18. Survival
"Let me try!"
"I've got it."
"You've said that for at least the last ten minutes now!"
Squinting up into the night, Taehyung stood at the base of a tree. He could barely make out Jungkook who was high up in a tree trying to secure them some sustenance for the night. Jungkook gritted his teeth around the knife he had in his mouth as he heard Taehyung shouting up at him. He really wished Taehyung would cut it out before he got them killed. Jungkook had no idea if this island really was uninhabited or not. Even if it was devoid of other humans, Taehyung's shouting could alert animal predators that hid in the brush.
Taking the knife out of his mouth, Jungkook brought it forward to attempt to get some coconuts free for them. Soon two coconuts fell from the tree one right after the other, landing with a thud on the ground at Taehyung's feet. Taehyung jumped at the coconuts' sudden appearance and leaped back a step or two in the sand as if they were going to bite him. Jungkook tucked the knife back in his belt as he rolled his eyes, shimming his way back down the tree. He was soon standing beside Taehyung once again. Without speaking a word to Taehyung, he bent down to pick up the coconuts. He tucked one under each arm before making his way back towards the shore with Taehyung in tow. Taehyung kept his head bent as he followed after Jungkook as if he was a scolded child that was currently doing the walk of shame.
On the beach was a crude shelter that Jungkook had slapped together for them to protect against the elements. It wasn't sealed off completely and wasn't the biggest, but it would provide them basic protection against the night. A small fire was burning in front of it; sparks snapping off and disappearing into the air. Jungkook moved to plop down in the sand in front of the fire with the coconuts, automatically working to get them open so they could drink from them. Taehyung sat across the fire from Jungkook and watched him silently.
"Why did you do that?" Taehyung finally asked as Jungkook finished cracking open the coconut in his hands, holding it out to Taehyung before working on his own. Taehyung moved to stand up and grab the coconut before sitting back down.
"I take it you're not talking about the coconut," said Jungkook, keeping his eyes trained down on his work so he couldn't look over at Taehyung.
"Obviously," said Taehyung.
Jungkook sighed as he slammed against the coconut's hull with more force than before as he tried to come up with his answer.
"I saved you because you remind me of myself," said Jungkook finally; Taehyung able to detect a trace of sadness in Jungkook's voice that soon disappeared as the sound of the coconut opening filled the night. Jungkook put it immediately to his lips for a drink.
Before Taehyung could ask any sorts of follow-up questions, Jungkook was on his feet again, stretching as he looked off to the side at the inky blue ocean; the full moon shimmering off its surface. Jungkook's eyes soon turned up towards the sky as the wind came across the ocean to greet the both of them. Taehyung shivered a bit from the wind since his clothes weren't dried off yet. Taehyung drank from the coconut a time or two more before setting it down in the sand.
"It's going to rain," said Jungkook as he turned away from the ocean and towards the fire again. "It'll be suicide not to dry off our shirts at least while we still have a fire going."
Without waiting for Taehyung to respond, Jungkook moved to the tree line to grab a large branch. He came back over to the fire, stabbing it into the sand so it'd stay upright before beginning to strip out of his shirt. Jungkook soon had his sopping wet shirt draping over the stick. Now that Jungkook was shirtless, Taehyung was clearly able to see the scars that were left in odd designs along his chest and back. Some of them looked like they were inflicted on him by others while other scars almost looked like they had always been there; as if he had been born that way. Taehyung knew that Jungkook could tell he was staring at his scars. Perhaps this was Jungkook's roundabout way of opening up without being vocal about it.
Taehyung moved to stand up to take his own shirt off, putting it next to Jungkook's to dry as the wind picked up again. Taehyung shivered a bit as he sank back down onto the sand by the fire; Jungkook doing the same on the other side of it.
"You have companions, don't you?" asked Jungkook as he looked over at Taehyung.
Taehyung opened his mouth, wondering if he ought to respond to the intimidating man's sudden question across from him. Taehyung's hesitation was apparently enough of an answer for Jungkook as he chuckled, shaking his head.
"I figured you had someone, not just because of Tweedle, but because there's no way you could survive on your own."
That comment - intentional or not - hurt Taehyung deeply. He shut his mouth, looking away from Jungkook and down at the fire. Jungkook stared at Taehyung across the way as he kept his head down. Jungkook moved to stand up, unsheathing his sword. Walking over to Taehyung, Jungkook stood beside him with the sword in hand, watching as Taehyung still remained staring at the fire.
"Get up," said Jungkook, his words finally causing Taehyung to look over at him. When Taehyung noticed the sword, he didn't seem surprised. Instead, he seemed as if he had accepted this would be the inevitable outcome.
"Just get it over with."
Jungkook rolled his eyes, stabbing the sword in the sand in front of Taehyung.
"Take the sword and stand up," said Jungkook. "I'm going to teach you a thing or two about fighting."
"Why?" asked Taehyung as he looked at Jungkook.
For once Jungkook hesitated in answering before seeming to find words to hide behind again as he said, "Because I don't know how long we're going to be stranded here and I don't need your lack of self-defense getting both of us killed."
Like taking the shirt off had exposed a vulnerable side of Jungkook, Taehyung saw how this action too exposed a softer side of him. Taehyung figured there was obviously a reason why Jungkook was so guarded.
'He and Suga would get along,' thought Taehyung as he grabbed the hilt of the sword and rose to his feet.
