They'd won.
Finally.
But she didn't feel like a victor.
Most of those she grew close didn't stand as the winners.
Relief filled their eyes over it finally being over, but not held happy tears.
They've risked their lives, saving the very people who had been wanting them dead all along.
They've lost friends, dear friends, family because of such people, and yet they still saved them.
No.
They didn't save the people, they saved a friend from growing into a monster just like them.
Even as Mikasa glanced down at her childhood's head in her arms, she had once loved him before learning that love can be much more happier than only pain all the time.
Eren will forever be her first love but she has long since grown up over such a childish crush to him, found her own path to love and learnt to love someone who truly saw her and called her "ugly" as a compliment compared to the overused words of compliments spoken by others.
She wrapped the head in a cape, hiding it from sight as she knew how disturbing it could be, a red scarf tying around the joining for cape in a nice neat bow.
She'd bury the head, by the tree, just as he had always wanted.
They've all burnt too many love ones, friends, a second family.
Never been able to truly bury one of their own before, he'd be a first for them.
For now, she had to see if her future was still possible with the one who promised to stay, to never leave even if it means fist fighting the grim reaper.
She knew he'd win, he's never lost a fight before and she'd have to beat him up in hell if he suddenly does after finally reaching peace.
Checking on Armin, Jean and Connie as she passed them. Knowing Reiner and Annie were already stumbling towards those they saved, spotting his mother and her father. Mikasa was ready to punch both parents if it was needed, not risking her friend's to gain an assault charge on their first day of freedom.
Nodding towards Armin as he looked to the cape, silently asking if their friend's head was held inside and if she'd keep her promise to finally bury their last friend who'd die for humanity's shake.
Wishing she could hold and comfort the blonde as he fell to his knees in tears, realizing over the last life being taken was yet another friend, another apart of their family.
But she couldn't waste time, not in a cruel way, she just needed to check on the last person.
"Stop saluting. I forbid you from having your life flash before your eyes or seeing hallucination of the dead. They can't have you join them just yet" She ordered out with an unimpressed as he found him slumped up against a rock and weakly saluting towards something that not all the living couldn't see just yet.
"Will you ever stop trying to parent everyone you cross paths with?" He grumbled back as his one good eye lazily focused on her, watching as she scanned over his body for his injuries.
"I've never once tried to parent Annie. We've already held respect for one another as we try to make each others lives as troublesome as possible. She still hasn't realized I'm the one who placed porridge in her boots earlier" She defended back with a sly smirk, kneeling down by his good leg, a quick glance in the direction of her rival/friend, awaiting to hear her scream in murderous rage once realizing who pranked her. It was only payback for the spider left in her scarf before they left.
"At least I won't have the paperwork from the aftermath" He sighed in relief, focusing on the positive side over no longer having to stand in the middle and deal with any aftermath over foolish actions.
"You've still got one lot of paperwork left to complete. Maybe another one or two in the future, depends how our lives go" She muttered back with a small frown, her hands feeling over his weaken body and keeping track over the worse of his injuries.
"I'm no longer captain, paperwork can sod off" He grunted back, not ever wanting to deal with paperwork again in is life.
"I do believe that it may be known as fraud by signing out marriage certificate for the both of us. And I'm not going to bother carrying our child of six months just to have sign your name afterwards like someone who doesn't want to be seen as a single mother. Like it or not, you've got some paperwork awaiting in your future" She casually mumbled back in complaints as she tilts her head to the side, knowing she'd be committing a crime. As well as refusing to deal with labour if she had to act like a women trying to hide being a signal parent by adding the man's name to the birth certificate herself.
"Can we not talk about our awaiting future why one of your childhood friend's head is shoved in that cape, please. It's disgusting" He grumbled back as he gave a clearly disgusted look towards the tied cape that current held a head of someone they both know. It was ruining the mood a little.
"I'll be back once I bury him. Armin's planning to lead a fake search in the are for Eren's body "if" the titan shifter had one left. He'd have buried the head instead but he knows I lack people skills" She mumbled back as she took hold of his hand, carefully holding it as she passed on the plan. Mentioning why she'd be taking her friend's head back home instead of the blonde.
