24. Showdown
Jungkook was led back onto the deck with his back pressed against Captain's chest; the knife still against his throat. He still had the earbuds in his ears; the music pulsing through them like some sort of odd background music. Jungkook saw that some of the pirates had become untied and were working to untie their friends. He also saw that Taehyung was no where to be seen.
'Figures he'd run off and leave me behind,' thought Jungkook as he was suddenly forced down onto his knees.
Jungkook felt a trickle of blood run down his neck, warmer than the boards of the deck he was currently knelt on. With his eyes trained downwards, he saw Captain's boots as he soon came to stand in front of him. The tip of the blade was pressed against his neck once more.
"I don't know how you're still living after having jumped overboard, but I can assure you that I won't make the same mistake twice. This time I'll make sure you're dead."
"Are you that scared of me?" asked Jungkook
Jungkook tightened his hand around his phone as he dared to lift his head and look at Captain with a smirk on his face. He could see the anger raging across Captain's face worse than that of any stormy sea they had faced.
"What did you say, boy?"
"You heard me," he said. "You're dumb not deaf."
"Why I ought to..."
Jungkook closed his eyes. Though he liked egging Captain on, he didn't have a purpose for it now. He didn't have any fight left in him. Namjoon's offer of a family crossed his mind as he stayed knelt on the deck. He couldn't picture finding a home anywhere else though. He had been an outcast his entire life. Perhaps it was better if it all just ended right now; what battery remained in his phone playing one final song to send him off.
Yet the final blow didn't come. Instead, Jungkook felt himself being yanked onto his feet. Stumbling at the sudden transition, he opened his eyes to see who had yanked him up to see Taehyung. Jungkook's shock was conveyed in his eyes as he watched Taehyung - who was still wearing the dress - move to stand in front of Jungkook with a sword at the ready. He knew that Taehyung must be scared yet his hands remained absolutely steady as he held out the sword towards Captain. Captain started to chuckle out of amusement.
"I see he has really fit the role of damsel in distress well," said Captain as he eyed the dress. "Am I really to believe you'll do any harm to me?"
"How about you find out?" asked Taehyung in such a Jungkook way that Jungkook couldn't help the fatherly smile that crossed his face.
"You'd better watch yourself, boy! You don't know what you're saying."
Even though the other pirates that Jungkook had subdued were now all untied and flanking Captain on either side, it didn't seem to phase Taehyung who kept Jungkook tucked behind him with the sword still pointed in Captain's direction.
"Why are you doing this for him?" asked Captain.
"Because he's family," said Taehyung flatly. "Something that you don't understand. I'm tired of running. I want to stand up for what's right like I should have all along."
Captain smirked, putting away the knife in exchange for his own sword. He feinted a blow that Taehyung deflected with a 'CLING' of his sword. Jungkook knew that Taehyung wouldn't be able to beat Captain having barely had any training. That deflection had been mere luck. Jungkook pulled the earbuds out of his ear, wrapping the cord around the phone before shoving it in his pocket. Before Jungkook could reach for a discarded sword on the ground, Captain had already tried striking out at Taehyung again. Taehyung stumbled backwards a few steps as he held his sword up to catch Captain's blow; his face contorting a bit from the effort as Captain kept his blade locked against Taehyung's.
"Surrender now and I'll make sure you're dead before taking that gold from your forehead," said Captain, shoving at Taehyung as their swords remained locked.
"Maybe Jungkook was wrong...Maybe you are deaf. I already told you I'm not running, and that includes surrendering to you."
Taehyung pushed back against Captain's sword with all the strength he could muster. He was successful in propelling Captain back and away from him, causing him to land in the small cluster of pirates behind him who all fell backwards like dominos. Jungkook took this pause to grab a sword, moving to stand by Taehyung's side. Taehyung wouldn't look over at him, instead keeping his eyes glued on Captain as he rose back to his full height. He looked even angrier than before.
"You're an idiot, did you know that?" asked Jungkook as Taehyung smirked, looking over at him then.
"You're the idiot here," said Taehyung in response.
Before Jungkook could combat what was said, Captain lunged at the two of them. Taehyung and Jungkook spun away from each other in opposite directions, causing Captain to stumble through the gap. They were both ready for him as he came back at them; the pirates around them stumbling into action then too. Jungkook lost sight of Taehyung in the swarm of pirates that came their way, but was hoping that Taehyung was able to hold his own.
