7. The Thing About Envy, The Thing About Angry

"The thing about Envy and me, comes out of nowhere, hits so hard I can hardly breathe, in the middle of the night when I need sleep, you see, that's the thing about Envy. Yeah, the thing about Angry and me, I'm strong then I'm down on my knees, I scream when the silence should speak, you see, that's the thing about angry."- Lady Antebellum

Noah stepped lightly around the corner of the hall, Sam directly in front of him. They casually bypassed sight from the next turn in the hallway, pressing close to the wall.

Sam peered around the wall, seeing the man from the bar earlier in the evening conversing with another man, much taller with a more broad built and far younger. He could pass as a roadie or a body guard easily.

That's when Sam's phone chose to ring, causing Noah to grit his teeth together in fruststration as Sam frantically pulled it from his pocket and answered it.

"Dean," he muttered, "Hey, I can't talk right now."

He paused as Dean said something in response, before saying, "Yeah, I'm fine, just uh..." he spared another quick glance around the corner, seeing the larger and younger man walking fro the door, "Meet us at the bar in twenty minutes, okay?"

He didn't give Dean time to answer, instead hanging up the phone and hurrying to quickly make his way back around the other wall, Noah right in front of him.

When the man rounded to where they had previously been stood and didn't see them, he looked around once more before turning back to the office.

Sam and Noah stayed in place for another few minutes before they saw both men walk back down the hallway and take the turn opposite of where they had hidden before nearly being caught. They shared a quick glance before quietly pacing their way towards the office, seeing the door now closed and no one inside.

Sam quickly approached said glass door and opened it, they had left it unlocked. The two hunters stepped inside andout of sight as rapidly as they could manage before scouting the room before them.

Sam made way for the desk immediately, digging around the paperwork laid out on top and then going through the drawer. Noah chose to dig around the bookcase tucked beside the door. It was only when he heard Sam grunt that he turned around.

Sam had been attacked by the younger man, though he had quickly gained the upperhand. It was when the elder of the pair, Trotter, stepped up and placed a revolver against his jaw that Sam stopped fighting back.

Neither of the men seemed to take note of Noah in the corner of the room, tucked into a shadow. Noah remained silent, reaching for his pistol on his belt, preparing it. "What are you doing here?" Trotter asked Sam.

"I think maybe you know," Sam replied cryptically. "Yeah? Well I think I'm calling the cops," He told Sam. "Cops?" Sam raised an eyebrow. "Breaking and entering, assault," the man listed off, "You're in a peck of trouble my friend."

"Uh, well I think I could probably explain-" Sam cut himself off as he quickly turned, taking the gun from the other man's hand and turning where he was closest to the exit.

"Alright, back up!" Sam barked in a threatening tone, "Get back."

"Money's in the safe, take it and go," Trotter told him. "I don't want your money," Sam stated, pulling a flask out of his coat pocket, "I've just gotta be sure."

He uncapped it before splashing it's contents onto both men. Zero reaction, besides the given shock of water randomly hitting you in the face, sputtering and staring at Sam as if he were crazy.

"What kind of psycho are you?" Trotter looked back to Sam, raising an eyebrow of his own. "Oh God," Sam cringed.

"Uhhh..." Sam trailed, "Sorry," he awkwardly chuckled.

Noah sighed, placing his gun back into place before stepping from the shadow, crossing his arms, "I think this is a minor misunderstanding." All eyes turned to him as he continued, approaching Sam, "So I think we're just gonna leave and forget this happened."

He walked up to Sam, "So let's take this," He held the revolver which he pulled from Sam's hands gently, pointing it in the air as he turned back to keep facing the other men, "And do this," he opened the cylinder, emptying out the bullets, "And I'm gonna leave it here, and we're just gonna go."

He placed it on the desk, flashing them an awkward smile before taking Sam's shoulder and mudging him forward. They turned and hurried out of the corridor, both cringing to themselves respectively.

"Well that was fun," Noah stated when they reached the car. "That it was," Sam grimaced. Noah turned to Sam, his lips upturning slightly as he remembered the adorable, awkward smile Sam had donned as soon as he knew they were both human. He stifled a laugh that attempted to escape as he turned back to look at Sam.

Sam bit his lip, stopping his own laughter. It was when another bought attacked Noah and he snorted from pushing it down that they both turned to each other and burst out laughing. Partly the situation, partly adrenaline, and partly something they couldn't come to understand yet, the hunters laughed until tears lined their eyes and their stomachs hurt from the violent muscle movements that came with the laughter.

It would be one of the more subtle moments that years down the line, they would each look back on and smile.

Scanning the bar around them, Noah panic rose even further. He and Sam had been here for ten minutes now with no sign of Dean. According to Sam, he had seemingly already been in the car when he called them if the background noise was anything to go by.

Noah went to pull his phone out, Sam had already tried to call Dean five times now, but he was willing to try his luck. That's when he met eyes with a woman sitting at the bar and stirring her fruity drink with her straw, smiling and making eyes at both of them.