"I'll just be here, resting up for our wedding" He promised back, having to really think hard to be able to give her hand a slight squeeze.
"Levi.." She whispers, concern in her eyes.
"Don't speak my name so carelessly, someone might hear" He scolded back out of habit, ignoring how the edges of his vision was growing dark.
"You're not a captain anymore. We're not soldiers anymore. We're just us" She reminded him with a small but soft smile, her eyes shinning as she remembers they're not longer soldiers but free to be whoever they dreamed to be.
"Speak my name as much as you want. Heck, I might break into song whenever I have to say your name now" He smirked back, wanting to hear her say his name for the rest of his life. Wanting to sing her name now that he could publicly show her affection without risk of being forced to break up with her due to rules.
"That's be embarrassing" She confessed, cheeks already rosy from embarrassment by the mere thought alone.
"You deserve being sung over" He admitted with a gentle look, knowing she deserved the whole god damn world if he could give it to her.
"Levi.." She speaks his name again, the concern back in her eyes.
"Hmm? Speak you're mind brat" He snapped out, wanting to be rid of that concern in her eyes for good.
"I've chosen you, not him. I WANT you. I NEED you. I LOVE YOU. Not him, not anymore. I'll return once I've dealt with his final wishes. We can finally decide on a date for our wedding. I'll ask Armin to walk me down the isle to you and my dress will be as white as you're mental image over the perfect cleanness" She confesses with such a warm look that he wondered if he was already in heaven and facing his guardian angel. Her eyes bright and beautiful as she hinted over how part of their wedding would look.
"I'll be here, Mikasa. I won't leave you, I promised you that much already. I'm going to stay, even if you chose to no longer love me or need me, I'll still stay" He reassured her with his own soft look, reminding her over his promise and knowing he'd fight the devil and god themselves to stay by her side. To see her look at him as if he was her everything every morning for the rest of their lives.
"Better be thinking over who should stand as your best man while I'm gone. I've waited long enough to be your wife as it is" She smiled back, pressing a quick kiss to his lips before pushing herself to stand.
Levi didn't answer, knew she would be expected his announcement over a best man once she's returned. He'll tell her and he'll turn her from his secret bride to his wife for all to see. He'll stay for however long she'll have him and fate allows.
It's why he was able to smile as he watched her back disappear among the dirt mist that was still covering most of the land around them. She vanished from his sight, one last mission left in her life before she could fully place her own life first.
He wasn't threatened over her leaving to bury her childhood friend's head, knew she had once loved him, but now her heart belonged to him. Knew that she was only placing her friend down to rest peacefully as he deserved.
Knew if he showed signs off insecurity over the act, she'd ask her still breathing childhood friend to take and bury the head instead. She would stay with him, carry him to get medical treatment and await the blonde's return to hear if he's completed the task or not.
Levi didn't want the brat's head to be buried, didn't feel as if the brat was worth so much sacrifice given in the past few years. But he knew he would have buried Furlan or Isabel in a heartbeat if he could, even if they had taken Eren's path.
Feeling his eyes start to grow tired, his eyelids heavy and he struggled to stay conscious much longer. Feeling his body relax as he slumped against the rock he's taken to sitting against. Knowing that he'd stay waiting as long as it takes her but knowing he at least deserved a decent nap as he waited for her return.
"Capt-"
"Cap-"
"W...nee...med..ow!"
(We need a medic now)
"St...wit.. us .. ir"
(stay with us sir)
Voices muffled around him as he allowed himself to dream over their future once again. Knowing that their love, their relationship was no longer needed to be held back or hidden. They weren't soldiers and they didn't need to place humanity first.
They were finally able to put their own desires first, to finally be able to live their own life for their own shakes and not for the shake of others.
He wasn't going to die, he had a promise to keep, he had to stay.
It was HIS promise to keep..
But resting his eyes was calling for him like a mother's lullaby, he's wake up, he always has before.
Until he didn't.
She wouldn't forgive him for breaking his only promise to her so soon.
