Grisha had a serious problem on his hands. He was glad to have been the closest doctor when the chosen soldier to act as messenger had reached him. He knew his sons would be among those men and he feared one of them had gotten wounded or worse.

Seeing all the men gathered around a tent, all anxious, worried and looking like kicked puppies only made him understand the important of the injured soldier inside. He filled with relief at seeing both of his sons unharmed and alive.

Giving them all a shaky but comforting smile as he entered the tent, knowing he'd do his best to keep their beloved friend alive and ready to fight another battle.

He just didn't expect to find his daughter laying on the bed mat. She'd clearly lost a lot of blood and her wound wasn't the prettiest. He shoved all his own personal thoughts and worries to the side, focusing on keeping her alive and mending the slash to her side.

He grabbed two blankets, folding one to lay across her chest to protect her dignity while still gaining access to her wound. Undoing the bindings and pulling them free, making sure the first blanket never slipped and exposed any chest area.

Cleaning and patching up her wound he soon used the second blanket to cover her better. Using it to keep her warm and tucked in while her body slept and rested.

Now that gave him time with his thoughts.

He never heard word from his wife or old friend, no news over Mikasa having disappeared. And she would have been gone enough to be seen as missing if she had left with his sons. Maybe they didn't want to worry him or the boys, pretended everything was well in hopes to not add their burdens.

Mikasa was Mika.

She's gained the trust and friendship of all those men outside the tent, all of them awaiting to hear the news of their friend's health.

He was proud, he knew Mikasa wasn't some timid women and was overjoyed she found somewhere she could shine and almost be herself completely. But she was also lying to all those men outside.

Grisha needed to think over his next steps as her step in father, not as a soldier, not as a doctor nor as a friend.

Mikasa wanted to get married and start her own family one day.

It was her dream.

Scar under her eye from those that murdered her parents could be over looked. Scars from war, that was hard to explain. More so when the wound on her side will clearly look newer than the one under her eye.

The war was over but she'd be held back from her injury from anything heavy. Or, she should be. He's seen her do all three children's worth of chores while facing a fever once in the past. He knew she'd be stubborn and still try to do her part anyway.

But if he needed to think over her dream.

The war was near the end and they were in the middle of nowhere. It was best to confess her lies now. Only a handful of people were around and so, not many would know over her sin. It was best for her to be exposed now, where few could see than to have her escorted home by soldiers and her shame seen by all in their home village.

For her to be taken to prison silently now than for it to be announced before a huge gathered coward that'd use her as a warning example towards other young girls. Maybe the captain would let her go free, allow him to take her home due to embarrassment over a women besting them.

It was the best plan to go with.

To tell the truth now while there were little eyewitnesses around than to wait until they were home and all would be witness to her dishonour.

He could protect her honour and dignity this way. Have her taken home and pretend that this has never happened. She could still be married, start the family she's always dreamed over and she'd left be shamed by others.

If worse was to come true and her life taken, it was best for her to die here than at a public excursion. He could lie to those from his home village, mention she was a victim of wall. A jealous soldier had taken her life, making sure no other could have her hand in marriage if he couldn't. The people in the village were idiots, they'd believe it and pity poor Mikasa for the lost of life.

He also had to think over his family, his sons. If Mikasa was publicly dishonoured and shamed, they'd be caught up in it as well. They'd be forgotten as heroes and treated badly for her sins. He had to protect them, just as Mikasa was always protecting them.

He was doing this for Mikasa's own good.

She'd still be able to marry, kept her dignity and honour while also making sure her brothers wouldn't be punished with her.

She's played soldier, now she needed to come home.

Meanwhile...

Armin wasn't worried at all. The doctor were their step up father after all and he'd be willing to protect Mikasa just as much as Mikasa protected the rest of them. He wouldn't expose her, he knew the punishments awaiting her if he did.

Plus, the Hans were defeated. Kenny was dead. All that was left was to march to the emperor, make the announcement and stand as the heroes of their kingdom. Two days at most was left before they'd all hang up their swords and return home, living normal lives once again.

It made no sense to tell the truth over Mikasa, not unless she was serious hurt and even if that was the case. Wouldn't it be best to let her final moments in life to be peaceful and have her stand as a hero than a disgrace.

