Remus sat on the edge if his bed, eyebrows furrowed. Sirius Black had just told him about this idea to go on a road trip and though it took a lot of convincing, Remus agreed. He phoned his mum, Hope Lupin, about it and she seemed more excited about it than he was, but his mum was always like that. All the possible bad things that could happen were filling up every inch of the room, crouching down and polishing their skin slicing axes. He looked down at his unzipped trunk, clothes spilling out of it. Maybe this wouldn't be a good idea, not that he even thought it would be to begin with. He'd just have to tell Sirius that he wasn't up to it and he just had to go alone, but then the imagined look of disappointment on Sirius' face overwhelmed him.
"Fuck it." Remus whispered angrily, zipping up his trunk and grabbing a cabin suitcase. He piled other necessary needs in to his bag, well, maybe not all of them were necessary. I mean, sun cream in Britain? You nearly never need that. He picked up a random something off his bed side table and when he brought it up to his eyes, the world seemed to stop. It was his dad. His dad, him and his mother. Altogether. As a family. Remus remembered every sin his dad made, from kicking a harmless dog to strangling his mother. He was only seven when he watched his mother being abused by his dad, and it broke him to such an extent that nothing would be able to seal the menacing crack staining his mind. His dad was a horrible, horrible person. And now he was dead. He drink drove and one particular Saturday, it was his last. Remus always said he wished his dad would just leave, but when it happened, it didn't seem real. It was like any second he would just wake up in bed in a pool of his own sweat, but the older he got, the more he realised that it was reality. The ghost of his father followed him everywhere, he was certain. Remus heard his phone buzz multiple times before he decided to pick it up. He had three texts from Lily, and he assumed it was urgent.
Lily: hey, sorry if your busy or something, but james is ill and he needs some paracetamol and i cannot leave him alone in the state that he's in.
Lily: but fr, i struggle to leave him alone with harry anyway.
Lily: can you pwetty pwease go fetch some medicine? i'll pay you when you come by.
Remus planned out his sentence in his head before he typed, carefully placing his fingers in correct positions.
Remus: yeah, don't worry about the money. it shouldn't be that expensive, and trust me, i also wouldn't trust james with a child. he'll stick him to the wall or something dumb like that.
Remus slung on a clean, maroon hoodie and swapped his joggers for jeans. Even though it would only be a five minute walk altogether, he couldn't help but feel eyes on him and hear the disgusted whispers flying out of everyone's mouth.
"Sirius, James is ill and I need to get him medicine so try not to... blow up the house or something." Remus said, pulling on his black vans. It was really his only prized possession, those shoes. His pride and joy, some could say.
"I'm not six, blowing up the house! That's such an amateur thing to do. I'll send the house to the moon instead and then blow it up, along with the moon." Sirius nodded, satisfied, and Remus inhaled and walked out of the door.
A light breeze threaded in and out of the trees, in between humans and swept past traffic lights. The sky dripped grey and subtle clouds sailed across. Splatters of rain littered the floor and Remus' shoulders but he didn't put his hood up. Whenever he walked in the rain, he always just felt this pit in his stomach that would weigh him down and make him feel like trash for the rest of the day. The vibrant blue corner shop stood right next to a drug dealer's house, Remus only knew that because once they had tried to give him some marijuana in return of a night at their place. Remus, of course, refused, but never once spoke up about the situation. Remus reached the door of the shop and pushed the door open. It wasn't packed, but one person caught his eye out of the four. Thomas Brink. The same person who mocked and tormented Remus for too, too long during Hogwarts. Thomas saw Remus too, and he winked. Taking a deep breath, Remus took a step forward and turned to the left, towards all the medicine. Light footsteps pattered behind him, making the feel on nervousness rise in his body like an illness. He resisted the urge to turn around in fear of him finding someone he'd rather not.
"Ahh, Remus." A husky voice breathed from behind him, placing they're hand on Remus' backside and slightly squeezing it. Remus hated the feeling immediately and ended up whipping round, something he was trying to avoid. He knew the voice and face all too familiarly.
Thomas Brink.
