16- Sorry?
WILL POV-
"I'm sorry about the kiss." the ravenette apologised but Will's anger bubbled under the surface; unable to keep himself composed as honestly, hearing Mike's apology for some reason set him off, simply unable to accept it without addressing the gravity of the situation.
"You're sorry?" the brunette furrowed his brows, unable to contain himself as he replied with sarcasm and aggression, "Oh wow! That's the best you can do?"
Mike breathed deep, pulling out the driveway making their way down the road, his temper flaring at the response, feeling defensive about his actions, "Look, I don't know why you're being so difficult about this, I apologised didn't I?" He retorted; his voice full of irritation.
"Well, what else do you want from me?" the tall boy bit back, obviously not used to apologising.
The small boy doesn't back down, his aggression growing, "You think one simple apology is enough for everything you've done? You've kidnapped me for fuck's sake and that's not even what you're apologising for!" he snapped, his tone filled with venom.
"Listen here bowlcut!" The ravenette scoffed, "I apologised to you, now drop it!"
"Drop it?" Will scrunched his face, "Oh wow, what a genuine and heartfelt apology, Mike. I am truly overwhelmed by your sincerity."
"I can't change what happened; it's not my fault you were in the taxi I stole!" the tall boy argued
"Don't you dare!" the brunette said stern.
"What?" Mike narrowed his eyes.
"Don't you dare blame this on me!" Will's lip quivered as his voice cracked, "You could have let me out the car at any point; you're the one who is keeping me here!"
"It was an accident!" the ravenette emphasized the last word, "I didn't plan on kidnapping you!" trying to downplay the entire situation,
"Well, you may not have 'planned it', but you did what you did, and it's obvious you don't feel any remorse!" Will insisted, his voice wavering, yet seething with anger.
Mike's voice fell but his pettiness got the best of him as he retorted, "Fine, I messed up! Happy now? What else do you want from me?"
"I want you to let me go!" Will answered, slightly hopeful.
"I can't do that!" the tall boy grit through his teeth, "You know way too much now!"
"So what? I- I just stay with you forever?" Will's heart pounded in his chest as fear and anger swirled inside him.
The ravenette said nothing in return, taking a small glance at the brunette, torn between the decision he had to make; he needed to keep Will with him, or else Mike would be in danger with the police; if they found out about his criminal connections, it could hurt his friends and family. Although another part of him felt... weird, ever since the kiss and the way he saw Will acted with Holly, he just felt different, but he didn't know what.
The brunette searched the ravenette's face, seeing no expression grace his features. It was difficult to hear that he might never be able to go back home; or ever embark on his quest to find his mother; it was the one thing he was waiting for all these years, merely waiting until he built up enough money before he would leave his house.
The car fell into a heavy silence as Will turned away from Mike, feeling a mixture of fear, sadness and utter anger swirling within him. The ravenette's lack of response basically confirmed his feelings of entrapment and isolation, and despite the apology he was given, he obviously found it difficult to trust the man who kidnapped him. The reality he was being held against his will by a ruthless criminal who had the capabilities of murder and whose emotions seemed to dictate his actions were overwhelming; he truly wondered what would be of him in the future.
He kept his guard up, conflicted and annoyed, not allowing himself to trust Mike... yet he couldn't trust himself either, knowing that any wrong he might do in this situation may lead to severe consequences. He tried to think to himself of what to do in this situation, wanting to make a plan; his chances of escape and survival depended on his ability to stay composed and think rationally. But it was hard to focus when his heart was pounding, and each passing moment felt like an eternity.
---- 7:56 PM ----
As the sun set on the horizon, the car casted in a warm glow as they made their way to... wherever the next destination was. Frustrated by the silence, Mike suddenly glanced over at Will, noticing the small boy quivering in his seat; shuffling to try get as comfortable as possible. To ease the intensity of the situation, the tall boy felt prompted to strike conversation.
"So what's your favourite music artist?" The ravenette blurted, trying to sound casual though it probably didn't come off as such.
Will whipped his head around, turning to face Mike with a furrowed brow and scrunched face, perplexed by the out-of-pocket random question, "That's what you ask after 5 hours?" He replied, sarcasm lacing his voice.
"Just curious," the tall boy muttered with a shrug, attempting to be nonchalant.
"Seriously?" The brunette retorted with a small chuckle of disbelief, not believing he was just asked that by a criminal who had him handcuffed to the car, "You're asking me my music preferences?" he said, shaking his head.
The ravenette looked slightly taken aback by the response but appeared as though he was unbothered. "Just trying to make conversation, you know?" he mumbled, honesty thinking Will would gush over his favourite music.
"C-conversation?" The small boy repeated, "Did you forget the part where you kidnapped me?"
"I know..." Mike's face tightened at the blunt reminder of his actions, "I'm sorry about that again," his voice soft, a stark contrast to his previous demeanour.
"You've said..." the brunette replied bluntly but narrowed his eyes as he examined his face; noticing something unusual painted on, an expression he hadn't seen from the ravenette before; it was more sombre; more reflective, "Why are you asking me questions?" he asked, trying not to sound judgmental.
The tall boy shifted uncomfortably in his seat, unable to hide the expression on his face any longer, "I was just trying to distract myself."
"From...?" Will questioned, not even knowing why he was entertaining him.
"From everything," the tall boy said quiet, his voice filled with conflicting emotions, "From the fact I kidnapped you... because when I saw you with my family I- you fit in so well and they loved you and... I just- I just felt guilty."
The small boy widened his eyes in surprise, furrowing his brows of the fact that Mike was actually acknowledging the gravity of this situation, "You feel guilty?" He asked, a mix of confusion and shock.
The tall boy nodded, his expression unreadable, "Yeah, of course! Seeing you with Holly was kinda eye opening I guess." he admitted with a slight giggle at the end of his sentence.
"So does that mean you're gonna let me go?" Will asked, his voice trembling slightly yet hopeful despite knowing that the result would only be the same as the one from earlier.
Mike's shoulder slumped, his frustrations continuing as he sighed, "I- I don't know yet," he said honestly, "I need to figure stuff out, but I promise I won't hurt you." he added, remembering the promise he made to his twin brother.
The brunette studied Mike's features carefully for a moment, trying to gauge the sincerity of the words; still not completely convinced by the promise, given the entire circumstances. But he could sense a glimmer of regret in the ravenette's furrowed brow, leaving him torn between believing him and calling him out on his possible lie. He sighed deep, thinking about it, hoping by sharing something personal about himself, he might be able to humanize himself in Mike's eyes and possibly then be willing to let him go.
So, with a sigh, the small boy answered the earlier question, "My favourite singer is Mitski."