Sam met eyes with her as well, flashing her a quick upturn of his lips to be polite. Noah gave her no such courtesy.

"You look kinda tense," She spoke up. Noah turned back to her and he could see she was looking at him. Sam also turned to see her looking at Noah, a flirtatious smile gracing her lips. "You know, I know a surefire way to relax," She set her drink down on the counter, keeping that seductive expression across her features.

Sam felt a mild flare in his chest before furrowing his eyebrows in confusion. He hadn't felt like that since Dean tried to argue with him about staying with Madison, but even then it wasn't this strong. It didn't make sense. He shook his head, shaking it off. He tried to explain it away with the fact that it had been so long since he'd gotten physical attention, but somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew that wasn't true.

Noah chuckled, "Yeah sister, see, I don't exactly play for your team, so you're not really my type."

She frowned in a way that made her seem like she was pouting before shiftng her eyes to Sam, "How about you, Everest?" she bit her lip, leaning her arms onto the counter. This allowed the weight of her bust to be supported by the bar top, therefore pushing her breasts up to show more cleavage. "In need of a little R & R?" She questioned.

Noah felt a familiar pang in his heart and he bit his lip in order to distract himself. He was sick of thinking about it today.

"Maybe later," Sam rolled his eyes, sarcastically responding before turning around to face the bartender, "Excuse me?"

The man turned around, "What can I get for you?"

"Do you remember the guy we were with last night? We sat right here," Sam motioned to the bar stools. "The big hero who jumped on Reggie?" He inquired. "Yeah, yeah, the-" Sam rolled his eyes, "The big hero, right, um, have you seen him around at all today?"

"Maybe, depends," The man answered. "Depends on what?" Sam furrowed his eyebrows. He just smiled at him sarcastically.

Noah sighed, rolling his eyes. "Oh my- Does everyone around here have their hand out?" Sam questioned, his tone seeping with total frustration.

He reached into his pocket, but Noah stopped him by putting his hand on his arm an giving him a look. Sam grew nervous. Noah stepped up to the bar, "Listen buddy, we don't exactly have time for this bullshit, so if you could please just, I don't know, tell us what we need, we'll be out of your hair lickety-split."

"No can do," The man smirked at him. Noah pursed his lips, nodding before grabbing the man's shirt collar pulling him down to meet eyes with him, "Alright, I'm done playing, this is a quite literal matter of life and death right now so if you don't fucking tell us where he went, so help me God, they won't be able to find your body, do you understand me?"

He hovered his other hand over his gun on his belt for emphasis. "Alright, alright," The man caved, "He went with Casey about an hour ago."

"I need it a little more specific than that," Noah snapped. "Her place, corner of Piermont and Clinton."

"Thank you," Noah sarcastically smiled before grabbing the back of Sam's jacket and pulling him towards the door.

Sam knocked on the door of the apartment and it opened. It had been left slightly ajar with no chain lock. Sam squinted, knowing that was a bad sign as he stepped in with Noah and Delta right behind him. Delta immediately went to sniffing around and this made Noah tense up.

"Dean?" Sam called out. Noah followed after Delta and he saw a slightly yellow-tinted powder. Realization dawned on him, "Sam."

Sam turned, and Noah beckoned him to where he crouched before pointing the edge of the bay window, "Sulfur."

They shared a look and a deep breath, knowing what that likely meant.

"Bobby, we've got a problem, we found some sulfur and now we can't find Dean, call me as soon as you get this," Sam hung up, leaving the message for Bobby to answer.

He speed walked to the bar, "They weren't there."

"Pity," the guy pursed his lips at him, "Suppose it'll have to wait, how about you sit down and have a drink?"

"I don't want a damn drink! What is it with the people in this town?!" Sam snapped at him. "Suit yourself princess," He shook his head, throwing back the shot he had poured for Sam.

Sam sighed, running a hand down his face before turning around, seeing the priest sat in a booth.  An idea struck him and he approached the man, "Father."

The man nodded in greeting. "Um... Can I talk to you for a sec?" Sam asked.

Sam sat down, "So the bartender from the other night, Casey, uh, you know her pretty well?"

"Since she was in pigtails," He nodded. "Well um, she and my brother, they uh... they... left tonight, together," Sam explained.

"Ah," The priest nodded, "Not that I approve, but they are consenting adults."

"Right," Sam nodded. "I'm sorry, you said 'brother'? I thought you three were insurance investigators," he inquired.

"Right, right, well we are, um, it's like a family business, you know?" Sam explained. He nodded, "So that would make which one of them your brother?"

"Oh, Dean's my brother, Noah is a close family friend, our families work together," Sam excused.

"Anyways, um, so I went to Casey's apartment and they weren't there, I just, I need to find him," Sam explained. That's when Noah walked up, still flipping his phone closed. Brian had desperately needed an extra consult for one of his close friends, and he had called Noah to bounce ideas.

"Uh, hey, that was," Noah's eyes moved to the priest, "That was Brian, we've gotta get back, it's getting close."

