Chapter 20

Clothes were clean and packed, the car full of gas and their stomachs were full. They checked out of their hotel and were back on the road.

Tim drove while Avi had his feet laid over in Tim's lap while he read the road atlas.

"Okay, if we stay on this highway it will lead us straight into Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. Then we can either go all the way around Mobile Bay to Mobile then get on Highway 10 that leads toward Biloxi. Orrrr, we could go to Fort Morgan and catch the ferry across Mobile Bay to Dauphin Island, cross the bridge and get on Highway 10." Avi reads then looks up at Tim for a response.

"Going across the bay on a ferry sounds pretty cool." Tim says, giving Avi a quick glance.

"I was hoping you'd say that." Avi grins and leans over, kissing Tim on the cheek.

They made a few quick stops in Gulf Shores to do a little sightseeing and picture taking. Then headed to Fort Morgan.

"This is so cool but I don't want to think about what happens to this area during a hurricane." Tim comments as they drive along the peninsula.

"True, the Gulf on one side and Mobile Bay on the other. They probably meet somewhere in the middle." Avi says as he stretches his neck to try and see all the sights. "Actually pretty scary."

"I'm sure they probably evacuate this whole peninsula." Tim says. "I know I'd be high-tailing it."

"I know that's right." Avi chuckles. "Hey, look. There's the fort. How cool is that?"

"Do you want to go see it?" Tim asks.

"Naw, I wanna ride the ferry." Avi smiles.

They pull in across the road from the fort where the cars were lined for the ferry. Tim parks behind another car then go to buy a ticket.

"They said it would be about thirty minutes." Tim says as he comes back to the car. "There are restrooms over here if you need to go."

"Probably should. Don't know how long this ride will take." Avi says as he gets out of the car.

Tim takes him by the hand as they head to the restrooms.

"I've never had this much fun in my life." Avi says as he washes his hands.

"I haven't either. I've never seen outside of Nederland." Tim chuckles, drying his hands.

They hold hands as they walk down by the water. Looking out across the bay.

"Wow. That's a wide bay." Tim says as he feels his anxiety rising.

"You getting nervous, Timothy?" Avi chuckles.

"Maybe a little." Tim smiles nervously. He looks around at all the cars waiting for the ferry. He counted twenty-eight. That's a lot of weight. His heart rate quickens as he thinks about all the ferries that he's heard about sinking. "Maybe we should have just driven to Mobile."

"Will you calm down. Your palms are sweating." Avi laughs. "It'll be fun."

Tim lets go of a heavy breath and nods as he looks out across the water. Tim tries to calm himself by reading over the pamphlet that the ticket attendant had given him.

"It says once the ferry leaves the dock, you can get out of your car and go to the look-out level upstairs." Tim reads.

"Wow, that will be rock and rock." Avi grins. "Look! There's the ferry." Avi points. "Man! Look how big it is and look at all the cars on it."

"It's good that it's big." Tim mumbles as he looks at all the cars waiting. Two more had joined into the line. Thirty in total. "Guess we need to go to the car."

Tim silently counts the cars that were unloading. Twenty-four cars, two RVs and five motorcycles. Soon they started loading the cars. They were directing the cars into three rows. They were told to put the cars in park and to turn off the engines. Duh.

As the ferry begins to leave the dock, people began to get out of their vehicles.

"Come on." Avi smiles like a child on Christmas morning as he opens his car door.

"Uh. Avi. I sometimes get motion sickness." Tim says quietly as they go up the steps. "Just thought I'd let you know."

"Really? If you start feeling sick, we can go back to the car." Avi says as they walk onto the upper deck.

After about twenty minutes, Tim could not ignore the queasy feeling in his stomach any longer. The ferry bouncing on the waves in the bay was not helping at all.

"Tim, Baby? Are you alright?" Avi asks after he notices Tim had gone pale.

"I need to go to the car." Tim says with a nod.

"Okay, let's go." Avi says, taking Tim by the arm.

"No, Sweetie, you don't have to go." Tim says. "I ... I just need to sit down for a little while. I'll be fine."

Avi nods. He figured that Tim just didn't want him to see him get sick.

Tim hurries down the steps to the car. He sits down in the passenger seat. Reaching back into the back seat, he grabs a towel, soaking it in cold water from the cooler. He then reclines his seat back and lays the towel over his face.

Avi quickly gets bored. It's not much fun without Tim. So he decides to go back to the car. They would be arriving at the dock soon anyway. Seeing Tim in the passenger seat, he goes and gets in on the driver's side.

Tim slowly raises the towel from his face as Avi gets into the car.

"Hey, it's just me, Avi." Avi says with a grin.

Tim nods and slowly sits up.

"Feeling any better?" Avi asks, brushing back Tim's hair.

"I think I'd feel better if I could throw up." Tim groans. "Just don't want to on the ferry, though."

"We'll be unloading soon." Avi says.

"Great." Tim mumbles.

Soon, they were unloading from the ferry to Dauphin Island.

"Now we just have to find that bridge." Avi says.

"Maybe you need to find a place to pull over first." Tim moans as he covers his mouth.

"Oh, crap!" Avi says. He sees a service station and quickly pulls in behind the store. No sooner than the car stops, Tim quickly unfastens his seatbelt, throws open the car door and begins to vomit on the parking lot.

Avi leans over the console and pulls Tim's hair back to keep it from getting in the way.

"Well, there goes breakfast." Avi says as he rubs his lover on the back.
