Berk (Part 1)

"Okay bud looks like we've got another island ahead of us," Hiccup announced, looking through the telescope he had fashioned.

They had been island hopping for about two weeks now, at first enjoying each other's company, but now they had run out of things to talk about and with close quarters, had been starting to get on each other's nerves.

This would be the third island they had visited, with the first being a snowy one where a dragon that could summon a snowstorm lived, the second another gloomy island where the inhabitant Outcasts had almost killed Toothless. Now Hiccup was starting to agree that most people in this archipelago weren't the nicest people ever, and was nervous about this new island.

"What's it look like? Another death place where people want my hide again?" Toothless asked sarcastically.

"Ha ha, very funny. Actually, this place looks fairly friendly. Lots of trees, it's rocky, oh wait, there's a town!" Hiccup pointed out the village that climbed up the mountainside.

"Wait... Oh no. Hiccup, we're skipping this island." Toothless ordered, looking at some things in the water and the village.

"What? Why? We need some-"

"NO. If those people see EITHER of us they'll kill us on sight!" Toothless was panicking slightly.

"Toothless, calm down. Why? We were almost killed, like three times before this?" Hiccup noted, trying to be funny. Toothless shook his large head. "Toothless, if we're not going to that island, can you at least tell me why?" Hiccup reasoned, suspicious of his friend's worry.

"We really just shouldn't go!"

"Toothless..."

The dragon glared at the human, who kept a steady gaze underneath the Night Fury's bright green eyes.

"Hiccup."

"For Thor's sake just tell me! It's not like I'm going to kill you because of it!"

"No, but those people will! Everyone one of those damn Berkians hate your guts, just for us being friends! I don't want to loose you..." Toothless admitted, and Hiccup immediately apologized.

"Toothless, I'm not going anywhere bud!" The dragon relaxed at the promise and purred happily. "So this is Berk, huh? You've mentioned this place before." Hiccup continued, looking curiously at the Night Fury, clearly asking an unspoken question the dragon did not want to answer.

"Do you REALLY want to know? You'd be happier not knowing what the Vikings here did."

"Toothless, I just... I HAVE to know. I'm probably not going to remember this stuff any time soon. And don't get me wrong, I want to, but if there's a reason I don't remember any of this, then I at least want to know what happened." Though a few little memories had come back, there was nothing as to Hiccup's identity before he met Toothless.

"Fine... How to put this... I'm just going to say this. We're from Berk." Toothless scowled saying that. Hiccup was surprised, but didn't react.

"Vikings on Berk live by the phrase, ''kill or be killed'. They used to be one of the main targets for dragon raids when the Red Death was around, and together over generations have killed thousands of dragons. They don't understand us, they don't try to. You're the only one who does."

Toothless looked down, and Hiccup smiled slightly and put a hand on his wing for comfort.

"And you know what the Vikings did? They kicked you out. I saw the chief myself say that you weren't a Viking. They're ruthless, evil, prejudiced things that don't care for other's lives just because they can't understand them." Toothless growled, clear hatred laced through his voice.

Hiccup was surprised to hear about his past, and felt anger boiling in his blood as well. Dragons are amazing creatures! How can people not be fascinated by them?

Guess I'm not one of these Vikings then, if they hate dragons like Toothless says they do.

"Thank you Toothless, I'm sorry. I'm not one of them." Hiccup decided, little did he know he was repeating something from the past. Toothless recognized it and purred again, happy his friend wasn't angry with him.

"So are we going past the island?" Toothless verified, thinking he had won that battle. Hiccup looked around at the supplies on the deck, noting they could do with more supplies like food.

"What if we just go to the back of the island and I go in? I don't think we can miss this stop bud. You're not exactly the best fisher." Toothless growled and rolled his eyes, knowing that was true.

"Fine. But don't give ANYTHING away about who you are. Like I said they'll-"

"Kill me on sight. Right. Thanks for the heads up. I'll make up a name or something, how about that?" Toothless thought for a moment and then nodded.

"And cover your face too. You still look like Hiccup, even if your hair is super long."

"Ha ha, yeah. I'll fix that eventually. Right. Let's find a place to land, and then I'll be back before you know it!"

Hiccup carefully made his way through the loose forests of this island. He and Toothless had landed on the back side of the island, and after some climbing (and much scraping of limbs) the cliffs was able to actually start going to this village. Everything was familiar on this island, but at the same time nothing was. By now Hiccup was used to the feeling in the back of his mind, and decided he would probably never be able to do anything about it.

There we are, Berk. Hiccup thought as he broke through the trees above the village. About halfway down the hill was his first encounter with one of these Vikings.

"Hey! Who are you?"

"Yeah, tell us or we'll rip your face off!"

"Sorry to tell you, but that's not really possible..."

"Shut it fish face!"

Interesting argument they have going, Hiccup commented in his mind, turning to see three kids his age coming from the forest as well.

The first one was a girl, with blonde hair and a fringe bangs that made her look very gothic, and had skulls around her studded leather skirt, metal shoulder pads, and a slightly-striped light blue shirt.

The second one that had threatened to "rip his face off" was short and had a very arrogant face, and a lot of his clothes were covered in soot.

The third boy was chubby and also shorter, and wore what looked like a fur dress.

"Oh uh, uh, hi! The name's..." Oh, wait...

He couldn't say his name, and completely forgot to make up a new one for this. Looking around at the things he had around him, he took the one that kept getting in his eyes.

"-Sun." he finished. The girl's eyes widened, and for a moment he thought he was doomed.

"Sun?" the chubby boy asked, sounding confused.

"Yeah, you know, the big ball of fire in the sky?" Hiccup asked, pointing much less awkwardly at the sun in the sky.

"Odd name. But cool. Hey well, I'm Snotlout, this is my girlfriend Astrid-" as soon as he said that the girl, Astrid, punched him in the gut and judo flipped him over her head.

"For the LAST time, Snotlout, I am NOT going to be your girlfriend!" she yelled, clearly ticked off.

"And that just happened again. Anyways, I'm Fishlegs." the other boy introduced himself.

"What are you doing here? I've never seen you before, or have I?" Astrid interrogated suspiciously.

"What? No no, I'm uh, I'm just passing through. My boat's on the other side of the island. Just ah, came to get some supplies before setting sail again, heheh..." the other two seemed to buy it, but Astrid still seemed suspicious.

"Sure. Go to Gobber's for any weapons or metal you might need, and look for Mulch and Bucket for food." Astrid pointed to the two buildings on the outskirt of the town before grabbing her two friends', if you could really call them that, and headed towards the town herself.

Hiccup stayed put until they were out of earshot, before letting out a breath he didn't realize he had been holding.

"Phew, that was close. Metal, huh? I can sure use that..." Hiccup weighed the possibilities of getting any metal, but decided to simply stick with food. He didn't have anything valuable enough for metal.

And Toothless will probably have my head if I get anything crazy like a sword.
