Chapter 1: Anniversary
I open my eyes and stare at the ceiling. I'm not looking forward to today. I'm sure the others aren't either. We were all blamed- and it doesn't help we're coming back to school on the anniversary of it. I can't really not go, I promised them I'd go back if they did. "Dallas! Wake up, it's time for you to get ready," I heard my mom yell. "Do I have to?" I questioned. "Didn't you promise your friends?" I groaned and got up after she said that. I walked to my closet to find something to wear.
I started looking for a specific shirt. It should be with my other short sleeved shirts. Dang it, I can't find it. "Mom! Where is that one shirt with the skull on it?" I asked. "Don't you remember? We put it with the other stuff in the basement, and its probably best you don't wear the shirt River gave you today," she replied. "Why?" I questioned her. "Just, don't wear it today please," she told me. She started walking out of my room. "Ugh, fine," I replied. Once I found a shirt to wear for the day, I got dressed.
Time to get breakfast, I guess. I went downstairs and grabbed a protein bar. Better than nothing. "Bye, mom, see you later!" I called out to her. I walked outside, not waiting for a response, and started eating. "Hi, Dallas," I heard someone say. I shook my head and continued walking. "Do you know where River is?" he sneered at me. "Leave me alone, I don't want to deal with you today," I told him. "What if I don't? What are you going to do, make me disappear like everyone else in your- Ow! You hit me!" "I told you to leave me alone," I said to him and started walking again.
I could tell he was following me, so I just started walking faster. "Dallas! I haven't seen you in forever!" I hear one of my friends yell. I smiled and gave her a hug. "It's the- um- anniversary, isn't it?" she asked me. I nodded. "They are still blaming me for this and it's going to be worse since it's been exactly a year." She gave me a pity smile and then said, "Come on, we have to get to class."
As we walked into the school, everyone was staring at us, some gave us sympathetic looks and other gave us angry looks. "Today isn't going to be a good day," I muttered.