"Hi, Father," Noah smiled briefly in greeting. "Sorry just..." he sighed, "We really need to head back home, my sister is going into labor and we all need to get back on time to be there when the baby's born, but we cannot find Dean anywhere."

"That's what Sam was just explaining," He greeted back, his eyes scanning Noah's face, scrutinizing. "Anyway, do you know of any place where she might've gone?" Sam questioned.

"Hm, I do know a place, let me just get my jacket," He went to stand up. "Woah, Father, we don't want to put you out, we can handle this by ourselves," Sam stated.

"Son, if Casey's really in trouble, then there's nothing to talk about," He spoke firmly before standing up to retrieve his coat.

Noah got an uneasy feeling in hsi gut, and it left him feeling unsettled as the Father propsed, "Shall we go?"

• • •

"So, insurance investigating," He started, "You enjoy the work?"

Noah chose to stay quiet, and observe the conversation between Sam and this man, wondering if his suspicions would be confirmed or not.

"Yeah, yeah, I like being able to help people," Sam answered.

"Ever think about doing something else?" he questioned. "Like what?" Sam inquired. "Mm, anything," He responded, "You seem like a pretty smart kid, somehow I see you out in front of the pack, you could do some great things."

Noah felt in his gut that something was off, and he had another gut feeling that he knew exactly what it was. But he chose to stay silent until they got to Dean.

• • •

"Dean?" Sam called as he stepped out of the car. "Dean!" Noah shouted as well as he set his feet on the dirt.

Sam and Noah both hurried to the door, the priest right behind them. Sam started banging on the door, and for it's size it created a lot of noise from a single pound. "Dean?!" Noah shouted in time with Sam.

Getting no answer, Noah stepped back, as did Sam, before Sam turned the corner around the side of the house. Noah went to reach for his flashlight to search for anything near the door as sam instructed the priest to check the other side when he heard Dean shouting, "Sam! Noah!"

"Dean!" Sam shouted back, finding a grate. "Sammy, down here! the basement caved in!" Dean called back. Sam crouched, "Dean," Facing Dean through the grate, "Okay, hold on, we're coming."

"Hurry," Was Dean's only response, "And be careful." Sam nodded, standing back up. Noah was stood next to him as he stood to full height and Noah turned to Sam, "Sam, listen, he's a demon, I swear it, trust me on this."

They both turned around only for the man to be standing there. His eyes flashed black, confirming Noah's suspicions.

Neither of them had time to do anything as a gunshot rang out and a statue crumbled from the impact of a bullet. They all turned to the source of the noise and there Bobby stood with the now reassembled Colt.

The demon flung Bobby across the courtyard. Bobby landed hard on his front. The demon turned back to Sam and Noah. And with a flick fo his hand, he sent them both flying back into the windshield of the car, and Noah briefly thanked whoever was in charge that they hadn't taken his Jeep but they had taken the priests car as it completely shattered the glass.

It took them both a moment to gather their barings, but once Sam stood up off of the car and staggered towards Bobby's struggling form, Noah wasn't far behind.

"Bobby, you alright?" Sam asked. "Yeah," Bobby breathlessly answered. "How did you know where we-" Sam didn't get to finish his question before Bobby shoved the Colt into his hands and croaked out, "Go."

Sam grabbed hold of the gun before turning back to Noah. They shared a nod, but when they went to walk, something caught their peripherals. They both looked, seeing a blonde woman stood there. She spoke, "You heard the man, go."

Recognition shone in Sam's eyes as Noah grew more confused than ever. But they both shook it off and hurried in through the now broken door.

They quietly made their way down the stairs and when Sam saw the priest holding Dean in the air by his throat, he took the shot. It struck through his shoulder, and he looked down in shock before pulses of electricity spread out from the wound, his entire form convulsing. And then he dropped, dead.

"Sam, wait-" Dean barely had a chance to try to stop him before Sam shot Casey as well. She didn't take much either, falling right beside the other, now dead, vessel.

Noah stared in shock as he saw the tense stance in Sam's stature, the look on his face consisting of pure, protective rage. He'd only ever seen that look on Sam's face once before, when he killed Jake. But at the time, it was on Noah's face as well.

He didn't know what scared him more, how much rage Sam had buried in him, or how well he wielded it as a weapon all it's own.

Dean even stared at Sam, seeing the look in his eyes and growing unnerved. He was growing nervous for the potential of what Sam could become.

Noah shook his head, pushing the thoughts aside for the time being. He turned to Dean, helping him up, "Are you hurt anywhere?"

"Not that I can feel, maybe a few bruises," Dean shrugged. "Good," Noah nodded before clapping his hand across the back of Dean's head. Dean flinched, reaching a hand up to cup the stinging spot, "Ow! What was that for?"

"This is why we memorize the exorcism chant! So we don't end up stuck, with a demon and our pants around our ankles!" Noah scolded. The glee filled laughter that sounded behind him brought a small smile to Noah's face and he wondered for a moment how one person could have so much anger behind his eyes and yet, could also make such a beautiful, joyful noise.