Armin was confident that Grisha would be thinking the same thoughts as Armin. That he'd keep her identity protected and go with the flow for the next couple of days. Armin didn't mind becoming the doctors helper in caring for Mikasa if it meant helping to keep her dignity and honour safe.

That's why he wasn't even worried when Grisha had stepped out from the set up tent and privately spoke with the Captain. Doctors had to pass on the conditions of the soldiers to the highest rank close by after all. He was just giving his reporter over Mikasa's injury. Not selling her out.

And so Armin didn't even panic when the captain had hurried inside the tent. He'd most likely be planning to lecture her over how reckless she was and how she shouldn't ever disobey orders again. As well as pass on his gratitude for saving his and the rest of the men's life as well.

In truth, Armin only started to let his nerves build up once Mr Jaeger didn't look in their direction at all. Wouldn't look either of them in the eyes even after Eren had called out to his father, waving him over in hopes to learn over "Mika's" condition.

Instead, both brothers froze on the spot and watched as Mr Jaeger's retreating back grew further and further away as he needed some time alone. Not looking back at them once and filling the men with dread.

The rest of the men fell pale as they assumed that the Doctor had some bad news to pass to the captain. All of them assuming the worse and fearing that Mika wouldn't survive the night. Anxiously waiting for their captain to step out and pass on the deathly news of Mika's shorten life.

But Armin knew better.

His father wouldn't have held back on telling any deathly news. He didn't believe it was healthy to keep bad news hidden to the side and stop other's from having a chance to speak any final words to the patient.

No, Mr Jaeger had done something much worse.

He's let Mika's real name or true gender slip to the captain.

They had won the war, kept peace to their kingdom, but she'd still be at risk of punishments due to them all still wearing their uniforms. If only they could wait another day or two, they would have all returned home unknowing.

Inside the Tent...

Levi stood with his backs to the tent flaps. Staring at the soldier who he just couldn't get a read on all this time. One of his best, the strongest, fastest and one he could hold faith in to survive this war and many more in the future.

Everything he found odd about him, about her, finally made sense.

She wasn't a man, she was a women.

And he wanted to laugh as she had outdone everyone else around her. She was the top man in his squad and he was proud to have had called her one of his men.

He didn't want to punish her, not when they were both trying to prove themselves. His knew his cousin wouldn't have taken her life, would have seen the skills she held and given her another chance. Just like he did with him, give him a chance no one else was willing to give.

But he stood as Captain now, his cousin dead.

Killed by the same man she had helped to taken down while saving all his men's lives.

Mika was a girl.

It really wasn't as surprising as he assumed it should be.

Both men and women are forced to walk down different pathways, spikes pointing inwards to stop them from ever escaping the route laid down to them by the gods and honours.

Those that are able to break down the spikes, to gain a space to jump from their path has always had to fight much harder than anyone else. Mika was a fighter, all had known that much and her reasoning made sense.

Women couldn't fight, and yet, she was the best he had.

Levi knew he could take this secret to the grave with him if needed.

He wasn't going to judge the soldier laying before him and resting when she's never fully judged him. She believed in him, believed in others who'd most give up and became the glue the men had needed during their training.

He'll leave this tent before she wakes, get Arlert to bring over a chance of clothes for her to dress in and they'll all carry on marching to emperor Furlan and pass on the grand news of the Hans defeat.

She was going to stand as a hero among them as long as he could make sure no one else learnt over this secret. In two days, they'd all be marching home as heroes and their lives as soldiers would be over. No one would ever need to know over this.

And maybe, he'd pay a certain village a visit and they could both meet in a more natural setting. She might even be willing to sit and have some tea with him and both could speak their own minds freely as nether would have to worry over titles or ranks stopping them.

It'd just be a man, meeting a women, and the both of them sharing a pot of tea.

And if the women was willing to maybe train with him during his visit to the village than he'd never question how she'd able to hold her own against a captain.

Only IF marriage may have sparked up in conversation and they both felt connected enough for such a huge step sometime in the future. He wouldn't question over any scarring found on her body either. He had plenty of scars himself, it's just a normal part of life for him and he hears that many household chores can be truly dangerous sometimes.

Sure, marriage seemed like a very far fetch right now. But he couldn't help admire someone who could throw a right hook that actual left him hurting. And she had the most perfect right hook he's ever felt before.

