Small Talk and Salad

Robin

Silence surrounds the table; Fox looks up from her meal, eyes meeting, and I wonder what she's going to say next.

"Can you pass the salt?" Fox asks.

"No."

"Rude." She responds as Arlo elbows me in the ribs.

That has been a glimpse into what our dinner this evening has looked like. I still cannot believe I let Arlo convince me to do this. I'm social, but a nap sounds good to me right now.

Approaching the two ladies was a bit awkward. Letting Arlo do the talking, I tried to not look like a child following their mom. Eden, the mystery girl who is Fox's sister and the one that Arlo was eager to meet, generously let us sit with them. The smile Arlo flashed after sitting down across from her could have blinded me.

At first, I stayed polite. Feeling Fox's confused glare upon me kinda of kept my behavior in line. Deciding to put whatever interaction we had before behind us and being polite was my new plan. That didn't last long though. I just can't help my big mouth.

The simple conversation continues throughout the night. I keep myself reserved by digging through my salad. Why did I choose salad, I hate salad.

The three others are chatting about the people who live on their floor. Eden's story interests me when she explains how one girl got their whale noise machine taken when it was too loud. The feeling of gratefulness sweeps over me because that sounds awful to me.

Arlo then adds to the topic, "My floormates aren't too bad, the one I have to worry about is this one right here." He then nudges my shoulder. I shoot him a glare. "The amount of candles he owns is a bit alarming," Arlo adds and chuckles at his own words.

"Do you collect candles?" Fox asks and Eden continues, "Oh! Or do you use them for romantic reasons?""I plan on sacrificing Arlo, that's why I have them," I say sarcastically. So what if I like candles? It covers up the scent of Arlo's dirty socks.

Arlo choked on his drink after I wished death upon him. Eden passes him a napkin while Fox says, "At first I thought you were just a bad comedian, but now I'm 75% sure you're a villain."

My mind freezes for a bit. Would I be considered a villain because of what I'm doing for my father? Anxiety grows deep into my stomach but I push it away and turn back to reality."We'll I'm just naturally terrifying aren't I?"

"Nope, so I guess you would make a terrible villain." She says with a little grin.A bell chimes across the dining room. Footsteps sound behind me of a worker asking us to leave soon, as the dinner is closing. We say our goodbyes to each other. Arlos was rather long while I gave a soundless wave to the sisters and finally left.

The next morning.

My hands are sweaty and my heart rate is slowly increasing as I hold this piece of paper. Earlier I randomly decided to visit the mail room after a class. The mail room has many walls covered in boxed shelves. As I walk through the halls, I see that everyone else's mailboxes are filled with goods that are probably from family and friends.

At the end, I see my box, with one single envelope. I debate for a second whether or not I should take it, already knowing it's from my father. I have gotten a few other letters and I have written a few updates myself as well. Hearing from my father is never fun so I consider not taking the note.A group of royals enter the hall. They happily talk while receiving their mail. I feel awkward being empty-handed now. Sighing, I take the single letter out of my box. I don't dare look at my father's name on the paper as I walk out of the room.

Eventually, I get back to my room. I've learned Arlo's class schedule so I know he is not in here. I stare down at the letter I placed on my desk. After pacing around the room and working myself up, I opened the letter.
