, both real and fake, to keep it in place.
"Huh. Well, now I know how that happened. So how'd you think this happened bud? At least we can have proper conversations now."
Toothless smiled in his draconic way and shrugged his wings. "Who knows, but I think I'm going to enjoy it!"
The dragon-rider duo hobbled back to their cave, testing their new found way of communication. Toothless was filling in Hiccup about what had happened to get them marooned here, although he seemed to be continually leaving out parts. Things such as where they were from, or Hiccup's family and past life. Maybe Toothless didn't know those things, but the dragon was definitely leaving things out nonetheless.
Meanwhile the Hiccup was soaking in every detail, wishing he could physically remember some of these memories. They tugged at the back of his mind, seeming familiar, just for some reason they were... locked away.
"Hey bud?"
"Yes, Hiccup?" Toothless replied, nudging the boy playfully, although both were being careful not to touch each other's wound.
"How'd you think I lost my memories?" Toothless frowned and purred thoughtfully.
"I don't know, Hiccup. I'm no expert on humans. Maybe when we fell you hit your head really hard on the Red Death somewhere? But right before we fought, things were not good for you. Maybe you forgot because you wanted to forget."
That was some food for thought. What would I have wanted to forget? I mean, everything seemed great, from what Toothless has been saying.
Toothless purred again, curling closer to the human.
"Hey there," Hiccup smiled and said quietly, feeling relaxed once again.
"I haven't left," the dragon commented, having the same contentedness that Hiccup did. The human chuckled as they sat in their cave, waiting and watching the clouds and sky.
"It's too bad we're going to have to waste the day, it sure is nice outside."
"Ironically. The words 'nice' and 'Red Death prison-nest island' are two words that really shouldn't go together."
"Haha, that does seem true." Toothless's breathing softened and rhythmic, showing he had fallen asleep.
Aw, Toothless the cat strikes back, eh bud? Hiccup thought cheekily, laughing at his friend. Then he looked back out to the bright blue sky, wishing he could be out in the beautiful weather.
But we should probably stay here and let ourselves heal. They'll probably be other beautiful days, right? I mean, nothing can be all doom and gloom forever. Just like we can't be stuck on this island forever. See, we'll be fine! Just have to wait for that sunny day to come around again.
An interesting way to console himself, but in all honesty Hiccup WAS worried they would never get off the island. There was no natural resources except for the ships they had been scavenging, and although there was a lot of useful materials there, they would eventually have to run out at some point. And there was also no food, Toothless had to catch fish in the water before they darted away or go into the giant cave where the Red Death had lived and scavenge what not-rotten meat or fish they could from there. And the second option was both disgusting and not plentiful.
Toothless whined happily and shifted in his cat nap, covering Hiccup with a wing like a blanket.
"Oh, alright." the human chuckled and leaned into his best friend, also quicky falling into the comfortable blanket of sleep.