Finally leaving her to rest in peace, letting her body heal itself from within now the doctor did everything to help from without. He stepped outside and glanced to his teary eyed men and wondered who died.

"C-Captain? Is Mika-" Marco started to ask, sniffling and ready to break down crying if their fears became true.

"He's alive. Recovering well enough for the wound he's gained. Arlert go fetch him a spare set of uniform and help to dress him. Now"

"Y-Yes Captain!" Armin called back, a bright and blinding smile pulling on his lips as he soon hurried towards Hannes. Ready to grab Mikasa's belongings and help keep her sisters secret once more.

The men all cheered and split their faces in half with the joyful and relieved smiles filling their lips. Hugging one another and thanking all gods they had pray towards moments before. Armin having a happy skip to his step as he hurried towards the tent, Mikasa's bag held tightly in his arms.

And that's when the captain finally realized that maybe sending a man in to change the sleeping female wasn't the best plan to use. Quickly holding his arm out, stopping Armin before he even dared to enter the tent.

"Maybe it's best to let the doctor dress Mika. We don't want to risk pulling any stiches" Levi quietly said as he looked to the blonde boy, not wanting to risk embarrassing Mikasa or taking any of her dignity away by having a man dress her that she may not truly know.

"Of course, Captain" Armin replied with a small nod, knowing the Captain must know Mikasa's secret but not making any move to show he knew it too.

"Go fetch the doctor. I'll make sure no one disturbs the brat while he's resting" Levi sighed, holding his hands out to take the bag from the blonde.

"Yes Captain" Armin smiled back, passing the bag to the Captain before racing off to find Grisha and get him to help dress Mikasa for them.

Levi stayed guard, keeping an eye on his happy and celebrating men who were keeping a respectful distance away from the tent to not risk waking their friend who was still recovering. Glancing to where he noticed Arlert had reached the Doctor, speaking privately to him as they headed back towards the tent.

Not giving much care over Erwin who had followed behind the two. Glancing over his shoulder as he heard shuffling coming from inside. He wasn't sure if he should poked his head inside and check if she's woken up or needed any help. Glancing back towards the direction of the doctor, he was met face to face with a furious Erwin.

Levi wasn't one to be easily removed when he was on guard but he was expecting the doctor not the emperors counsel. Hence he was delayed in his reaction to grabbing at the mans arms and yank him back. Instead he stumbled into the tent after him but was already too late.

Mikasa was awake, holding the blanket folded across her chest and keeping it from moving. Her eyes were wide, panicked and filling with dread as she knew she couldn't come up with any lie or explanation over this being a huge and crazy misunderstanding.

"I'm sorry. Please let me explain Capt-" Mikasa started to say, her expression apologetic and guilty as she expected the other man to feel betrayed. Prepared to be hated but ready to plead to explain her reasoning.

"Erwin, leave" Levi ordered out, keeping his expression unreadable and cutting the women off before she said anymore in the rat's presence.

Mikasa as subtly as possible moved her hand to grab the second blanket, pulling it to cover over her shoulder and keep herself covered her better. Her second hand keeping glued to the other blanket around her chest, not daring to risk it falling at any point.

"So, it's true" Erwin hissed out, glaring down towards her.

Levi turned towards Erwin, ready to chew the man out for not following his orders. But Erwin acted first, storming his way towards Mikasa and grabbing at her arm on her uninjured side. Yanking her out of the tent with him while Levi tried to shove him back further inside the tent, not wanting to become too violet and risk hurting Mikasa more as she was struck in the middle.

Mikasa held back her whimper of pain, keeping one hand gripping at the under blanket as the other blanket was left dropped on the bedding mat. Her free hand pressing to her bandage side, trying to give it some relief from her body being pulled and shoved.

"I knew there was something wrong with you" Erwin snapped back as he half dragged Mikasa through the snowy grand, stepping outside and catching all the men's attention.

"Leave Mika alone!" Armin yelled out as he went to run over but was stopped by Grisha holding him back, not wanting his son to be pulled into the trouble and risk being involved in any given punishments.

"Yeah, he's hurt" Jean snapped back, the rest of the men all taking a step forward and ready to help their friend.

