Sirius and Remus came to a food court for their second meal of the day, which actually wasn't good because night was already nearing. Sirius still claimed that he was a 'growing man' even though he stopped growing in height at sixteen and needed food. Remus, on the other hand, would usually nibble on certain parts of his dish or just take extremely small portions.
"Alright then, I'm starving." Sirius said after he, like always, pulled out Remus' chair for him and then sat down I'm his own.
"You ate a whole cookie and a family sized packet of crisps not even three hours ago." Remus shuffled to get more comfortable in his chair.
"Your point?" Sirius grinned. It wasn't five minutes until an old, tanned man walked by, a scowl plastered on to his face.
"Fags." He spat and shook his head. He was about to walk away but an angry Remus caused him to stop.
"Oh, and I could call you a child predator or pervert because I know you don't I? I totally have every right to assume. Plus, what does it even matter what sexuality both of us are anyway? Are two blokes not allowed to eat dinner together without being bad mouthed by strangers? Fucking hell." Remus ranted, his fingers itching to scratch something as he usually wasn't used to speaking to strangers like that in public. The man shook his head, fuming, and walked away.
"Well, damn, Remmy." Sirius was still looking in the direction the man walked off in. He was touched by how passionately Remus talked about it and he truly knew that Remus didn't mind. That made him realise that liked Remus even more.
"It's 2018, are people still not alright with the idea that it's not a fucking crime to love someone?" Remus breathed heavily out of his nose. If he couldn't make himself happy, he'd make other people instead.
"It's just like that, I guess." Sirius was about to carry on but a waiter came by and asked what they wanted.
"Sunday roast please with corn on the cob and extra mash? Remus?" Sirius said then looked at Remus.
"A regular salad..." He was about to stop there but then he saw the look on Sirius' face which so clearly read 'you need to get way more' so he did, after having a battle with himself, "With tomato soup and bread please?" The man walked away with his notepad. Sirius was still giving Remus that look.
"Tomato soup is filling as fuck. I swear."
"Hmm, you sure?" Remus nodded, "Fine. But the way you talked to that man, jeez, that could've brought tears to an extremely sexy man's eyes if... Well, if he wasn't taught to be a robot who's not allowed to cry." Sirius bit the inside of his cheek. His mum and dad would always press hot knives to his skin and force him not to yell or cry, but even when he learnt not to do such things, they still did it. His younger brother, Regulus, was never treated so brutally, but would be slapped or kicked for the littlest things. Sirius felt like that was the worst torture and he would never tolerate it, even if he knew it would lead starvation.
"Sirius, you don't have to deal with them anymore. You're free and so is Regulus. What your parents did was despicable. Honestly brutal. You're so mentally strong it's actually scary, I wouldn't ever be able to do that. I wouldn't be able to live without crying, as depressing as it may sound. You've danced on thin ice for long enough. Let the bad memories die and make your parents pissed by doing whatever the fuck you want and shagging a bloke." Remus smiled towards the end.
"Why can't you let the memories die too then? That haunts my dreams much more." Sirius said it so softly that it was almost a whisper. He couldn't hold it much longer, he needed Remus to know that he's not there in the dark pits alone.
What Sirius said took Remus completely by surprise. The first bit was already too large to wrap around his head, but the second bit was even bigger.
"You- you know you don't mean that." Remus stumbled on his words. He knew Sirius didn't mean that. It just never happened to him. No one said they cared in such a tone. Even Remus' therapist said it in such a dead way that it seemed synthetic. Fake.
"I really do though, Moony. You're my best mate," Sirius cringed because he knew that was quickly wanting more, "and, well quite frankly, feeling shit is shit so knowing that someone so important to me is feeling that way isn't really something I want to know. I want to help you." Remus didn't know how to react. He didn't no whether to cry or reach over the table to hug Sirius or just just stay quiet.
"I- thank you, Sirius. I would hug you, but then the table would jab in the stomach and I would die, but really, thanks."
"No problem." Sirius saw the waiter coming back with their food so he unfolded his tissue and put it on his lap. It was an old habit of his as ever since he was small, his parents wouldn't give him any food if he didn't do it in an elegant way or just forgot completely.
"Your food, gentlemen." He put down the food on the table, "You can get drinks from over there." He pointed at a drink machine.
"Alright, thank you." Remus smiled falsely at the waiter who then walked away. He always struggled to smile properly when he was talking to anybody who worked in food courts or restaurants, he never really knew why.
"You know what I just realised, we're not going to have a home cooked meal for a long time." Sirius said, a piece of chicken dangling from his fork.
"And that, dear Sirius, is why I was just going to get a salad, because you can never go wrong with salad."
"Unless your on Kitchen Nightmares." Sirius pointed out.
"WHERE'S THE LAMB SAUCE?!" Remus laughed. The amount of times Sirius, Remus, James and Peter had huddled up on the sofa to watch whole seasons of Kitchen Nightmares would worry people because they'd think their eyes would've melted. Peter would always fall asleep in the first half hour, then James would join him four hours later with his head resting on Sirius' shoulder, so it would just be Remus and Sirius for the rest of the night. But always, when dawn was starting to arise, Sirius and Remus would both fall in to a light slumber, their bodies breathing at the exact same seconds and their fingers merely brushing, though neither of them knew.
Sirius started downing his food quickly. There was two mashes on his plate; one sweet potato and the other regular. Sirius personally preferred the sweet potato one, so that was smeared on to his chicken and complimented with his Yorkshire pudding.
Remus' red soup was topped with a single coriander leaf and the plate the bowl was on was decorated with slices of bread all around it. His salad was placed in an entirely new bowl with cherry tomato halves placed in a sort of star shape on top.
"Would you have been disappointed if you just got a salad?"
"Very."
Sirius and Remus had just left the food court and were now walking back to the car.
"Wait, where are we going to sleep?" Sirius stopped in his tracks.
