Chapter 5
"Which way?" Tim asks, getting into the car after loading the luggage.
"That way." Avi giggles pointing up the road.
"Now you're getting the hang of it." Tim laughs as he starts the car and pulls out of the parking lot.
They had taken several donuts from the hotel's complimentary breakfast and was eating their breakfast as they drove.
"You have powdered sugar in your whiskers." Avi laughs as he reaches over to try and knock the sugar out of Tim's beard.
Their eyes meet for a brief moment before Tim looks back to the road.
"Well, it's not easy driving with one hand and eating a powdered donut with the other." Tim smiles, eyeing the road.
"It seems to be getting colder. Do you have any idea where we are?" Avi asks.
"Not sure. Maybe Oregon?" Tim answers as he turns on the heat.
"Maybe we should have headed southeast. I don't think I even have a coat." Avi says looking out at the slate-colored skies.
"Nows a fine tell to tell me considering I think I just saw a snowflake." Tim chuckles. "Would you complain about a coat from a second-hand store?"
"If it keeps me warm, I don't care where it comes from." Avi smirks. "Besides, beggars can't be choosy."
"I've got a few jackets but nothing big. And from the looks of those clouds, I think we're going to need bigger coats." Tim says. "We should be able to find some pretty nice coats pretty cheap."
They take an exit for the nearest town that looks like it might be a decent size town. They stop at a convenience store and Tim runs in to enquire about a second-hand store. Luckily the town did have one and the lady behind the counter gave him the directions.
Tim runs toward the car as more snowflakes begin to fall.
"D*mn, it's cold." Tim says hopping back into the car and turning the heat up. "Well, I have some good news and I have some bad news."
"That's never a good thing. What is it?" Avi asks.
"Good news is they do have a second-hand store." Tim smiles.
"Great. Now, what's the bad news." Avi asks giving Tim a worried look.
"There's a major snow storm moving in as we speak." Tim says as he heads out to follow the directions the lady had given him. "Alright, it's on this street somewhere. It's called Second-Chance Clothing and More."
"There it is in that shopping center." Avi points. "Looks fairly big."
The snow was coming down pretty heavy by now and the parking lot was already coated.
"This is crazy." Avi laughs. "It's coming a blizzard and we have tee shirts on."
"Sh*t!" Tim says under his breath as he opens the car door, the icy wind and snow hitting him in the face. He meets Avi in front of the car and quickly grabs him by the hand.
They run across the parking lot with Avi slipping a time or two on the snow. Tim grabs him around the waist to keep him from falling completely down.
"You fall, I'm leaving your *ss." Tim laughs as he pulls Avi a little closer trying to shield them from the blowing snow.
"Son of a..." Tim laughs as he and Avi run inside the store. The customers inside looked strangely at the two men wearing only tee shirts and no jackets.
"Y'all must not be from around here." The lady behind the counter laughs.
Tim laughs and shakes his head. "Texas."
"California." Avi answers with a smile.
"Could you point us in the direction of the coats?" Tim chuckles, brushing the snow out of his hair.
The lady smiles and points to a large selection of coats located in the corner.
The guys shiver as they begin to look through the coats.
"Might I suggest, one with a hood?" The lady smiles walking over to them. "The wind can cut right through you. Everything in the store has been cleaned and checked for rips and tears."
Both guys managed to find them warm coats with hoods. The coats looked as if they were brand new and Tim was surprised on how cheap they were.
Tim sends Avi for a shopping cart, thinking they might find something else they could use.
"This place has everything, not only clothes." Avi says as Tim puts the coats into the cart.
"That's good cause guess what?" Tim smirks.
"What?" Avi asks leaning on the cart.
"We're sleeping in the car tonight so we're going to need more blankets." Tim smiles as he puts a beanie on Avi's head.
"Oh, great." Avi says sarcastically.
"How cute is that." Tim smiles as he adjusts the beanie on Avi's head.
"You goofball." Avi smiles up at Tim.
"Let's go see what else we can find." Tim says.
They managed to find them a couple of long sleeve shirts a piece, several warm blankets and even a couple of suitcases for Avi.
"We need to get out of here before I spend what money I have." Tim whispers to Avi. "Then I'll be forced to do a couple of jobs if you know what I mean."
"Yes, I know what you mean and absolutely not." Avi says in a low voice.
Tim slips his coat on and turns to Avi. "I'll go get the car. You wait here."
Avi smiles as he watches Tim make his way out to the car through the blowing snow.
"Is he your husband or boyfriend?" The lady asks as she looks out the window at the falling snow.
"I wish." Avi whispers before speaking up louder. "No, Mam. Just a friend. We're kinda on a road trip."
"Oh, alright. The way y'all were acting I could have sworn you were a couple." The lady smiles and then turns her attention to another customer.
Avi smiles and bites his bottom lip as Tim pulls up in front of the door.
Tim puts the suitcases into the trunk while Avi throws the bag of blankets into the backseat.
"I promise, I'll pay you back for all of this somehow." Avi says as they get back inside the warm car.
"Really?" Tim smirks, raising a brow.
"TIM!" Avi scolds smacking him on the arm.
