I Was There

A couple days later, Robin was in his guest room, getting ready to play the drums and rehearse some of Lynn's songs. Robin played a song on his phone, specifically the Jeopardy theme song. After that warmup, Robin looked over the list of songs that Lynn was best known for singing, whether they be original or covers. Lynn took the liberty of arranging specific drum sheet music for Robin to look over when playing the drums on her songs. To really prepare himself, Robin listened to the songs so that he could easily memorize them. Some of Lynn's most popular songs were... Crowbar To My Heart, Snatched Away (From Me Too Soon), Lightning Strike, Harleen, and Second Shock. Lynn had written Snatched Away and Lightning Strike when she was 17, and these were personal songs for her. Robin listened to those popular hits, understanding the meaning behind each and every one.

Robin then spent the next few hours looking at the sheet music and playing the drums to the exact rhythm of the songs, often listening to them for influence. Robin didn't hesitate to repeat the song so that he could get it right. It was by now 1:30 p.m., and Barbara decided to go back home on her lunch break to check up on Robin and see how he was doing. As she got into her apartment, she could hear Robin drumming away. She recognized what he was playing with the song in the background. It was Snatched Away. Babs wandered over to the guest room seeing Robin absorbed in playing the song. Lynn wasn't kidding, he was talented for sure. Robin soon finished playing the song, panting. Barbara clapped and said, "nice drum cover." Robin looked over and saw Babs there. She was wearing a short sleeved black shirt, a purple skirt, and close toed black heels, no socks or tights. "Oh hey Barbara," he said almost exhausted, "I didn't see you there."

"I just came in a few minutes ago," said Babs, "I'm on my lunch break. Wanted to see how you were doing." Robin put his drumsticks down and said, "I'm doing good." Suddenly, his stomach growled. "There's a sandwich shop in Burnside," said Barbara, "if you want, you can come with me to lunch there." Robin stood up and said, "that sounds great. Thanks." 20 minutes later, Babs and Robin were at Burnside Deli, Babs ate the chicken cobb and Robin ate the club ham. "So were you playing Snatched Away?" Barbara casually asked. "I was," confirmed Robin, "how'd you guess?"

"I've listened to Lynn play the song plenty of times," explained Babs, "plus I was there when she wrote it." After swallowing some of his sandwich, Robin asked, "you were? Do tell." As he ate more of his sandwich, Barbara continued, "it was around six or seven years ago. Lynn's boyfriend Jason was missing and we all thought he was dead. A week after the funeral, Lynn got struck by lightning. She was in a coma for five weeks. A lot of us were on edge during that time. Eventually, Lynn woke up, and her guardian Bruce had her take therapy to help with her mental health. I knew her guardian Bruce since he was a mutual friend of my father and I dated his foster son for a while. So I guess you could say I was a family friend, hence my connection to Jason and Lynn, and many of our other mutual friends. Anyway, Lynn's therapist suggested she write what she was coping with in song in order to therapeutically help her. And I was with Lynn when she wrote the lyrics to Snatched Away and when she composed the music. Writing Snatched Away and Lightning Strike helped Lynn cope with losing Jason and getting struck by lightning. And I was there for her when she read the lyrics and broke down crying the first time."

Robin nodded, impressed by Lynn's perseverance and overcoming her own personal hardships. Barbara twirled her straw around her drink and asked, "so what got you interested in becoming a freelance drummer?" Robin swallowed some of his sandwich and replied, "well I was originally supposed to be on Animaniacs after 2 years of negotiations between Amblin and The Kid's WB. At one point, they considered producing a spin-off with me and Freakazoid in which I would be his sidekick. But 1998 was gonna be the year I would officially star on Animaniacs. And then I got fired first day on the job. Turns out Kid's WB cancelled Animaniacs in favor of producing more episodes of Pokemon because it was easier and cheaper to make due to the English dub. But during the negotiation limbo, I was brought to England to star in some music videos that never got released. They were with Billie Piper, and these unreleased music videos were for Love Groove and I Dream."

"Hold up, you starred in music videos with Billie Piper? Billie Piper best known for playing Rose Tyler on Doctor Who?" Barbara interrupted. "Yeah," confirmed Robin, "but her manager decided to permanently shelve the music videos at the last minute. She and I never saw those videos ever again." Barbara nodded and said, "damn. That sucks. Sorry for interrupting, you can continue." Robin sipped his soda and said, "it's okay. I can understand if it sounds unbelievable. Anyway, while I was in the UK filming these unreleased music videos, I stumbled onto a drum set. I got curious and decided to play around with the drum set. Suddenly, I found that I was quite good at playing the drums. And after graduating from Acme Looniversity and a future in acting in Looney Tunes uncertain, I made myself a freelance drummer. And a second unit director on occasion." Barbara tilted her head and asked, "you've directed?"

"I mean, just for stuff like second unit and background shots," explained Robin, "although I did direct a few episodes of Jeopardy." Barbara nodded and said, "that is quite impressive." Robin smiled and said, "it sure is." Barbara placed her chin on her hands while leaning and said, "you're quite the multiple trick pony." Robin looked into Barbara's blue eyes and said, "well thank you Barbara. You're quite brilliant yourself." The two blushed at each other. And a crush on Barbara started to grow inside Robin. Whether she reciprocated his feelings, Robin didn't know.
