In the end, Levi did take over the rest of the driving.
Mikasa having to pull over and just in time as Armin was throwing up just seconds after stepping out of the car. Thankfully throwing up over some railings as Mikasa comfortingly ran her fingers through his blonde locks of hair.
Soon removing his poncho and backpack, placing them by his feet once again before getting out a star wars themed water bottle and passing it over for him to drink out to help pass the sickly feeling.
Mikasa pulled out an captain America themed water bottle from her own bag, taking a sip before awkwardly holding it out for Levi. He clearly judged her over the bottle before taking it as she was ready to reject her earlier offer over letting him some. Levi taking a sip of water from her water before moving to the driver seat, having to move the seat for his use and sent a glare towards Armin who snickered.
"Small means cute, we'll be cuties forever and ever and everyone loves the cute ones" Armin spoke up with a silly grin, trying to give some comforting advice towards Levi who just rolled his eyes and ignoring the amused look on Mikasa face as she sat down in the passenger seat.
The three were soon on the road again, Mikasa getting the CD player to work and Avril Lavign was soon playing through the speakers, Armin singing along to sk8er boy surprising Levi a little before he noticed Mikasa sheepish look as she secretly song along in a small whisper.
Levi would secretly admit, it was rather cute.
He knew he should ask if she wanted to return to his camp, she did have a kid and the boy would be safe in the camp. But, he didn't want to push her into that choice either, they were doing well alone do far after all.
So, awkwardly clearing his voice making both stop singing as a different song played and just look to him. He asked the main question, feeling the tension in the air as he waited for them to answer before Armin spoke up.
For some reason, he was reaching over to the seat behind the passenger seat where Levi had left his bag and was currently grabbing something under it.
"My book!" Armin squealed out, his eyes sparkling as she held the book out for Mikasa to see.
"You went back for the book" Mikasa muttered out in shock, just staring at the stranger beside her with wide unbelieving eyes.
"You're the one who told me that he liked books and would go air headed when reading. Plus, he's a smart kid, can't risk him becoming stupid like the rest of the world" Levi mumbled back unbothered, acting like it was no big deal but Mikasa saw past his act.
"Thank you" Mikasa whispered, giving a small but true smile almost making Levi slam on the breaks in shock.
"Can we keep him, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee" Armin begged, giving his best puppy eyes as he looked to Mikasa who gave a small laugh.
"I don't that's up to us, I think the main question is if he minds keeping us for a little longer" Mikasa replied with a slight smirk, glancing to her younger brother who turned to Levi with hopeful eyes.
"I did risk my ass for that book, I better get the chance to see you enjoy it" Levi simply answered, smiling as he heard Armin cheer in the back and knowing the boy was hugging the book.
"Also, cursing is naughty and the punishment is a huge hug or kiss on both cheeks at bed time. I'll accept any form or your repenting" Armin commented like a disapproving mother scolding her son.
Levi just raised an eyebrow, glancing to Mikasa who gave a nod showing the boy wasn't joking around over the cursing thing or the punishments.
"How about I don't tell anyone about your sister awful driving skills or that you threw up. You'll need to keep some street credit since you'll be the new kid" Levi shot back, his tone flat but Mikasa noticed the playfulness in his eyes.
"I don't need street cred, I just need Mikasa. She's looked after me this long and she's always been nice and cheers me up when the kids were mean. She even buys me a huge book for my birthday, encouraging me to keep on reading even when my teachers told me try reading books more my age" Armin mumbled back, a distant look in his eyes as he placed his new book on his lap and Mikasa looked to him with worry.
"What about gaining me as a comrade, I don't do friendship but comradeship I might be able to do. I also know a quiet spot in camp for where you can read in peace" Levi offered, changing his deal once again and Armin lifted his head with a bright smile on his face.
"Really!" Armin asked in the pure innocence only a child could have.
"Really" Levi answered without a second thought.
It took around forty minutes until Levi was parking the car into an old almost overgrown carpark within a set of woods. Clearly the type of woods that others would walk through as a hobby if it was popular enough to have it's own carpark.
Mikasa stepped out of the car, walking over to the door that Armin sat beside before opening it. Nodding for the blonde boy to hop out before she grabbed his and her own backpack, placing them by the wheel. She reached further in, grabbing Levi bag before holding it out to him as he was just waiting for her to close the last door and for him to be able to lock the car itself. He gave a nod of thanks, pulling his bag on while she grabbed the poncho, folding it up with the leash still poked through the hole before shoving it into the small net bottle holder of Armin bag.
