He wasn't sure if he wanted to grow worried or laugh like a mad man when he realized he grew jealous over her being the one to rest in his lap. Wanting nothing more than to swap their roles and lay his head in her own lap as their arms held each other close.
But they had a system, took turns on the few rare occasions where both humanities strongest were hurt enough to need to rest. It was her turn this time around, most likely her last. And his eyes grew wet knowing that he had already taken his own last turn the last time they got hurt.
He would have cherished his last turn a tiny bit more if he knew it was going to be his last. Just as he knew she was cherishing her own final turn, her hand gripping his hand that little bit more gently than normal.
No one dared to question humanity's strongest strange habit. To take turns resting their heads in the others laps. It was something that just grew to happen and in due time, those closest to them would just fondly smile or give a playful tease in passing after the event.
No one smiled this time and none were able to even rip out a joke from their throats as they sobbed and cried. Most had already passed, hopefully moved up to heaven and were living in the afterlife happily. The rest would follow shortly afterwards and the few who did survive would no longer fight again, would wait to meet them all once again as deaths claims them due to old age, hopefully.
But he didn't care for the others, he only cared for the moment the two shared.
Neither knew when they had stopped trying to add pressure to their wounds, not when no medics were coming and no treatment could be given to save them.
They've lost, left cornered to die out on the boat they've stolen to reach back home. Not all of them would be seeing their home again or even seeing the current sunrise that some would have admired.
He wanted to keep her alive just as she had tried to keep him alive but both had accepted that their guardian angel had ran out of miracles for them today.
They just gave up, decided to die in each others hold as they travelled home together.
He had hoped to have gained a home for the two of them, to add matching rings to their wedding fingers once the war was over.
God knows they deserved some peace and a chance at happiness.
He wasn't sure who'd bleed out.
Didn't even know who he hoped to die first between them.
They were both going together, a silent agreement between them.
Would she lift her gaze to find his eyes without life in them anymore, having felt him take his final breath.
Would he press a kiss to their links hands, feeling her arm grow limp as her soul leaves her body.
He wanted to die first, selfishly but he also didn't want her to be alone as she took her final breath.
He couldn't rely on those still breathing to stay by her side in her final few minutes of life, not when they were all grieving still and fearing being left behind.
They never even confessed.
Never allowed such sweet words of romance to escape their lips.
Only silent promises over finally accepting the emotions in their hearts once war was over.
Knew they wouldn't survive if they made such promises true during the war just to lose the other as fate played it's cruel games with them again.
At least they got to go together.
A happy bright side in their own eyes, even if some might find it a little bit sad.
He wasn't sure who died first, or if they both stubbornly took their last breath together.
All he knew was that god had shown mercy as they both awoken in heaven together.
Passed Friends and Families were all standing in the distance, already grown use to their enteral peace within the clouds.
Some were happy to see them while others were sad, having hoped they'd live to see the end of the war, to have a better ending.
But he all cared about was finally keeping a handful of their silent promises, even if it meant doing them in the afterlife instead.
And as always, they stepped into heaven together to live their own version of happier ever after.
