Rumours were aways spread around within the wall.
The survey crops camp was no different.
Lies were told, shared and true secrets passed on.
Rumours would always hold more life than any living being that held breath in their lungs.
Neither had actual cared over the rumours.
Not at first.
They were use to hearing gossip over themselves as the years pass.
All they cared for was making sure any true or false rumour ruined their lives wrongly.
It was mostly an accident that formed the latest rumours.
Neither had planned any of this.
It just happened.
"We need to name her" Mikasa announced as she stared to the young baby left laying on the floor, laying on blankets and pillows placed around her to keep her comfortable and stop anyone from accidently stepping on her. Giving her the freedom to lay and stare at the ceiling in her own form of playtime.
"If we name it than we'd get attached" Levi reminded the other women, standing by the window and pretending to look out towards the camp but actual using the reflection to keep an eye on the under three month old.
"You've built a crib in your office. You're already attached" Mikasa deadpanned over the obvious. They've only snuck the baby into camp three days ago.
"I'm not naming it. We need to find a respectful and worthy couple to raise her" Levi sighed as he turned away from the window, looking at his fellow soldier as he passed on the next step to this.
"We can't just place out some parent advert for others to see. If we're giving her up than she'd be placed in an orphanage. We can't privately give her away, not now others have seen her" Mikasa scoffed back as she crossed her arms over her stomach, knowing the little girl would just be stuck into an orphanage. Married couples still needed to gain the councils permission to have a child. Adoption was different, it was encouraged in hopes to stop others from gaining baby fever and becoming parents behind the councils backs. But each child given up or left orphaned were still focused to go to an orphanage before being adopted by willing or chosen parents.
"I know a handful of soldiers wanting a child but have been rejected from the council. If we just talk to some of them than they might be willing to take it and we'll be able to keep an eye over it well being still" Levi argued back as he was sure he could use his rank to help the adoption progress go more smoothly and make sure the girl ends up with good parents.
"I'm naming her" Mikasa announced as she glanced to the smiling baby that was happy to try and wiggle where she laid.
"We're not naming it" Levi argued back.
"Stop calling her as an IT. It's unkind" Mikasa grumbled back in irritation.
"I'm not risking getting attached" Levi snapped back in frustration.
Mikasa merely and silently raised an unimpressed eyebrow towards him over the bullshit he had clearly spoken. Glancing around his office, she was proved over that fact. He had an expensive looking crib built and well bedded in the corner, ten steps from his office and twenty steps from his attached bedroom.
Blankets left neatly folded over an armchair that's meant to be used by guests or soldiers when called into his office. A few baby burping cloths thrown around the office, all for easy grabbing at different points of the office. And she knew his bedroom was filled with more of the baby things.
She wasn't even going to point out that a waterskin filled with baby milk was placed on the same tray holding his teacup and teapot on his desk. Clearly having a drink break while feeding the baby and clearly having done it often enough to get the hand of it.
"I'm not attached" Levi weakly shot back, purposely not looking her in the eyes.
"I'll name her. You won't be attached if I'm the one naming her" Mikasa offered up to make this easier and willing to take the blame if any attachments happen.
"It dose deserve to be treated as a human being at least" Levi mumbled back as he walked towards the baby, ready to pick her up.
"Her!" Mikasa snapped back in a scolding tone over him still calling the baby as an "it".
"It likes being called it" Levi shot back in his own defence, picking up the smiling baby as if that was prof enough.
"She is barely three month's old and will start to assume that's her name" Mikasa sighed as she shook her head, throwing her arms in the air.
"I'll call it by name once it gains one" Levi replied as he passed the child over, knowing the other would be taking care of her while he was expected to attended a higher ranks meeting.
Neither had planned to bring the baby girl back to camp.
It was an accident that just couldn't be stopped from being made.
Levi had gone to the village with his newly gained squad, having gained complaints from the village over a few soldiers making a mess or behaving badly.
Leaving Levi to take away his own squads day off when half the camp gained their promised twenty-four hour leave. Allowing them to go to the closest village and deal with any misbehaving soldiers they come across. As well as gain names or see if the soldiers were as bad as the complaints have mentioned.