"She's a women" Erwin announced as he shoved Mikasa into the snow roughly, making her hurry to grip at her blanket and keep it over her naked chest to keep some dignity she still held.

All the men leaned back, gasping in shock and staring wide eyed in disbelief towards Mikasa. All of them awkwardly staring towards her chest where she was left kneeling in the snow, covering her top half up as best as possible.

"Mum is so going to kill us" Eren whimpered out as looked horrified towards his sister and knowing his mother would finally kill them all for this. This was way different from causing trouble or getting into fights like they normally get punished for. This was full on murder waiting to happen once their mum learns about this.

"Treacherous snake!" Erwin hissed out, circling around Mikasa like a hate filled predator.

"My name is Mikasa" Mikasa admitted quietly, lifting her head and showing no shame or embarrassment for her actions. She did what she thought was right in the moment and she'd do it again if given the chance.

"Eren, help her" Armin huffed out as he finally wiggled out of Grisha hold and hurried towards his sister, grabbing Hannes saddle blanket as he passed the anxious horse.

"R-Right. God, this is like the corset  incident all over again. I thought we agreed we'd never have to deal with something like that again" Eren grumbled as he hurried over to his sister, pulling off his jacket to let her use and help cover her up.

"Now is not the time for sulking" Armin snapped back as he glared towards his best friend and brother.

Eren grumbled under his breath, coaching Mikasa to slip an arm through one of his sleeves, placing the jacket on backwards and planning to do the buttons up along her back so her front would be covered at all times now.

"High treason!" Erwin screamed out in a murderous rage.

"I did it to save my brothers. They shouldn't be forced to stand as soldiers just because they were born men. They weren't built for war. I just wanted to protect them. I never meant any harm to anyone else" Mikasa explained, desperate for the captain to hear her out and listen to her reasoning.

"You knew?" Eren yelped out, trying his best to not snap his head towards his blonde friend's direction and focusing on putting his sister's injured side arm through the next sleeve while Armin awkwardly held the horses blanket over to not expose any of her skin.

"You really didn't notice Mika was just a male copy of our sister? He fought like Mikasa always have done. Looks like her twin. Been as protective of us as she's always been. It wasn't hard to notice that Mikasa finally let her balls drop from her chest to her pants and fought beside us as a man" Armin huffed back as if his brother was the biggest idiot known and wondering how he didn't even figure it out when he's seen Mikasa fighting skills up close for all their lives.

"Armin, I love you dearly but shut up. You're only placing yourself in trouble for admitting to knowing all along. I won't have you punished for my own selfish actions" Mikasa sighed tiredly as she glanced to her youngest brother, needing him to stay quiet in hopes to stop him from getting pulled into her punishment with her.

"P-Punished?!" Eren stuttered out in fear, shakily doing the buttons up to his jacket.

"She's a women. She's not allowed to be a soldier" Grisha calmly explained to his son, watching as Armin draped Hannes blanket over his daughter to help keep her warm in the snow.

"But Mikasa's been the better man for all our lives" Eren blurted back like an idiot, gaining Armin to snicker and bury his face into Mikasa's good shoulder.

"I never meant to betray anyone's trust. I just wanted to do my part. Wanted to protect my family and home. Just like everyone else here. I knew I'd never be given a chance if I came as Mikasa instead of a Mika. I didn't meant to break anyone's trust, not over this. Please, you have to believe me" Mikasa spoke softly as she kept her gaze on the Captain's back, seeing how his shoulders were hunched up and knowing he held a troubled expression. She didn't meant to break his trust, not when she knew how hard it was to gain.

"Mikasa, protecting your brothers from bullies and stepping in during fights is completely different from what you've done. You've lied. It could be seen as treason. You could lose your life over this. You should have stayed home" Grisha lectured back as he looked to his daughter and needing her to understand that what she's done this time was something much different than compared to all her past fights or arguments in defending her family. The whole family could burn for her actions.

"Shut up, Dad. We're alive because Mikasa was there when we needed her most. She's a hero. As much as anyone else standing here with us right now" Eren snapped back, glaring towards his Dad as he was starting to sound like Erwin. Mikasa was a hero, she was as strong as anyone else around them and she's saved all their lives.

"Ultimate dishonour!" Erwin screamed out, waving a fist in the air.

