The war had ended just forty years ago and a new peace was being lived out with it's new generation who never knew the horrors of titans or fighting against humanity.
Instead, they were able to live freely without fear of being killed of those they thought of as friends.
And, it also meant they never learnt of those who gave up their lives to give them this better future.
Those who promised to go down in history was forgotten as a new generation ruled over and it was the saddest thing any hero's could see.
They saved everyone for this day to come, to let people live with smiles and be able to just enjoy life to it's fullest without bloodshed ever ruining it.
To keep memories from being stained as life only turned worse for them all.
But now, as Levi sat outside of his tiny little tea shop. Holding his cup as he's always done and sitting on the old bench he first made when he got the store, he was wondering if surviving the war was worth.
Sure, he was blessed with the sight of the future, a future so many had died for but it was a future held up by so many bodies that became forgotten and uncared for.
In fact, even he was forgotten.
He wasn't a famous captain anymore, he was simple an old man with his tea ship.
It scared him, that all that pain and sacrifice was so easily forgotten and never thought over apart from himself.
He was one of the few that still held breath, he's heard over a few getting married and some who just found their own form of peace far away.
He knew some had took their last breath, by old age, sickness or just by an accident and he prays for them to finally rest in heaven.
Sure, their hands were stained but God could pull out the stick shoved up his ass and overlook all the bullshit they've done to bring this better future.
Just a handful, Levi would give his soul to the devil just to let all his comrades rest eternity into heaven after all they've done for those who didn't even know what a titan was anymore.
Maybe he is getting old and grouchy, his wife always told him that he was grumpy before age came along but it was certainly making him bitter. He thought he was meant to find the future as safe and comforting but this future growing before his eyes only scared him more.
He should listen to his wife more often and not people watch as much anymore, even if it was something that he's always done. Mostly he started keeping an eye on anyone and everyone due to his rough life in the underground and as a soldier made enemies take any chance they've got but now, his only enemy was time it self. Something he knew he wouldn't win against.
"Amber should be visiting soon"
His wife voice filled his ears, even with age it still sound as sweet as a birds singing in the fresh mornings.
"She shouldn't waste her time on us anymore, she's a grown up brat now" He replied, his own voice worn but still held it's roughness that she's always heard the kindness in somehow.
"Adult is the word your thinking off" His wife corrected him with an amused shine in her aging eyes as she took her place beside him on the bench with her own cup of tea.
"No, she's a hot headed smartass. Adults are childish" He shot back with a slight smirk, only feeling prouder as his wife laughed bedside him. He might be an grumpy old man but he still could make his wife smile and laugh, an achievement he was proud over.
"I think she's going to get married soon" She mumbled out, resting her head on his shoulder as if they were still the same as during the long raging war. Time might have past but she was still the emotional bratty cadet that would rub against his bad side yet, still stole his heart before he ever had a chance to defend it.
"She's always been solo" He stated back, never thinking his niece would ever settle down. Of course, as they've brought her up from an young age, he did want her to become as lucky as he was by finding her own special someone but he wouldn't force it either. She picked up a few Ackerman habits when in their care and he wasn't going to punish her for it by expecting grandchildren.
"But she's dreamed over marrying since she was a little girl. She wanted to find someone special like her parents did and as we did" She reminded him, sliding her free hand over his arm before reaching his hand.
"Do you think she's forgiven your brother yet?" He asked quietly, lacing their finger's together and enjoying the small fact over how perfectly their hands still fitted together even when they've gotten so wrinkly.
"No, I think Eren will forever be hated by her. She still blames him for being the reason her Father died so young. She knew her mother made the choice as a child and nothing could change that. But for Armin, she seems to think that if Eren wasn't such a suicidal bastard than Armin wouldn't have to have been in such danger's all the time" She mumbled back her own thoughts over the whole thing. Her niece was such a mixture of both her parents, parents she had learnt to read long ago and it helped to understand their niece so much more.
"It was my choice to give Arlert that injection, she should hate me not Jaeger" He sighed, feeling bad over the other uncle having to watch over them and knowing his niece grew to hate him.
"She knows it was your choice but she won't blame you over it. I think she's just upset over the whole thirteen years of life bull-crap that's given to titan shifter. Annie didn't have long to live once the war was over and Armin rushed to marry her so he could enjoy the few years they could have together. Amber wasn't planned, they were scared of having a child and knowing their child would have to watch them slowly die first. But, they cherished Amber and I think we've done well in bringing her up with love. Armin and Annie will be proud over their daughter and I'm sure they're happy over how we brought her up once they had passed on" She replied calmly, giving their joint hands a light squeeze and smiling as he squeezed back.