The content silence was mostly filled by Armin telling them some strange facts he's read from one of his books during the apocalypse, Mikasa nodding along to most of it and giving a couple questions or compliments over her younger brother knowing certain facts. Levi just stayed silent, walking on the other side of Armin and giving a slight nod whenever the boy excitedly turned towards him wondering if he liked the fact or found it as cool as he did.
Levi did notice that Armin was happily holding Mikasa hand and Levi wondered what the normal age was for children to walk on their own without holding an adult hand. Sure, teens still hold their parents hand when walking together but they didn't do it every time, just now or then and out of free will.
But then again, maybe the hand holding wasn't to stop the boy from getting lost but to keep him safe. To keep him close if any forms come along, it was an apocalypse after all.
They finally reached an open area in the woods that were more like a medium filed, old rotten picnic benches pushed to the tree line out of the way and tents filled open one end of the filed as a huge fire pit was placed in the centre with plastic chairs or metal benches placed around for all to sit on. A bigger tent sat the opposite end to the other tents, looking more like a discussion or meeting tent then anything else.
"Welcome to the camp, It's not much but it's safe. There's a river further in the woods where we get fresh water from and we have a small patch behind the tents where we're growing some food. We still go out and scavenge tin food and any other supplies but we've got the basics we need here in camp. Everyone do their parts, you'll be asked to do the same but I'm guessing we can pull you to the scavenging team" Levi mumbled out as he stood in the treeline with them, letting them take in the view of the camp.
It wasn't breath taking but it was still rather incredible, the human race was surviving here without turning into monsters. It was a bit of home away from the madness of the world.
"And you just accept anyone into your camp? What if I was working for another camp or something? I would have your location, your numbers and you're stability" Mikasa commented with a raised eyebrow, finding all this to be rather careless compared to how the world ran now.
"It's true, I could be really scary and mean" Armin agreed with his sister, trying to make his toughest face that earned Mikasa to just run her fingers through his hair holding back her laugh.
"He's not joking, he could take you down" Mikasa joked as she turned to Levi who couldn't hold back his smirk.
"I'm sure he can but I can fight rather dirty" Levi smirked back, crossing his arms over his chest as he met with Mikasa gaze.
"Yeah but you don't have a mikasa, I do meaning I can't lose" Armin smugly answered as he crossed his own arms, trying to copy Levi while Mikasa slipped her hands into the pockets of her jeans, amusement written all over her face.
"Ah, your right .. I don't have a Mikasa. But I can actually drive, think you can face me in a car?" Levi shot back as he raised a playful eyebrow towards the younger boy who froze up.
"That's cheating" Armin huffed out, puffing his cheeks as he pouted a little making the two adults laugh, neither being able to hold it back anymore.
"Come on, I'll take you to our camp leader and he'll help you both to settle in. And for the record, we don't just let anyone wonder into our camp. We normally test them out before offering them to join the camp" Levi replied, patting Armin shoulder before he started walking again, leading the two further into the camp.
"What made you trust us enough? And don't say it's because of Armin, children can be just as sneaky and untrusting when they're love ones are being threatened" Mikasa asked, letting her curious take over for a moment.
"You" Levi simply answered as he looked over his shoulder.
"Me?" Mikasa whispered out in shock.
"Maybe he thinks your as strong as you are pretty" Armin offered his thoughts, giving an innocent smile to his sister who just rolled her eyes. She knew Armin was meaning well but right now, compliments weren't a way to gain a person trust.
"The look in your eyes, that's all I needed. And the boy, his type doesn't survive in this world meaning you had to be willing to go through hell to protect him on your own. That's how I knew I could trust you, when the gunshots fired, you ran straight to him. You've also carried on letting him read and gain more knowledge even while zombies roams around, you've been protecting him in more ways then one and let him stay as innocent as one can. His smile is real not forced, I know I can trust you" Levi explained, his voice low but soft and his eyes weren't as stern as they normally were, he was being honest to her.
"Thank you, for not leaving us behind when you could have ran" Mikasa replied, her eyes showing her true feelings of gratitude and trust towards him.
"And thank you for the book. I'll tell you all about the fun facts I might learn from it" Armin smiled brightly, a skip in his step as Levi just nodded.
They soon reached the meeting tent, Levi stepping in first and giving a greeting nod to the three inside before looking over his shoulder at Mikasa who stayed in the doorway, Armin nervously clinging to her leg.
"When I sent you to check out the group hiding in the city, there wasn't a hidden message for you to make a family at the same time" Erwin sighed as he glance from the map currently laid on a small round table in front of him to Mikasa and Armin.
"Damn, if that's your intentions then you better start paying child support" Mikasa joked as she placed her free hand on her hip, glancing to Levi who raised an amused eyebrow.
