Chapter 5
~Casey Halls~
I got up at 6 this morning. I'm driving to Miami, I don't have the money to fly.
Locking my door, I head to the elevator. Some of my neighbors are heading off to work whilst I am driving home to a wedding I honestly don't want to attend but it's been awhile since I've visited my family so I need this trip plus it's been awhile since I went on vacation.
The first thing I do once I turn on my car, turn up my heat. It gets so cold here.
When I get to the main road I'm automatically hit with New York traffic. This is why I planned to leave early. Once I escape from this I'm home free.
Now all I have to do is make a quick stop and I'll be on my way.

After grabbing some snacks, I head back to my car but not before bumping into an older woman.
"Oh my goodness, I am so sorry."
"It's quite alright."
"No it's not. I am deeply sorry, you could've been hurt." The older woman smiles mischievously.
"Your right, I could've fallen. I'm a old woman, my body is failing, oh my heart it's beating so fast!" I instantly felt so guilty.
"Is there something I can do maybe there's someone I could call?" The woman begin to think whilst looking at my car.
"Going somewhere?" I looked over to my car.
"Yes ma'am."
"Where you headed?" I have no clue why any of this is her business, but I can't be rude I did almost knock her over.
"Miami."
"What a coincidence? I'm headed there too. You wouldn't mind giving me a lift would ya? I'm afraid I missed the bus, and don't have enough money to pay for one later tonight. But since your willing to help me, you could give me a ride." Unbelievable! There's no way I'm giving some stranger a ride in my car. Especially if it means driving her all the way to Miami with little cash.
"Ma'am I am afraid I can't help you. You will simply have to call someone else." I started walking back to my car.
"Wait you can't just leave a little old lady like me out on the streets of New York, what if I get robbed?"
"Call the police." I unlocked the passenger door to throw in the bags of snacks.
"Well... what if... what if I get in trouble?"
I look back at her. "Someone like you would cause trouble not suffer from it."
"Please help me, I'm desperate."
"If you were desperate, you wouldn't have missed the bus the first time. Plus if you're traveling, why only bring little money? Hmm" With that, I climb into my car and start it up.
"Please Miss, I need your help." I quickly glance back over to her. She wears a tired and pained expression. Why she's tired? I don't ask. Why she's pained? I don't know, but I do know that I have an agenda and babysitting old ladies isn't on the list.
I put the car into drive and pull out the parking space I was in. Not looking back I drive away from the bus station.
Though something tells me to look back. In the rear view mirror, the old lady is sitting on the curb. Her face buried in her hands, her shoulders slumped in distress.
She looks exactly like how I did was I first moved to New York. I got lost and no one would help me. I asked everyone in sight. Some guy told me: This is New York, you think we would stop our lives to help someone as lowly as you. Go back home kid.
I quickly make a U-turn and head back hoping the old lady is still by the curb. I wasn't going to become those New Yorkers. I was gonna help this woman, because she needs me and who knows I might need her.
