The Moon who Fell in Love

One night, the moon gazed down at her blue world. The sun, her brother, had already set. The sun rested preparing for the next day. Content filled the moon as the water below laid still and at peace. The blue liquid soaked up every last moonbeam. Moving in the sky, she cast her moonlight onto an island down below.

Out of her beams, a girl formed. Her hair was black as night, her skin as white as the moon itself. The dress that adorned her body was blue like the ocean that rolled onto the sandy beach where she sat. Her eyes were dark onyx. The crisp wind blew her hair behind her. It sparkled with stars. From a distance, it looked like a million diamonds danced in her hair.

When the moon was in her human form, she went by the name Cordila. Splashing disturbed her peaceful water. Waves washed over her feet. Standing, Cordila watched as a merman with a tail that resembled that of a white-beaked dolphin jumped out of the water. A dorsal fin protruding from his back. His black scales and white streaks glimmered in her moonlight as he jumped once more.

Lifting her porcelain hands to her chest, the moon felt her heart skip a beat. All her life, Cordila had never felt anything such as this. As the merman jumped playfully in the air, he noticed the human sitting on the sandy beach. Curiosity pulled him into a warm embrace. He swam up to the island to talk with her. After talking for a few moments, the two began to fall in love. The merman grabbed her hand and promised to return to her every night. Cordila agreed to do the same.

Once she watched the dolphin tail disappear back under the waves, she returned to her moon. Sleep pulled at her eyelids. The moon set as she dreamed about the dolphin tailed merman. Excitement flooded through her. She couldn't wait to meet him the next evening. Cordila's eyes shone as she awoken the next night. Her moon resting in the same spot as the night before, a silver ramp appeared between her and the island. With a leap in her step, she descended and sat on the beach.

Cordila sat there for hours. With each passing hour, her excitement faded into disappointment. The moon tilted her head back. Her eyes gazed into the heavenly body of the her father above. Thoughts wandered through her mind. Had he stood her up or had he meet some cruel fate in the deadly depths of the ocean? After a few more hours passed, Cordila went back to her moon.

The moon set that night. Rising the next evening, she was filled with renewed hope. However, the dolphin tail didn't appear that night. Several months passed. The dolphin-tail still hadn't come back for her. Depression began to seep through. The next night, Cordila refused to raise her moon. Her brother pleaded with her to share her light. She turned away from him.

Begging for help, he lifted his eyes towards their Father. The heavenly bodies told her that if she would rise, then her brother would stay with her. Cordila reluctantly agreed.

The moon raised into her place, however, the sun did not set. He blocked her light from the life below. Tears cascaded down her cheek. Dropping her gaze to the water below, tears hit the surface creating waves that disturbed its stillness.

Coming into view, a fishing boat caught her eye. She watched as the men on the ship through a net into her waters. The moon sighed. She hated when fishermen disturbed her ocean. Yet, she was too broken-hearted to do anything about it. The sound of a bell ringing reached her ears. She watched the men as they turned a wheel, bringing in the net. Anger filled her heart. There in the net was her beloved dolphin tail.

A silver beam shined down on the waves. Cordila descended from the beam and landed on the water. The dolphin-tail stopped struggling once he saw the girl. Crossing her hands in front of her, Cordila's eyes turned blue. Flinging her arms outwards, the waves came up at her sides. She rushed forwards on the waves. She moved her hands gracefully. She moved the water with each movement. Using the waves, she cut the dolphin tail free from his prison. The men on the boat stood back gazing in fear.

Cordila formed the waves behind her once more. She circled her hands outwards before finally bringing them together and pushing them palms outwards. Waves overcame her. They continued past her and fell upon the ship. Plunged it and the men there on to their watery graves. Breathing hard, she looked at the direction the dolphin tail had swam. She noticed he had washed up on the beach. He laid on his back on the sand with his tail in the water.

Gliding over to him, she sat down on her knees behind his head. Touching him tenderly, she pulled his head on to her lap. His breathing was labored. Through her fingertips, she could sense his heartbeat was growing weaker. She knew if they were ever to have a life together then she must save him by giving up something she would never be able to get back. Looking up at her father and brother, the moon kissed the dolphin tail with all the passion she had. Her skin began to glow. Her dress tightened around her legs.

Opening his eyes, the dolphin smiled saw her above him. He sat up. The girl smiled at him and jumped in the water. Picking her head up, she motioned for him to follow. The dolphin-tail smiled as he followed the moon. As she swam happily with her new tail and breathed with her new gills, Cordila had forgotten about her oath to her Father. Her oath to her Father was such, as long as she controlled the moon and waves, she would protect the waves from the evils therein. The day she gave up her immortality was the day the ocean would be tainted with evil.