"Can I hit him now I've been exposed?" Mikasa asked with a raised eyebrow, nodding her head in a hinting way towards Erwin.

"I mean.. I wouldn't act as a witness if he decides to press charges. Make it a good hit at least for the rest of us to watch and enjoy" Armin mumbled back with an innocent shrug as he wouldn't mind his sister knocking the man down a few pegs. More so when he didn't hold onto the rope and almost got her killed with the captain.

"Armin! Mikasa! No hitting the twat. We're already in enough trouble as it is" Eren scolded back, being the mature one for once between them.

Mikasa smiled to the pair before ruffling their hairs and slowly standing up. Pressing a hand to where her wound is and taking slow breaths to keep the pain at bay. Eren and Armin stood with her but took a step back, giving her space and letting her do this on her own. Both ready to catch her if her knees give in.

"I really am sorry, Captain. I planned to tell you once the time was right. I just couldn't risk being send home early. I knew you were different, that you might have heard me out if I was honest with you. I didn't mean for you to find out this way. I wanted it to be under better situation. Please. You have to believe me over this. I never meant to hurt you nor betray your trust in me" Mikasa confessed, her tone honest and her eyes full of guilt and heartbreak for her captain having to find out like this. Her body language showing she didn't mean for things to end up this way and her expression showing the promised honestly over have planning to tell him at some point.

Erwin scoffed, purposely knocking into her again as he stormed past her, leaving Armin and Eren to hurry to help sit her up again. Keeping her from going face first into the snow and letting her weakened body lean against them both. Pure murder filling their glares as they looked straight at Erwin, ready to fight him if they were able to without the risk of all of them losing their heads or making things worse for their sister.

Grisha stood to the side, his eyes pleading for mercy over his daughter's foolish actions. Begging for his sons to be overlooked and seen as much as a victim as everyone else his daughter had lied towards and tricked. He couldn't return home and pass on the news of all of his wife's children being punished for this crime. He knew it'd break her heart and kill her.

Levi finally turned round to finally look at her. He glanced to the rest of the men, seeming them conflicted but none of them seeming truly betrayed or angry. All just surprised over their friend and comrade being a women. But they all held the same respect for her as they did for Mika, he could tell by their eyes.

"Captain?" Erwin asked, expecting the worse of the punishments to be given over this.

Levi sighed before turning and finding Hannes had moved closer to him during the whole event. The horse having wanted to get closer to it's owners but keeping back at the same time. Everyone flinched when the captain pulled the sword free from it's sheath tied to the Hannes reigns.

Reiner and Jean running to grab Hannes reigns as the horse starts to act out, kicking and trying to knock into the captain to stop him. Sensing it's favourite owner was in danger and trying to help.

Armin and Eren stared terrified towards their captain, tears filling the corner of their eyes as they both clung to Mikasa and ready to shield her with their own bodies. They weren't going to allow their sister to just be killed before them.

Mikasa lowered her head before pressing a kiss to both her brothers heads and forecfully pushed them back, letting them land on their butts and backs into the snow.

"Restrain them!" Erwin ordered out as he notcied both boys getting ready to jump back towards their sister.

Grisha sprinting forward and grabbing Eren's arm, keeping him away from running to his sister's side. Marco grabbing hold of Armin, keeping him back as well. Both boys pleading for the Captain to leave their sister alone while Mikasa accepted her fate, not wanting to hurt the captain anymore by filling him with more guilt that he clearly already felt.

"No!" Reiner, Jean and Marco all choked out, clinging to those they were restraining but not wanting to see their friend lose her life.

"You know the law" Erwin scoffed back, looking pleased with the end results.

Levi stood before Mikasa, still holding her own sword and she simply smiled sweetly at him before closing her eyes. Lowing her head and preparing for her life to be taken from her. She always knew she was at greater risk to die by those she was meant to see as comrades than those who stood as her enemies.

Levi tensed, hating how accepting and calm the women seemed to be over a death sentence. Hating how she would allow him to take her life so easily. He felt disgusted that she even believed he'd take her life over such a matter involving a gender she had no control over being.

"A life for a life" Levi whispered gently, dropping the sword before Mikasa and startling her as she opened her eyes to stare at him.

Lifting her gaze to him confused before giving a slow nod as she understood what he was doing. She saved his life and in return, he had done the same.