"Don't make me go out to buy some milk" Levi warned, crossing his arms loosely over his chest as Mikasa just smirked.
"But the milk would all be out of date by now, you're better off leaving to find a cow and not the old one that use to live down the road" Armin mumbled back, his hands loosely gripping Mikasa jeans while her other arm loosely hanged around him to comfort him.
"She wasn't a cow" Mikasa muttered back, rolling her eyes over Armin innocence sometimes.
"But you called her a bitch" Armin argued back making Mikasa have to nod over that one.
"She was one" Mikasa simply answered with a shrug.
"Oh, I can see why Levi picked her" Hanji grinned, wiggling her eyebrows as she rubbed her hands together. Mike nodding his head in agreement beside her as he sent a knowing look towards Levi who rolled his eyes.
"Look, she's staying with the boy and needs a tent. Four-eyes ... actually, Mike, get her settled in and I'll pass on the information I've gathered over the group" Levi sighed as he stepped closer to the table.
"That may be a problem, the other group left this morning remember. They'll be bringing back extra tents since we gave the last one out to the last group we welcomed. The only space left for the two of them is your tent" Mike reminded as he glanced to Armin and Mikasa before turning back to Levi.
"Oh" Levi breathed out.
"See, all those times of having so many fear you enough to not share that tent with you is now biting you in the ass" Erwin commented as he looked back to the camp, ignoring the shorter man glare.
"I just don't like annoying people and everyone in the camp are idiots one way or another. My tent is my only escape" Levi shot back, placing his hands on his hips. Sure, having a three person tent to himself might have been a bit much but when he had to deal with most of the camp people, he found the empty lonely tent as a blessing.
"So, it could be like camping in the garden but without Eren trying to scare me by tapping on the tent walls and pretending it was a monster outside" Armin spoke up, stepping out from behind Mikasa and looking to her.
Mikasa glanced down to Armin who started showing an excited expression over the chance to camp in a tent again. The boy's only done it three times in his life and they were all in Eren old tent in the back garden and all three times they woke up back inside the house.
Mikasa kneeled down, taking Armin small hands in her own and she was getting ready to come up with some silly excuse over why they couldn't have a sleepover with Levi in his tent. She noticed Levi seemed to be someone who enjoyed his privacy and while, Armin was normally a good shy boy, she didn't want to push on his kindness by taking half of his tent from him.
"I'm normally the one sent on the most dangerous scavenge hunts and I lead most of them as well. I'll leave early in the morning or return rather late at night and I won't even try being quiet over it. It's my tent and I like to keep it clean but if you can handle my habits, the tent is big enough for the three of us .. if you want to buddy up" Levi spoke up, glancing to the side as he couldn't just leave the two to sleep outside somewhere when all the tents were already filled up with the buddy system. He also wasn't going to let t hem sleep in a car so far from the camp, he might have been a jerk but he wasn't a complete dick.
"I like to read before bedtime and I still sleep with my teddy, that's my strange sleeping habit. Mikasa strange habit is that she tries kicking anyone who shakes her awake when she's in a deep sleep .. so never stand in kicking reach when waking her .. sometimes she stops in time, other times someone's gained a black eye. Now our strange sleeping habits that might annoy someone is out in the open ... we can sleep all happy together" Armin grinned, his hands on his hips as he was rather proud over giving out the secrets to form a sleeping buddy friendship.
"You kick people who wake you up?" Levi asked amused as he looked towards Mikasa.
"Only if I'm jolted away, it's not in my control. Been doing it since I was a baby and never grew out of it for some reason" Mikasa sighed, running a hand through her hair.
"She made camping downstairs after a movie night really fun when Eren woke up from a nightmare and trying clinging to her ... she sent him flying sometimes" Armin happily added on such a fact, a joyful look in his eyes over the memory.
"That was one time and it was his own fault for trying to scare you with horror films before bedtime. He get's as scared as you do" Mikasa grumbled back as she crossed her arms.
"You sent a kid flying... You're gonna be sleeping on the opposite end of the tent to me. Just so I don't get kicked out of my own tent when returning or leaving for a scavenge hunt" Levi ordered with a tiny smirk, holding back his amusement as much as he could over the whole thing.
"Wow, someone might actually survive being Levi tent buddy. No one else is brave enough to actually share a tent with him, it's kinda exciting to watch" Hanji grinned, bouncing on the spot a little.
"She's the one for the dog leash?" Mikasa asked with a raised eyebrow.
"If you ever find a gag, make sure to grab one for me .. she rants in her sleep and her tent is three down from us" Levi sighed in irritation.
