Part 10 - The Moment Before

I was peeking out the tent with Katlin. "They're really good." I said.

"Not as good as us." She said, a smile on her face. "I'm going to talk to Angie." She said, leaving me with a kiss on the cheek. I kept watching, when Amy came up behind me.

"Hey Amy." I said.

"Hi Roberta." She peeked out with me, but she looked more distracted. "Hey, Roberta?" I turned my attention to her. "I wanted to thank you. For giving me this opportunity. To be a cheerleader, to reinvent myself and become this new person. Everyone loves this version of me."

I chuckled. "I do my best."

"I mean it. I've always looked up to you." She said. "And I-" She cut herself off. She mouthed the word, "Katlin," before laughing softly, almost sadly. "Never mind. I forgot. See you after."

"You too." I said. I watched Amy depart somberly, when Emma came up behind me.

"She looks depressed. You play with her heart, too?" She said.

"No, of course not."

Emma was silent. "You really have hurt a lot of people. Me, Amy-"

"I didn't hurt Amy."

"How do you know you haven't? You also didn't realize you hurt me." She said. A few seeds of doubt planted in my head. My breathing quickened, propelling my anxiety. Emma sensed this, and started to fertalize the seeds of doubt.

"Your actions have degraded our teamwork. If we fail this, it's going to be all your fault. Everyone will hate and blame you. You'll loose everything, and Roberta Lane will disappear." She said. My hand gripped the cloth of the tent tighter.

She smirked. "If you can't handle this, you should just leave. "

"I can handle this!" I shouted. "I'm captain! I'm Roberta! I'm Roberta Lane, and you can't take that away from me!"

We were silent for a while, when the announcer piped up. "Give a round of applause to The Crestwick Commoners!" The crowd was cheering. Katlin and Amy came up behind me, holding their pom-poms.

I took a deep breath, but it was no use. My breathing was heavy, anxiety fully in play. It was consuming my head, and I couldn't think straight. Force through it Roberta, force through it. I thought. I ran out onto the field, ready to perform.
