How To Make A Romantic Relationship With A Superhero Work

It was the Sunday after Robin had his talk with Lynn when the Ink-Blot dude was in the living room with Barbara. Robin was thinking about his feelings for Barbara, but he wasn't sure if he could make it work, him being a freelance drummer in Los Angeles and her being a vigilante superhero in Gotham City. He wasn't sure whether to confide in Bruce. But what about his son, Kevin? Kevin was just an ordinary guy who was in a romantic relationship with Supergirl, and yet he wasn't a vigilante superhero like his father. But even then, Kevin seemed like a cool guy. Robin then asked, "hey Babs, are you friends with Kevin on Facebook?"

"Yeah I'm friends with him," said Barbara, "I've been friends with him beyond Facebook of course. I met him when Dick and I were kids. He was 10 when Bruce gained legal guardianship of him and he moved to Gotham."

"Now how did that happen?" Robin asked. "His mother is Andrea Beaumont, otherwise known as the Phantasm," replied Barbara. "You mean that killer vigilante who had a grim reaper gimmick that was mistaken for Batman and scapegoated him for killing those two gangsters?" Robin asked. "That's the one," confirmed Barbara, "her father's former associate Arthur Reeves and a controversial news reporter found where Andrea and Kevin were living at and they publicly exposed Andrea as the Phantasm. She later on got arrested for her crimes." Robin's ears drooped down in sadness as he said, "that's a shame." Barbara nodded and said, "it was. She was the first person Bruce ever fell in love with. With one report, two lives were destroyed that day. And yet despite all that, Kevin has remained a kind and optimistic person. But I digress. Let me borrow your phone for a moment." Robin handed his cell phone to Barbara, and Barbara got on to his Facebook profile and looked up Kevin Wayne. Once she found the correct profile, she gave the phone back to Robin and said, "here you go."

"Thank you," said Robin as he sent a friend request to Kevin. Two minutes later, Kevin replied and accepted Robin's friend request. Robin smiled and then went on Facebook Messenger to reach out to Kevin. He messaged Kevin, "hey Kevin! How are you doing?" 20 seconds later, Kevin responded, "I'm doing pretty good, thanks for asking. And thanks for sending me a friend request. Glad to know I can befriend you. How are you and Babs doing?" Robin smiled and typed back, "we're doing pretty good. Are you busy tomorrow? I was wondering if I could hang out with you and talk, face to face. I'm quite old fashioned and I would love to talk to you face to face." Kevin texted back, "by all means, come on over to Wayne Manor. I'll text you the address. You can come over tomorrow afternoon." Kevin texted Robin the address to Wayne Manor, and the toon said to Barbara, "looks like I'll be meeting up with Kevin tomorrow." Babs smiled and said, "good to know. You'll like him."

The next day it was time for Robin to get to Wayne Manor. Robin decided to call an Uber to get to Wayne Manor since he had never been there before. Robin got into Uber and around 30 minutes later, he was at Wayne Manor. It looked gothic, but elegant. It was almost like something out of a Tim Burton movie.

"This place is a freaking castle... it makes my house look like a cheap apartment, which I got from Spielberg!" thought Robin as he wandered to the front door. He then knocked on the front door. Less than a minute later, an old man with balding white hair and a thin black mustache in a black tuxedo opened the door. He was six feet tall, towering over the toon. Robin looked up at the tall old man and raised his cap out of respect. "Um... Good afternoon sir," he said sheepishly. The old man looked at the toon, and then he said in an elegant and gentle voice, his accent very British, "oh hello there. You must be Miss Black's current drummer, Atticus Warner I presume?" His demeanor was like a grandfather figure. "Yes sir," said Robin, "Mr Wayne's son Kevin said I could come over to hang out."

"Ah yes, I remember now," said the old man, "do come in Mr Warner. Master Kevin is in the kitchen cooking. My name is Alfred Pennyworth, I am the Wayne family's butler. Master Bruce told me about you, and it's nice to meet you finally." Robin came into the manor and said, "thank you. It's nice to meet you too Alfred. Kevin cooks?" The two of them wandered around the manor and Alfred replied, "oh yes. Master Kevin is a talented cook. He's been so great at cooking since he was a child, it's practically his favorite hobby." Robin chuckled, "oh that's right, we established that in the last chapter." There was a pleasant smell of cinnamon and apples as if they were freshly baked, practically the smell of autumn. Robin could practically smell it, and he said, "my goodness... whatever Kevin is making smells absolutely gorgeous!" Alfred smiled and said, "indeed." Robin could also hear Queen singing Radio Gaga. They made it to the kitchen and saw Kevin taking out a baking tray of four baked apples that were stuffed with oats. He was wearing a long sleeved yellow button-down shirt with a mahogany sweater vest, blue pants and was in green socks, navy blue oven mitts to ensure he wouldn't burn his hands. Alfred cleared his throat and said "Master Kevin, your friend Mr Warner is here." Kevin turned around and saw Alfred, and he said, "thank you Alfred. Robin! Glad to see you were able to make it!" Alfred nodded and said to the young men while giving a warm smile, "I'll leave you two alone." And that's when Alfred left the room.