'Where did that sudden burst of courage come from?' thought Jungkook as he slashed his sword through the air, causing another pirate to cry out in pain before they fell onto their side on the deck.
As Jungkook weeded away the pirates in front of him that were blocking his vision, he was soon able to see the deck more clearly. Taehyung had managed to subdue all the pirates that had come his way and was now having an intense battle with Captain.
"What is it that you want?" asked Captain.
"Your ship," said Taehyung over the clank of their swords.
Jungkook watched the two of them move about as they shouted at each other; their feet like those of an intricate dancer. It really was impressive. Taehyung acted like he had fought with a sword for years. Jungkook gripped his sword tighter and was in the process of rushing over to Taehyung's aide when Captain suddenly got the upper hand. Taehyung's sword went flying across the deck; a thin line of red trailing down Taehyung's sword hand as he stumbled backwards.
"I've got you now," said Captain with a growl.
Captain turned his head to see Jungkook charging towards him. Captain reached out to grab Taehyung gruffly by the wrist, spinning him around so that he was pressed against his chest like a human shield. Captain kept his sword against Taehyung's neck as Jungkook came to a stop a few feet from them.
"Take another step forward and he dies," threatened Captain.
"Who are you kidding? Even if I remain here, he dies," said Jungkook as he ignored his own stinging wounds.
"You're right," said Captain with a chuckle. "I hate that you're always right."
Jungkook knew that his window to save Taehyung was closing fast. Jungkook looked at Taehyung as Captain pressed the blade more tightly against his neck. Trapped within Taehyung's eyes was fear but also trust. Taehyung trusted that Jungkook had a plan. His eyes said it clearly. Jungkook tried to convey the same sort of trust in return with his eyes before opening his mouth again.
"It's too bad you aren't fast enough to keep your words," said Jungkook.
Captain had just enough time to quirk an eyebrow at the comment before Jungkook took a knife out of his pocket, chucking it at Captain's sword hand. It skewered it right in the middle, causing Captain to scream out in pain as the sword clattered to the deck. Captain knelt on his knees, holding up the hand with the knife through it as if it were some sort of painful trophy. Blood gushed out of his wound that was more crimson than any outfit he had ever worn. Jungkook took the few short steps across the deck to kneel in front of Captain who - despite the pain - tried to reach his free hand for his sword. Jungkook moved his foot to step directly on top of the seeking hand, earning another cry from Captain.
"Give up. It's over," said Jungkook as he removed his foot off Captain's hand before kicking the sword out of his reach. He then moved to plant his foot in the center of Captain's chest, making him lay down flat on his back. "Now surrender!"
"Never!"
Jungkook smirked, moving to kneel down in front of Captain. He grabbed the handle of the knife that was still sticking through Captain's hand before twisting it slowly but surely. The cry of pain was enough to bring tears unwilling to Captain's eyes.
"Surrender," growled Jungkook.
"Why are you doing this?" asked Captain. "I thought you were dead...you could have just remained that way!..."
"I'll let you in on a secret," said Jungkook. "I was just going to steal your ship and let you live your miserable, sorry life, but I don't feel so forgiving now. No one threatens my family and gets away with it."
Jungkook lifted his eyes from Captain for a moment to look at Taehyung who stood a few feet away with a soft smile upon his face. Jungkook matched the smile for a second before hardening his expression again as he looked back at Captain. Jungkook yanked the knife out of Captain's hand in one pull before plunging it directly into his chest where his heart was. The look of shock in Captain's eyes soon faded away as his eyes glassed over. Jungkook stayed there for a moment even after Captain had died before moving to slowly stand to his feet. He looked over at Taehyung as he turned his gaze away from Captain.
"Are you okay?" asked Jungkook as Taehyung nodded his head despite the fact that a mixture of others' blood and his own stained his dress.
Jungkook nodded as he looked about the deck. Only a few survivors remained on the deck of the ship that had just been knocked out during the fight; all looking in horror Jungkook's way at seeing Captain dead.
"He is dead and you are all free," said Jungkook. "You are no longer ruled by him. This ship is yours. I just ask that you wait for Tweedle to rejoin your ranks before you sail off."
"What about you?" asked one of the pirates to Jungkook. "Aren't you going to be our new Captain now? Shouldn't we wait for you as well?"
Jungkook shook his head.
"No. This will be the last you will see of me. I'm going home now with my new family."
