Chapter Eight - Kingsbury Accent
Another day arrived, and with it came another pile of mail—yet still, no letter from Otto.
Holly had let Robin sort through the mail every day, hoping he'd find a letter from his older brother, but each day brought a stack of letters and papers, none from Otto. A few times, he was tempted to open some of the numerous letters addressed to "Miss Holly." It struck Robin as curious that Holly received significantly more letters than he ever did while living in London, despite the vast difference in status and population between the two locations. Robin wondered how it was possible— even if every person in the town of Adel wrote to her daily, the letters still wouldn't amount to the pile that sat by the fireplace each day.
What puzzled him further was how most of the letters bore no specific address, merely labeled to "Miss Holly" or "Witch of the Crimson Crow" (which Robin assumed was another one of her nicknames), and with no return address either. As Robin examined them, he deduced that these letters must have been sent to her using the same spell Holly had used for Robin's letter to his brother, which meant they were sent by other sorcerers.
Holly's only rule for him while sorting through the mail was to toss it into the fire or give it to Cookie to chew up after he was done. She claimed nothing was necessary in any of them and refused to read any of them. Despite his curiosity about their contents, Robin respected this. He found it easiest to throw them in the fire. Cookie was quite efficient as a mail shredder, but the small pieces of mail she left behind were difficult to clean from the floorboards, as the magical flooring didn't recognize them as dirt or dust. Forcing Robin to sweep the floors for the first time since arriving at Sunshine Acres.
After finishing reviewing yesterday's mail at the breakfast table, Robin sighed and walked over to the hearth to toss the pile into the fire.
"Would you like to come into town with us today?" Holly offered between bites of her breakfast. "You could visit the post office to check if your brother's letter got lost. You could also try sending word to your family to see if they've heard from him."
"Yeah, come to town with us today, Robin!" Jo chimed in excitedly. "I told everyone in my class that you have a Kingsbury accent, and none of them believe me. I need you to prove it to them!"
"What Kingsbury accent?" Robin teased, attempting his best Great Plains accent.
"HAH!" Jo burst out laughing. "Nice try, but nobody's going to believe you with... whatever that was," she retorted, waving her fork at Robin and shaking her head.
Holly choked on her muffin, breaking into a coughing fit. Robin glared at her, making her laugh harder and worsening her coughing. Robin quickly refilled Holly's glass with water, which she accepted gratefully between coughs.
Robin could admit his impression might not have been the best, but to have such a reaction made him realize he might be worse at it than he thought.
"I'll work on it," Robin said, defeated. "I'll speak in my best Great Plains accent from now on for practice."
"Please don't," Holly said with a laugh, still recovering from her coughing fit. "I love your accent."
There was a brief silence. Robin chuckled and lowered his head to hide a blush he felt on his face.
Jo tried to hide a smile, raising her eyebrows at Holly and glancing at Robin.
"I just mean," Holly said, suddenly nervous, "I think it makes you unique. I would love to have an accent like yours."
"Well, you do have a unique accent," Robin said, getting up to put his dishes in the sink. "If you were in London, I'd find your accent very intriguing."
"Intriguing..." Jo mimicked in a Kingsbury accent.
Holly laughed nervously, shooting a look at Jo.
"Thank you, Robin. But I'm sure if you stick around here long enough when you return to London, you'll be thankful to never hear an accent like mine again," Holly said, returning her attention to her breakfast.
"No! You better not, Robin!" Jo said passionately. "Because one day I'm going to visit you in London, and you'll have to hear this accent again when I do."
Robin chuckled, smiling at the young girl. "That sounds good, Jo, but you should still practice your Kingsbury accent just in case. I'd say your skills are just as lacking as mine."
Jo shook her head. "Pishposh and hogwash, Not Pear Man," she said in her awful accent.
"You're only proving my point with... whatever that was," Robin said, mimicking her.
"Hey!" Jo said, sounding half-amused, half-offended.
Holly laughed as she exited the kitchen, shaking her head at the two's playful banter. "Play nice, both of you."
"She started it," Robin said jokingly, imitating Jo's Great Plains accent and tilting his head in her direction.
"If neither of you finishes it, I'll be leaving for town without either of you," Holly said, heading up the stairs.
"Yes, Miss Holly," Robin and Jo chorused before Robin teasingly glared at Jo, causing her to burst into laughter.