"How are you doing today Kevin?" Robin asked. "I'm doing pretty good, thanks for asking," said Kevin, "what about you?" He put two baked apples onto one plate for himself, and two baked apples onto another plate. "Kind of intimidated by this place," said Robin, "it's practically a castle." Kevin smiled and said, "you get used to it after a while. Let's go to the dining room table so we can snack on these baked apples." Robin took a plate and as they went to the dining room table, Robin asked, "so you made these yourself?" Kevin nodded and enthusiastically said, "I sure did. This is an old recipe from the Great Depression." As they sat down on two dining room chairs, Robin joked, "I'd probably make these for the smell." Kevin chuckled, "I can message you the recipe later on." He sliced two of the baked apples on each respective plate in half to make it easy to eat. Robin took a slice, scooping in enough oats, and once he ate it, he was amazed by the very sweet and tart taste. After swallowing some of his baked apple, Robin then said, "so Kevin... Your girlfriend Kara... She's Supergirl, right?" Kevin swallowed some of his baked apple and said, "that's right. I'm in a romantic relationship with Supergirl. Which frankly makes Superman and my dad family." He sighed, thinking of Kara. Robin could tell by his face that Kevin was still in love with her.

"How did you two meet?" Robin asked. "I was 15 going on 16 when Kara's rocketship crashlanded to Gotham," replied Kevin, "by the time I was 14, I had mastered the Kryptonian language and the Kryptonian alphabet. Dad and Superman taught me how to translate it to English." Robin moved his head back a little and he asked, "hold up, you know Kryptonian?" Kevin nodded and confirmed, "yeah I know it. When Kara was brought to Earth, Superman and my dad knew it would be a logical idea for Kara to learn how to speak English, so Supes asked me to tutor Kara. I taught her how to translate the Kryptonian alphabet into the normal English alphabet and how to speak sentences and taught her English grammar. She and I were practically the same age, and I developed a crush on her as we bonded. Barbara and I were the first people her age that Kara ever befriended. I remember I was in the middle of my sophomore year when Kara became Supergirl. I thought she looked amazing. By the time I was 18, I realized I had romantic feelings for her, and Kara felt the same. We've been together ever since." Robin listened while eating, and then he asked, "how do you make it work? Dating a superhero when you're not a superhero yourself?"

"I remember asking Lois Lane that exact question when I turned to her for dating advice," chuckled Kevin, "I felt she was the right person to turn to since she knew what it was like to be in a romantic relationship with someone like Kara. Y'know, her husband being Kryptonian and all. The superhero life has never been for me. I think what makes a romantic relationship with a superhero work when you're a non-powered being is to listen and be understanding. Always show compassion and support for the one you love, whether they be human, metahuman, alien, hybrid, or even a toon like you. And I've looked back at the mistakes both of my parents made as Batman and the Phantasm, and I've learned that a relationship should always be honest, it should never be built on lies. When I was starting my relationship with Kara, it wasn't easy. But she was always honest with me, always letting me know if she would be late for something due to being held up fighting a kaiju monster or something like that. I've been there for her during her worst moments, and during her best moments. When there were times that Kara associated something with Krypton, like the day she and her cousin lost their planet, I'm always there for her to comfort her. Mother's Day is pretty rough for both of us if you catch my drift."

Robin listened and said, "guys like you and Jason seem to have it down when it comes to dating powered beings. Can I admit something to you? You promise not to tell Kara, Babs, or your dad?" Kevin looked at Robin and said in a serious tone of voice, "you have my word that I won't tell anyone else." Robin looked left and right and then he said in a nervous voice, "I... I think I have romantic feelings for Barbara." Kevin gave a slight look of surprise and asked, "you do?" Robin nodded in confirmation, his cheeks red from blushing. "Have you told anyone else?" Kevin asked. "No." Robin said shyly. Kevin leaned on his chair and asked, "how long have you had a crush on Barbara?" Robin rubbed his right arm and shyly admitted, "ever since Lynn introduced me to her. I just think Barbara is amazing, brilliant, so smart, really helpful, I feel like she understands me, and she's also so gorgeous! I think she's more beautiful than Lynn, there, I said it! And it doesn't hurt that I like giving her foot rubs on occasion..." He blushed at that last part even more, like a teenage boy ashamed to admit he had a fetish like that. Kevin smiled and said, "oh don't worry, I can relate to how you feel. Especially that last part." He winked at Robin. "How should I tell Barbara my feelings for her?" Robin asked. "Just tell her face to face first of all," advised Kevin, "be honest and kind with her. Be yourself. And remember what I told you when it comes to dating a hero. Especially the last part. A relationship should never be built on lies." Robin smiled and said, "thanks Kevin. I'm glad to know I have you for a friend to confide in." Kevin smiled and said, "I'm glad to have you for a friend too, Robin."
