1. Inherited Insanity
Kim Namjoon stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom as he adjusted his tie. The navy blue and purple striped tie was one that his father had gotten him specifically for the occasion. Even though he was old enough to buy his own tie, his father had worried that his unusual taste would lead him to get a tie that was not fitting for a reading of a will.
He dropped his hands away from his tie as he looked at his reflection in the mirror, turning the faucet on so that he could wet his fingertips and try to get his rebellious hair to lay down flat.
"We're leaving!" shouted his mother from somewhere within the bowels of the house.
"I'm coming!"
Looking back at his reflection one last time, Namjoon took a deep breath and moved to open the door. Walking down the hallway of his family's small one floor house, he was soon entering the entryway where both of his parents were waiting for him. His mother was dressed in a rosy red dress with a scoop neck; white heels suffocating her feet. His father was dressed in a black suit with matching shoes. Namjoon noticed that the tie he was wearing matched his father, letting out a sigh. He really must have liked the design.
"Is Hajoon here yet?" asked Namjoon as he bent down to put his shoes on.
"He isn't coming. He is meeting us at your grandfather's estate. He had a few things to finish up at work before he could come out for the reading of the will. You know how busy he is."
Of course he was busy. His older brother – Kim Hajoon - was one of the most successful CEOs in the world. There had been a time or two where Hajoon had even graced the covers of magazines due to his wealth and status. His parents had had the magazines framed and displayed in the same manner that one displayed their child's artwork on the fridge. Himself on the other hand had no noticeable accomplishments that were 'hang up' worthy. He was twenty-seven and still lived at home. He had amassed student debt going to college - and with a pandemic sweeping through at the time he graduated - he was unable to get a job that matched his degree. That left him settling for odd jobs here and there that didn't even come close to helping him pay back his loans. Namjoon had no choice but to move home to try to save up the necessary funds. Two years later, he was stuck in the same place.
Following his parents outside, Namjoon got into the back of the cramped family car; a car that always seemed to have crumbs on the floor. He shifted on the seats that looked like they were bleeding stuffing everywhere as he buckled. Soon they were on their way through the city and towards his grandfather's estate. The city that he had grown up in soon gave way to rolling fields. His eyes looked upwards at the clouds in the baby blue sky that were so thin and wispy that they formed odd shapes. Right after he had spotted the fifth exotic animal made by the clouds, his parents had pulled off into the gated driveway that stood open for the occasion.
As he rode up the drive, he could see that Hajoon was already there. His expensive car took up a considerable part of the u-shaped drive since he refused to park like a normal person would. Hajoon was currently leaning up against the polished front of his car with his equally polished self flicking through his cell phone and smirking at what must be an amusing text message. He lifted his head as his parents parked their vehicle in a more normal fashion. Namjoon got out of the car as his parents moved to go hug Hajoon.
"It's horrible that we had to reunite over such tragic matters," said his mother as she pulled back to look at her eldest son. "I am so happy though that you could take time out of your busy schedule to come to the reading of your grandfather's will."
"Of course, mother. I always make time for family."
Namjoon rolled his eyes. He found Hajoon more obnoxious than anything else. When he turned his focus back to his brother, he saw that he was looking at him with a coy smirk painted across his face as Hajoon walked over to him.
"And my dear brother! It has been so long! It's nice to see that nothing has changed though."
Namjoon was brought into a constricting hug by Hajoon followed by what Namjoon felt was a demeaning pat on the head. He and Hajoon never got along. Hajoon thought that he was the best at everything and made Namjoon feel like a constant failure. Namjoon knew that Hajoon's words just now had been uttered with malice but didn't react. He was used to it and anyway, he was at the reading of his grandfather's will. He needed to behave himself.
They soon moved in unison to trail through the mammoth halls of the gigantic mansion on their way to the office where the attorney waited. As Namjoon walked along, he looked around to see how much had changed since he'd last been there. Every room he walked past seemed to be frozen in time beneath a layer of dust. Painted pictures lined the walls of the hall; transitioning into photographs the closer they got to his grandfather's office.
The four of them were soon entering his grandfather's office. The office displayed the life of a well-read man. Bookcases lined every space on the walls from floor to ceiling. The only wall that didn't have any bookcases was the wall with the huge windows that overlooked the garden out back. Namjoon let his eyes scan the spines of the books like he did every time he came to visit his grandfather. He wondered if he had ever read them all and why he kept so many. In the center of the office was a large, round table where the attorney sat with his neatly organized stacks of papers. He gave them all a sympathetic smile before gesturing at them all to sit.
Namjoon sank down onto one of the red upholstered oak chairs. Once they were all seated, the attorney read them the will. Namjoon knew that his grandfather was wealthy so expected - if anything - he and all of his family members would get a share of that wealth. Not that Hajoon needed it, but Namjoon assumed that his grandfather would be fair since he was a kind and loyal man like that. As the attorney droned on and on, Namjoon noticed a picture of him and his grandfather on his grandfather's desk behind the attorney; the two of them grinning with a forest in the background. As much as the money would be nice, he would miss his grandfather deeply.
It took less time to read the will than Namjoon had expected. As he thought, his parents had inherited some money and the mansion while Hajoon just received a large sum of money. Namjoon's name was not mentioned at all though. As the attorney began to reach the end of the will, Namjoon half expected he wasn't going to receive anything.
"And lastly, Namjoon, your grandfather wanted you to have this," the attorney said as an envelope was slipped down the table his way.
Namjoon grabbed it, opening it to see that there was a key inside and a brief note written by his grandfather. He dug the note out now as all three members of his family looked at him with bated breath.
"Family is the most important thing of all," read Namjoon as he looked at the key on the table. He put the note down and picked up the key. Maybe it was a key to a safety deposit box or something.
"What is the key for?" asked Namjoon finally as he looked at the attorney.
"It is the key to the RV out in the yard," said the attorney.
Namjoon heard a bark of laughter from Hajoon as his cheeks turned scarlet. This had to be a mistake. He remembered his grandfather going sort of loopy towards the end of things and buying an RV. Namjoon even remembered hearing his parents talk at the time about how his grandfather had gone insane. Now he inherited the said insanity.
Namjoon couldn't believe it. He couldn't freaking believe it.