Eren and Armin were released, both leaping at their sister and knocking her back into the snow with a pained grunt. Both men apologizing for her hurting her but neither moving to stop themselves from clinging to her.

"My debt is repaid" Levi added with a small but respectful nod towards his best and most trusted soldier.

Mikasa winced as she slowly sat up, an arm around both her brothers as they sobbed happily into her shoulders. Playing with strands of hairs along their necks and trying to comfort them as best as she could. Grisha stepping over, relieved to see her alive and all of them safe and sound once more.

"Come on, boys. She needs to rest still" Grisha sighs as he shoos his sons away from his daughter.

"Don't ever scare me like that again, okay? I-I'll tell Carla on you if you do" Armin snapped back in a scolding tone as he sits back and gives his best glare towards his sister. Hoping she'd take his angry face serious instead of seeing him as adorable.

"I'm sorry for scaring you. I'll try not to do this again anytime soon" Mikasa apologized, stroking his cheek to sooth him.

"You better not or you'll be doing all the chores for the rest of our lives" Eren huffed back as he puffed out his chest.

"I do your chores now?" Mikasa pointed out with a raised eyebrow, not seeing anything different with his threat.

"I'll make sure Armin never does his own chores so you'll have to do his scare" Eren argued back with a shrug.

"Don't be mean, Eren. She's hurt. You know the rules. No one who is ill or hurt does any of their chores until they're better. We'll need to cover Mikasa's chores until she's recovered and healed" Armin lightly scolded his brother as he gave him a small shove and reminding him over the rules.

"Let's get you back inside the tent. It'd be bad if you catch a cold or fever while your body is healing" Grisha spoke up, helping Mikasa to her feet and ready to return her to the tent to rest some more.

"I'm sorry for putting them in danger for my own selfish act. I didn't mean for this to happen" Mikasa apologized as she let her dad start leading her towards the tent.

"We'll discuss this once we've returned home. It's best to speak no more about it now and we'll have to keep your recovery at home a secret. It'd be hard to explain your injury to the village. We'll have to hold back on any marriages offers too. Luckily we can blame the war and mention wanting time as family after so many months separated" Grisha simply replied, knowing this wasn't the time or place to have such a conversation and that his sons would be needed to return to the rest of the men.

"Dad-" Eren started to complain before being cut off.

"No, Eren. She risked bringing dishonour not to herself but all of us. She could have ruined the family. I can over look the failure of her matchmaking due to knowing the men of the village would still marry her for her beauty. But this.. she would have brought dishonour to us all. None of you would have been able to marry or live the lives you've dreamed over. We'll have a stern discussion once we're home, understood?" Grisha firmly replied, unhappy over the latest events happening that involved his children and making it clear they'll talk about it more once they're home and out of ears shot.

"Yes, doctor Jaeger" Mikasa mumbled back, ducking her head in shame.

"I know you're strong willed but this is crossing a line. You've always dreamed over creating a family and if you didn't have looks, you would have lost your chances. But your looks can only keep someone hooked for so long. Dishonour would have ruined your chances of marriage completely" Grisha sighs as he shakes his head, knowing he must seem like the bad guy but he expected her to be better.

Levi listened in, only looking away once both Mikasa and Grisha had stepped inside of the tent. He lowered his gaze to his feet, feeling his hands turn into fists as he knew he was powerless over this saturation. He's done all he could in the moment but he hated how Mikasa was losing either way.

"Move out!" Levi ordered out, heading straight towards his own horse and ready to leave her behind to recover. He couldn't let her pretend to be a male soldier anymore, not with Erwin knowing. The rat would happily expose her before emperor Furlan once they reach him.

"But you can't just-" Erwin started to argue back as he chased after the captain before being cut off.

"I said, Move Out!" Levi snarled back.

A/N: So, some time back I noticed a younger generation assuming that the second film was the "Gril worth fighting for" thing for the soldiers in the first film. And, yeah, the princess's were designed by the three main soldier's dream wife. But that wasn't the girl they were fighting for.

It was hinted towards in the film and I always assumed it was correct. But I've noticed a few Mulan war's over the years and found this post. I 100% agree with the post. I always believed that the murdered little girl who's future was stolen from her was the girl they found worth fighting for in the end.

So, I'll just leave this here to break some hearts.
