Chapter Eight ~ Kingsbury Accent

Another day arrived, and with it, another pile of mail.

And yet still, no letter from Otto.

Holly allowed Robin to sort through the mail every day, hoping he'd find a letter from his older brother among the stack of letters and papers. However, despite the daily onslaught of mail,  word from his brother had yet to appear. A few times, Robin was tempted to open some of the numerous letters that had arrived at Sunshine Acres, as they continually piqued his curiosity as to why Holly daily received significantly more letters than Robin ever had while living in London. For even if every person in the town of Adel wrote to her daily, the letters still wouldn't amount to the pile that sat by the fireplace each day.

What puzzled Robin even further was that most of the letters bore no specific address, and were merely labeled "To: Miss Holly Dumas" or "To: The Crimson Crow", names which Robin assumed must be more of her nicknames. These letters lacked a return address, and as Robin had deduced that they must have been sent to her by sorcerers, using the same spell Holly had used for Robin's letter to find his brother.

Holly's only rule for Robin was to toss the letters into the fire or give them to Cookie to chew up after he was done. She claimed none of them contained anything of necessity and refused to read any of them. Despite his curiosity about their contents, Robin respected this. But he still felt his hands crawl with temptation each time he looked through the piles.

Cookie was quite efficient as a mail shredder, but in the end, Robin found it easiest to throw the mail into the fire. The small pieces of mail she left behind were difficult to clean from the floorboards, as the magical flooring didn't recognize them as dirt or dust, which forced Robin to sweep the house's floors for the first time since arriving at Sunshine Acres.

After finishing reviewing yesterday's mail at the breakfast table, Robin sighed and walked over to the hearth to toss the latest pile into the fire.

"Would you like to come into town with us today?" Holly offered, between bites of her breakfast, as she watched him toss the letters into the fire. "You could visit the post office to check if your brother's letter got lost. Or, try sending word to your family to see if they've heard from him."

"Yeah, come to town with us today, Robin!" Jo chimed in excitedly, sitting up in her chair. "I told everyone in my class that you have a Kingsbury accent, and none of them believes me. I need you to prove it to them!"

"What Kingsbury accent?" Robin teased, his mouth widening as he shook his head at the young girl, attempting his best Great Plains accent.

Holly let out a muffled laugh as she choked on her breakfast toast, breaking into a coughing fit.

"HAH!" Jo burst out laughing, falling back into her chair. "Nice try, but nobody's going to believe you with... whatever that was," she retorted, waving her fork at Robin and shaking her head.

Robin glared at both of them, making Holly laugh harder and worsening her coughing.

With a disappointed click of his tongue, Robin quickly refilled Holly's glass with water while shooting her a glare, which she accepted guiltily between coughs.

Robin could admit his impression might not have been the best, but to have such a reaction made him realize he might be worse than he thought.

"I'll work on it," Robin said, feeling slightly defeated. "I'll speak in my best Great Plains accent from now on for practice."

"Please don't," Holly said with a laugh, still recovering from her coughing fit. "I love your accent."

Jo covered her mouth as she tried to hide a knowing smile, raising her eyebrows at Holly as she glanced at Robin.

"I just mean," Holly continued hastily, raising her hands defensively, as her ears turned a few shades of red, "I think it makes you unique. I would love to have an accent like yours."

"Well, you do have a unique accent," Robin replied, his own face feeling strangely warm at her compliment as he turned to put his dishes in the sink. "If you were in London, I'd find your accent very intriguing."

"Intriguing...hmm?" Jo mimicked in a Kingsbury accent, leaning out of her chair and into Holly's face, causing her mentor to reel back with a threatening glare.

Holly laughed nervously as she pushed the child back into her seat.

"Thank you, Robin.... I'm sure if you stick around here long enough, when you return to London, you'll be thankful to never hear an accent like mine again," Holly replied, returning her attention to her breakfast.

"No! You better not, Robin!" Jo said passionately, her eyes wide with worry as she turned towards Robin, "Because one day I'm going to visit you in London, and you'll have to hear this accent again when I do."

Robin chuckled at the young girl. "That sounds good, Jo. However, you should still practice your Kingsbury accent for when you visit. I'd say your skills are just as lacking as mine."

Jo shook her head, scoffing at his criticism.

"Pishposh and hogwash, Not-Pear-Man," she replied in her awful Kingsbury accent.

"You're only proving my point with... whatever that was," Robin said, mimicking her statement from moments ago.

"Hey!" Jo shouted, half-offended.

Holly laughed as she stood and exited the kitchen, shaking her head at the two's playful banter. "Play nice, both of you."

"She started it," Robin squealed jokingly in a high-pitched voice, once again imitating Jo's Great Plains accent and tilting his head in her direction.

"If neither of you finishes it, I'll be leaving for town without either of you," Holly replied, doing her own best attempt at a Kingsbury accent, as she headed up the stairs, shooting Robin a playful glare.

Robin blinked and let out a surprised laugh, Holly's Kingburry accent somehow managing to be worse than Jo's.

"Yes, Miss Holly,"

"Right-o, Miss Holly,"

Robin and Jo chorused in their respective fake accents, their simultaneous mimicry causing the small girl to burst into such a laugh that she fell from her chair laughing, needing Robin's help back into her seat to finish her breakfast.