"We should plan to go to the ocean again soon, invite Amber to meet us there. She always loved the ocean as a little girl and we could invite those friends of yours too" He spoke up, bringing his tea cup to his lips for a sip as he thought of a nice day out for them.
"Connie hasn't been heard off since he went traveling the world after we won the war. These walls and marley holding to many memories for him, some good but most too painful for him to cope. No one even knows if he's still alive or not" She reminded him over the few friends they did have left after the war.
"And the sucker who thought he had a chance with you?" He asked as he glanced over to his wife who settled her tea cup down on the end of the bench.
"Jean died, remember. His daughters were by his side during his last moments and wrote down his last words to us in the letter he never got to finish writing. They sent it to us for him and finished the letter for him. He caught that flu a couple years ago" She answered with a small smile, giving their joint hands a reassuring squeeze. She was use to these moments, his mind not being as it once was but neither was she after all.
"I'm sorry" He apologized barely above a whisper as he lowered his head earning her to raise her own.
"For what?" She asked, concern clear over her face.
"For not being able to give you the children you once dreamed over. I never thought much over children since they were so dirty and messy but with you, I would have wanted one" He replied, his voice low and quiet while guilt filled his eyes for not giving her a whole family.
"Levi, it was never your fault. I'm the one to blame for not being able to give us a child to complete our family" She sorrowfully spoke, lowing her head as she slipped her hand from his and placed over her flat stomach. A broken look in her eyes as she couldn't give him an child, feeling as if she failed not only the one she loves but her own parents as well as once spoke over her passing on the family traits to her own children.
"Mikasa, I fell in love with you as you were. We might not have knew over the damaged left from your injuries but I still married you because I love you as you are. My family is already complete, children or not, It's complete. In my eyes, as long as I have you than I'm happy" He softly smiled, turning his body and having a few bones crack while he did before gently placing his hands on her cheeks. Leaning their forehead together just like they've also done when one of them were scared or sad, keeping them focused on each other and no one else.
"Just think over all those who tried taking down the last of us Ackermans and we've done it for them by a simple war wound getting infected" She weakly smiled, trying to lighten up the mood once more as she knew he's never blamed her or regretted over loving her.
"Oh how our enemies are rolling in their graves" He grinned back, chuckling at the thought and grinning more as she giggled.
"I think that's why Armin chose to leave Amber in our care. To give us a chance to raise a child when we couldn't have our own. Jean would have been happy to take Amber in, even if he had yet to meet his own wife at the time and I'm sure, Connie would have taken her in and settled down somewhere to bring her up. He did return that year when Armin time would run out and did visit the grave he laid in with Annie, giving his last farewell to them both. But, I think Armin gave us her because he wanted us to complete one of our dreams" She admitted with a fond smile as they moved back to watching the people passing by. Resting her head on his shoulder once more as he took hold of her hand and gently held it on his own lap.
"We never acted as her true parents. We made sure to always tell her over that smartass and the ice queen. She knew her parents better than she got to know us" He added on as they've always made one thing clear when raising Amber. They were and never be a replacement for her own parents, they were just the greatest auntie and uncle a child ever have and they kept it that way. They wouldn't leave Armin or Annie to become forgotten or replaced by them, not their friends.
"But we didn't do so bad at bringing her up either. We got to have a daughter and I didn't have to go through the torture of pregnancy or labour. I think we got the good end of the deal" She smirked back a little smugly as she didn't enjoy having to help Annie though the last few months of the pregnancy any didn't enjoy the birthing of Amber either. It wasn't as precious or charming as doctor jaeger spoke off.
"And now we can enjoy our last years as proud parents who won't have to pay for any wedding bills either" He happily admitted without any shame as he's seen the cost of weddings nowadays and how much fancier they've became since the years when they got married.
"That's the best part of being an auntie and uncle, we don't have to handle anything apart from telling her how pretty she is on the day" She added on with a smile and only smiling more as she heard the one she loved chuckle. She still got the talents over making him smile and laugh, a proud skill she'd boast over to her family once she sees them again.
"We really aren't going to be remembered, are we?" Levi finally asked the heavy and nagging question that's been floating in the back of his mind.
"No hero ever is after time passes" Mikasa answered with a sadden smile.