Turns out that the complaints were aimed at the wrong Regiment. It was military soldiers that were causing all the problems. It didn't take long for Levi and his squad to deal with them and send them packing.
Levi giving his squad the rest of the day off as well as a new promised leave date. Most of them staying in the village to enjoy themselves, even in uniform. Mikasa having decided to return back to camp with the Captain since she didn't actual have anything she wanted to do or buy.
That when "IT" as the captain calls her, came into the story.
During their ride back they almost stopped over her. She was left in the road, not the centre but not near the edge either. If a cart had came along, they'd assume it was some old dropped blankets and the wheels would have rolled over and crushed the poor baby.
Both had grimaced over how easily the child would have been killed if left where she was and scooped her up without a second thought. Riding back into the village to find any news over anyone missing a child or any recently expecting women.
All the women who had meant to be giving birth recently had all their babies accounted for. No one else was rumoured or known over to have have a child close to the babies age. Not even in secret.
It left them grabbing a few baby supplies they could carry and ride back with. Taking the baby to the camp's doctor and getting her checked over.
And since, she's been left in their care why they've figured out what to do with her.
"How do you feel over names related to anyone we've lost?" Mikasa asked from where she was slowly pacing around the open space by his office door, baby carefully in her hold.
"No. I want her to have her own name. One she can grow into. She shouldn't be linked to someone else. She's not a replacement for them" Levi honestly anwsered, a troubled frown on his lips as the thought of the child trying to live up to a name.
Mikasa soft smile was hidden by her back being to the captain, taking notice over the captain calling the child as "her" instead of "it" like he normally did. She knew the captain clearly didn't notice his slip up and wasn't going to mention anything over it.
"Do we want a long name or a short one? A name we could link to a nickname?" Mikasa asked next, turning round with a giggly baby in her arms as she kept poking playfully at her cheeks, nose and chin.
"Nothing long. We don't know if she'd struggle to speak or spell. Not all children grasps those skills easily" Levi mumbled back, not wanting he child to be stuck with a name she might not be able to say or find easy to spell.
"River" Mikasa announced, a sweet smile pulling on her lips as she stared down to the smiling baby in her hold.
"River" Levi repeated, finally moving gaze from his paperwork to the pair.
"Hmm" Mikasa hummed back, swaying with River.
"I like her name" Levi admitted with a small but true smile.
"River Ackerman" Mikasa tasted the name out loud to her own ears, River gurgling back and showing she liked the name too.
"She's not-" Levi started to argue over the child not being related to them before being cut off.
"I'm keeping her. We've done rather well to care for her so far. I'm sure we can leave her in the care of injured or sentry soldiers left in camp whenever we're out on a expedition" Mikasa admitted shyly, knowing she won't be able to just leave River anymore.
"You want to keep her?" Levi slowly asked, making sure she the other understood what she was agreeing to do.
"She's already been abounded once. I don't want her to go through it again" Mikasa replied as she met with his gaze, having already made her mind up.
And Levi knew he could argue over the fact that she wasn't even speaking or rolling yet meaning she'd never remember any of this. It wouldn't matter if they gave her up since she'd never know over it. But deep down, further than he's allowed anyone to know over his feelings before, he wanted to keep her too.
"We'll need a second crib to place in your room" Levi sighed as he ran a hand through his hair, already thinking over when he can ride over to the village and buy another one by lights out tonight.
"Or you could just take me out on a date and we can think about marriage afterwards" Mikasa casually shot back as she twirled around on the spot with a giggling River.
"Wha-" Levi choked out, eyes wide.
"It's not like I could marry anyone worse and I'm already stuck dealing with you everyday of my life. Might as well get a ring out of dealing with your grumpiness" Mikasa scoffed back as she rolled her eyes, knowing it wouldn't be much of a sacrifice in marrying the man. She wouldn't mind it a all, not at all.
"Gold or silver?" Levi asked back, not finding that he hated the idea of marriage.
"Huh?" Mikasa breathed out, confused over the random question.
"The ring" Levi explained with a smirk, already knowing he'd still be popping out to the village for something that wasn't the crib now but much smaller and round.
"Surprise me" Mikasa grinned back.
